Park Slope feels like one big ash tray today

Smoking is really expensive. I'm not sold that people are smoking more because of the recession, however I will believe that there are more people around during the day because of the recession.
I wish smoking was a good solution to being laid off/broke. -
I agree wholeheartedly. And many seem to perch outside my apartment window. My curtains smell like smoke. (And yes, I have spoken to the worst offenders and they have said they would move, and yet they perpetually "forget".)
-
Carmen,
Perhaps you are correct on both counts, I just can' recall ever noticing so much smoking in the slope/
ljnd,
Yeah, the first floor stoop smokers are a special bunch. We are on the first floor too and it so weird to me that folks think that smoking several feet away from an open window in the middle of summer is cool. I use the laundromat on 14 and 7th ave sometimes and have had to ask employees twice over the last several months not to smoke. One guy was repairing a machine and smoking in the laundromat and the other guy was smoking at the door. Very selfish (and illegal) to smoke inside, where people are cleaning their clothes. -
omg we must protect the babies

Babies be damned - I'm allergic.
-
I'm allergic to babies
-
I have noticed tons of cigarette butts on my street lately, a lot more than normal
-
Maybe it's the increase in Hipsters.
-
I don't know why people who smoke think the sidewalk is an appropriate place to leave their cigarettes butts.
When I was about 7 years old, I thought people had smoking parties on the sidewalk. I remember seeing a little mountain of butts and ashes. Then I realized people were just emptying their car's ashtrays onto the curb.
For some smoking is a disgusting habit from beginning to end. -
most smoke because its makes one look very cool
this is why we need more hallway monitors in our schools -
I was a smoker. I stopped a long time ago mainly because I couldn't stand coughing for thirty minutes every morning. There is nothing "cool" about smoking. It's a filthy, disgusting habit. After a while your tongue itches and kissing someone makes them taste ashes. Every time I see someone smoking I just think that person is a total idiot. People I know who smoke I tell them directly: "You're an idiot." If the idiot doesn't like it I say TS. And anyone who loves the smell of smoke I think should sit in an easy chair after setting it on fire. You smoke? You're an idiot. :x
-
I doubt smokers are blowing smoke in anyone's faces. If you really do not like smoke then call your congressman and tell him to have it made illegal.
If you don't like cigarette butts on the street, then call your congressman and have him put ashtrays on every corner.
If your allergic, then stay away from smokers.
If kissing someone makes them taste ashes, then only kiss smokers.
Every time I see someone going to church/synagogue I think that person is a total idiot.
So to each his own, deal with it. -
"Every time I see someone going to church/synagogue I think that person is a total idiot. "
agreed. -
"I doubt smokers are blowing smoke in anyone's faces."
Wrong. Smokers are often rude and walk on the same sidewalks we non-smokers do. Deal with it.
"Every time I see someone going to church/synagogue I think that person is a total idiot."
This doesn't make my clothes smell like an ash tray and my sinuses sore. Smoking on 7th avenue with people walking behind you is the same thing as going up to someone on 7th avenue and farting on them, in fact, the smoking is worse. Deal with it. -
Every time I hear someone belittle those who go to church/synagogue, I think, that person is a total idiot. I think, that person needs some tolerance for people who think differently then they do.
By the way, Obama and Biden go to church every Sunday, any thoughts on that? -

It's not like smokers stay away from the rest of us. As I say, I have a neighbor who sits on his stoop smoking - pretty much every two hours, and some days more frequently. That smoke comes directly in my front window; it is as if he is smoking in my living room. I do not want smoke in my living room. I am allergic to cigarette smoke. I have asked him to move several times, and each time he says, "Oh, sorry!" You'd think eventually he would get the point and not do it on the stoop - he has a chair further away in the front yard, but he never uses it.
If your allergic, then stay away from smokers.
By your logic, I should not use my living room, so he can smoke comfortably on the stoop. -
i don't mind smokers as they are part of our urban landscape
strolling among people with dog babies, politico-vegans, and transplanted carriage pushers
i do hate when their children ask me for a cigarettes -
ljnd,
Agreed.
Smokers have selfish feelings of oppression and entitlement. About three weeks ago I was at the Fort Green flea market eating lunch with about 40 other people eating near us. Several women sit down in the middle of this and start smoking. So gross. It was if they came over and just spat on us. Smoking in public places should be illegal. I am sure if I walked over and spat in their food, that would have been seen as wrong. But their smoke blowing in my lunch is somehow acceptable. -

Is this against the law?
I don't think so.
If you don't like it, talk to him. If he doesn't respect your feelings close your windows, move to your own private Idaho or suck it up. -
you have serious issues pokersloper.
you are the reason why people write articles in new york magazine about park slope.
get a life.
and yes, karl, i hate that too. makes me very uncomfortable. i get asked at least once a week by a kid (i'm guessing 15/16) to bum a smoke. never give them one, obviously. -
belzjm,
You didn't answer my question. You said that people who go to church are idiots. So I assumed you were calling Obama and Biden idiots. Still awaiting your educated and tolerant response.
MeredithB,
Smoking and smokers are gross. Suck it up.
My guess is that smoking in public, in Park Slope, will be illegal within the decade, as it should be. -

But it's not.
I dislike young kids in bars, restaurants and movie theaters.
I dislike people double-parking to go worship some fairy tale superstition.
But I suck it up.
And don't give me the second hand smoke line. You live in NYC, a place filled with extreme amounts of exhaust.
Call your city council member, your assemblyman, your congressman.
Or cough as if the smoke is bothering you and that the smoker should give a shit about you as if you are special. -

well, good luck getting it outlawed. I'm all for that. -
MeredithB,
You chose to read a thread about smoking, suck it up. If you don't like my thoughts, call your city council member, your assemblyman, your congressman.
PS - smoking and smokers are gross. -

Have a nice day MeredithB. -
That's nice, you feel you are entitled to something that isn't a law, you want people around you to conform to your likes and dislikes.
And I choose to not only read a thread about smoking but comment on it and if you don;t like what I say, suck it up.
Whiner. -
I quit smoking almost 2 years ago, but I have to say that pokersloper's rebuttals here are some of the weakest I've seen in a long time.
-
MeredithB,
Thank you for choosing to read my thread. So suck it up.
Whiner.
Have a nice day. -
Carnivore,
I have to say, I have hated smoking for a long time, but your luke warm support of smoking is the weakest I have seen in a long time.
Have a nice day.
