I couldn't attend the meeting but I'm relieved that the block party has been cancelled.
Thanks for putting everything into focus. Two young men were
brutally murdered in a crowded area, causing chaos and
panic. I saw one of the young men's family members
on TV, pleading for help so the police can find the killers. It's a
tragedy that no one has stepped forward. -
'grandma's homemade cookies is not how we do here on St. Johns'.
i think the detective's quote below shows "how we do here on St. Johns."Detective Byrnes from the 77th, the lead homicide investigator on the Delk/Rock murders, talked about how the investigation is at a full stop and expressed his exasperation and confusion that the murders could happen in front of 500 people and there are no witnesses who have come forward. He asked for help in finding the killer.
maybe people would be a little more hesitant to go around murdering others on the street if they feared that bystanders would actually talk to the police. helluva culture on st. johns. same stuff going on with the recent shootings on franklin near dean and bergen. no one saw a thing!Mike Jone's 'enforcer', whose name I didn't catch, explained how 'when you come over to someone's house and they're watching tv, you don't ask them to change the channel.' Others explained how there is a community and traditions that have been in place here on St. Johns place for many years and they need to be respected.
a. your house is not on the street.
b. maybe if the traditions impacted the community in a positive way they would be respected -
I haven't visited this thread in several weeks and
was hoping to see an update concerning the murder
investigation. It's discouraging that no one has
stepped forward to identify the person who killed
the two young men and terrorized our neighborhood.
We're also astonished that the organizers continue to claim
that the block party was over when the
murders took place. This runs counter to what
we saw that night; as we've heard several times,
the music and partying shamelessly went on long after the
police rushed the victims to the hospital.
Sure, you can say the same things over and over
(e.g. There was no link between the murders
and the block party; it was actually a "child safety" event;
the party had the proper police permits; the party
ended before the murders). But that doesn't make them
true. -
There's been no word out on the street about arrests and I haven't read anything about it.
Amazing isn't it? On so many levels - the killings happened in front of all of those people and no one is willing to come forward. Its a terrible economy where justice is so cheap - if you take the thin veneer of 'snitches get stitches' off of the top its fear that's keeping anyone from speaking up. Fear of reprisal. It would take a lot of courage to stand up and point at the person that did this, the kind of courage that 19 year olds aren't usually noted for.
Imagine the Delk and Rock families having to lay down and go to sleep at night knowing that the killer is still out there. What an awful awful thing. -
I think there were a lot of people far older than 19 who saw what went down and aren't talking. And I think there is a very long and complex history, both local and more generalized in inner cities throughout the country, behind the fear of speaking up. But yes, it is an awful awful thing. Shameful, really, for the block and our whole neighborhood.

One month last night since the shootings and the Delk and Rock families were present at a vigil on the corner of Washington and St. Johns where their boys died.
