  • you can check all of the prices at menupages.com.

Fried chicken at sidecar = $17
Fried chicken at BR = $25.50

    Burger at sidecar = $10
    Burger at BR = $14.50

I like BR, but there is no price comparison. Prices on most things are close to 50% higher there.
  • yeah, i think something's fishy about this post.

funny thing is, the original poster is only making me want to go to sidecar even more.
  • ^I want to go there more because I am guaranteed not to run into him there.
  • "^I want to go there more because I am guaranteed not to run into him there."

    Interesting comment.

    Have a nice day Flexi.
  • I agree that it sounds like we have a BR on a good day and Sidecar on a bad. That happens. I don't think it means pokersloper is fishy or anything.

Pokersloper, give sidecar another chance. if it happens again, then screw them. But I will echo what the majority of people are saying in that there great.

"There is something missing from all this. What you describe having at sidecar should total to less than 78 and what you describe having at Blue Ribbon should be more than 88."

Well, you are just wrong. I told you what we ate and what the bills were, I can't do much more than that. All you have to do is go online and check out the menus, but I guess it makes you feel better to imply I am lying.

"I would say it's a weird juxtaposition of Sidecar having a bad night, and Blue Ribbon a good one (waiter comping stuff, etc)."

Perhaps, but from what I can tell, Blue Ribbon doesn't have bad nights.

    "The rib entree doesn't exist."

Yeah, I said that. The waiter told me that they simply charge people for two rib appetizers and throw in mashed potatoes and either spinach or collard greens.

"Blue Ribbon is way more expensive."

Not if you order carefully. If you get burgers and beers, the quality and service make up for the relatively small difference in cost. My ribs and my wife's $23 three course meal were yummy and fairly priced. And, I left stuffed.

"And the fried chicken at Sidecar is among the best in Park Slope."

I have heard this, and I have also heard it is overrated, but I worked in restaurants for many years before becoming a teacher, and if the service sucks, I won't go back. What kind of establishment has their waiters and staff doing shots on the floor yet can't even put in an order when there are only three tables?
  • 50% difference is NOT 'relatively small' difference in cost.

Also, if you found service to be that horrible, complaining to management would be much more effective than complaining here.
  • Subject: Bonnie's

I stopped by Bonnie's for takeout the other night, and I'd never been there before. The burger was about average for an American burger, which means it was surprisingly good for a New York City burger. The fact is, I always have trouble finding good burgers in this city, so a decent burger, like the ones they have at Bonnie's, is a really great find. Most burgers in New York have really bad, not-fresh meat. The places people rave about, like Shake Shack, have burgers that are about as good as any typical burger you'd get in the rest of the country (not including from fast food chains).

More surprisingly, Bonnie's Buffalo style chicken wings were really good, and I'm from western NY, so I know my wings.
  • Mpmav1,

Ya know, I would give some places a second chance, but my Sidecar experience was just so bad.

When I was at Sidecar, my first beer came with two giggling staffers standing side by side. And they were laughing as one of them poured my beer and the other stood right next to her. My wife and I felt like idiots sitting there as two staffers were laughing while pouring. I finally made a comment like, "You must be training her to pour a beer."

This was all totally lame. I shouldn't have to feel this uncomfortable when paying for food and drinks at a bar with my wife.
  • Flexi wrote,

The difference in cost was about 10% or so. This is relatively small.

As far as complaining to management, why bother? Our order was lost, we saw a group of 6-7 people trying to figure out how the slip got lost, everyone was talking about our order for a least a minute or two. And then my crab cakes still manage to come out cold. Management knew about the situation and couldn't even make sure the order came out right.

This was one of those times where a manager just comes over and apologizes. The waitress didn't even apologize. I worked at a Sidecar type of bar for many years and when we royally messed up, which was rare, the manager just came out and said "sorry." The bill came with a free pudding, but it just didn't take the bad taste out of our experience.

I am almost 40 - this would have been only the second time in my life I didn't leave a tip, but my wife left $5 just because she can't see not doing so. We tip 20%, as a rule, and if the service stinks, we tip 15%. But this service deserved no tip.
  • I actually was not implying that you were lying when I said there was something fishy, I meant that perhaps someone miscalculated the bill, or you were comped something, etc.
  • It's a 10 dollar burger vs a 14.50 dollar burger. Look at the menu and compare, Flexi is write, it's not a 10% difference, it's almost a 50% difference. Your bill may have been closer to 10%, but that's no way to compare. It's great that you had a good experience at Blue Ribbon, I have had horrible experiences there. I don't think waitresses giggling sounds terrible and it sounds like Blue Ribbon is just more your style.
  • Flaco,

Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it. But the calculations, as far as I can tell, were correct. I was surprised to see a three course meal at Blue Ribbon for $23, but there it was! And it was really good. My wife's smoked chicken had a mole sauce (I think it was mole) that was just awesome and the chicken was tender as could be.
  • Flaco,

More my style? I have been to Mack's and 12th street so many times I can't count. Bar food is my favorite. We went to Blue Ribbon for a treat and when the bill came, my wife and I were shocked how close it was to the Sidecar bill. Now, if I wasn't stuffed, I would have probably wanted the sundae, but for $11.50 would have passed.

If two waitresses are acting in a way that makes you and your wife uncomfortable, then it is wrong. Were they stoned? Were they laughing because it is silly to train a person to pour beer at a table? Were they drunk from those shots the staff were doing? You should be comfortable at a restaurant and not subjected to such crap.

The booth was great, the lighting was great, it didn't have that "bar" smell (that smell of bar mats), it was clean, but the service and food were just awful. The French onion soup was just so bland. I mean, French onion soup is like eggs, how do you mess it up? It shouldn't be bland and boring. French onion soup should grab you by the throat and say, "Eat me, I am yummy in your tummy."

Again, I think the Sidecar folks must have played with Gobots growing up.
  • you've now written 17 posts on this thread about how much you love blue ribbon and hate sidecar.

    you don't find that odd?

blue ribbon is fine, but overrated.
  • belzjm,

What I find odd is that people suggest that my experience is "fishy" or suggest that they are glad they won't run in to me in public.

I run some online forums and I know that most members are lurkers. So, my gut is that this thread has been helpful to some, maybe many, and the others just don't read it.
  • This is the thread that forced me out of the shadows and into registering.

First of all, the knocks against sidecar are completely warranted. I live within blocks and have eaten there numerous times. To refer to them as inconsistent is completely fair. I've had great meals, I've had really forgettable meals. Don't ask me why they have that strange chair/table arrangements after the jukebox. I've had a waiter list the entire specials list and then take our order, which didnt include any specials, followed by sayng "some recession huh". This happened twice in 6 months. Their waitstaff (the dudes) does have a smug sense of entitlement like I owe it to them to order $18 worth of oysters at their bar everytime I'm there.

As for blue ribbon. Well, what is there to say. It's really great food at a really high price. No way around it. You get what you pay for.
