Pizza Restaurant at Nostrand and Union — Brooklynian

Pizza Restaurant at Nostrand and Union

Anyone know what's going on with this spot? Last Fall when it opened, it was a breath of fresh air to the area with its brick-oven pizza offerings and sidewalk seating. However, the doors and windows have been shut for the past several weeks. Is it permanently closed?

  • Since this place is owned by the same guy that owns the tavern across the street (dave is his name i believe) he might have it closed for a bit because there's just not good business rolling through. I haven't been there yet, i have no idea of the pricing structure, but perhaps the location and prices is causing him to shut the doors sometimes to save some green?
  • i don't think david owns ToN anymore, fwiw.
  • The pizza shop is closed for good under the current ownership. It was a partnership between two guys, one who had the lease on the space and the other that operated the business. They had problems with the landlord, and the guy who ran the business decided he wanted out. The landlord is now looking for either a new tenant or a new operator for a pizza shop.

David (who had the lease) has now sold or closed all of his business interests on that corner. The guys that operated Tavern after the reopening this spring purchased the business from David. He still hangs around from time to time, but he's supposed to be working on other restaurants in Bed-Stuy and St. Croix.

I actually think the pizza shop did a great business during the school year, with lines out of the door after the middle school let out in the afternoon. They seemed to have less business during the summer months, but then many places do. It was just a bad partnership that fizzled. Hopefully, the building owner will get someone in to either operate it as a pizza shop, or another business.
  • Well, it's a shame really. When it first opened- their food was really really good and we ordered from them quite a bit. I even bought pizza dough from owner- he charged me a lot, but explained that he ordered all his ingredients from Italy and showed me to prove it! Then something happened- there was a guy who made the pizzas and he just disappeared (what, like 8 months ago?) and then the food turned to crap!

Also, the young lady (I use the term loosely) was just AWFUL. She was rude and unhelpful, and you could just tell she hated her job. She really turned me off from going there and when the food went downhill, there just wasn't a justifiable reason to go back.

mod note -- takin' the spammy link outta here, too
    Ack! Fuckin spam!
  • Update- The pizza shop has been sold to new owners. They were in painting this week, and had a soft opening yesterday. I spoke to the new owner and he said that he is anxious to get back to making pizza. He's been in the business for over twenty years and this is his second shop. I tried a slice and thought it was good, better than the previous place. The owner is planning on having more than just pizza eventually. He also mentioned an afterschool special of a slice and soda for two bucks.

So, for those keeping score it looks like that corner is back up and running as a food location with Tavern and the pizzaria reopening, plus the new wing place opening around the corner on Union Street.
