BARK made me BARF
i was so excited to hear about this new hotdog place. went there for lunch with a friend: we had of 2 hot dogs, 2 fries, 2 drinks (one a milkshake one a soda)...grand total..................... $27. you heard it here first...TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS for the worst hot dogs I have ever eaten. I am not kidding. the topping was what tasted like over cooked onions and saurkraut (one of each). fries were as small as those potato sticks you get in a can. and the milkshake was maybe 10 oz. and not exactly the tastiest i've ever had. I think the dogs were bland and even undercooked if you are trying for the crispy outside casing..they only cooked 2 sides of the dog. i'd rather have a dirty water dog or a nathans anytime...
The place was nice, side tables were too small for the chairs that were too high and it was weird to sit there and try to eat. the bigger tables were fine. Too many screaming kids (don't get me started on that cause that's a whole other thread and this is about the hotdog!)
Frankly, I don't think i'll be back and that's too bad cause i was really hoping to like it there...

You wouldn't know a good dog if it bit you.

Ha..get it,....frank ly.............

Check out Murrays (?) on 5th Ave across from MS 51. Good prices great dogs. Woof.

you have 3 posts and one of them is dogging this place? Sorry if I don't take your word for it. [-(

Huh? What are the other posts about?
Most of Bark's hot dogs cost around $5 and the chili cheddar fries are also $5, so if you get 2 digs, 2 fries, and 2 drinks, you could spend $27. If the food is very tasty, maybe it's a good deal. -
Yeah, I looked at the menu the other day and was amazed at how expensive the hotdogs are. No frank is worth $5, unless, of course, it comes with a side of advice, and a subscription to the Sporting News. Wouldn't even set foot in the place.
-
The dogs are good. Not $5 good, but good non-the-less. Onion rings and french fries and toppings are pretty small, not even mediocre and pricey. Granted they just opened, but still, they should consider lowering the prices somewhat.
-
ate at bark again tonight for the 3rd time since they've opened.
i think it's absolutely terrific. tried 3 different dogs now and they have each been better than the next.
i find no problem with the prices at all, and 3 bucks for the six points bark red ale is a deal. 10 bucks for a dog, beer and split of fries.
the disco fries are UNREAL. best fries i've ever had.
keep in mind, the toppings are not from key food. they are HOMEMADE. the guys who opened the place are from franny's and from cafe grey in manhattan. the actual hotdogs themselves are some of the best i've had and the buns are amazing.
will be back soon. -
doublediamond--what difference does it make how many posts someone has or what their previous posts were about? everyone is entitled to an opinion and this board is FULL of opnions, now ain't it......
That said, I agree...i didn't love the dogs or the toppings. Didn't even like my shake. and i thought it was way too expensive for hot dogs. interesting the ale is cheaper than the dogs...
I know Grey personally and it doesn't mean the chefs should charge the prices he charges at his cafe for a hotdog in park slope.... -
So, um, did the place actually make you puke? If not, the thread title is a little libelous, makes it look like you have an axe to grind and does nothin for your credibility. Not being your cup of tea or being what you would consider a poor value is one thing, making you ill is something completely different.

I have to agree with DD - this smells of the anti-shill. Any time an account is created for the express purpose of boisterous praise or bashing, you've gotta wonder if the OP has some skin in the game. -

anti-shill? seriously?
my only other thread was about the ugly scarey clown...you folks with 1000's of posts are the ones who keep anyone else away from this site. You think your words are the only words to be heard. No one else's opinions matter but yours so why should anyone say anything on this board. You manage to instigate to the point of hatred.
I have read this site for years now and frankly never wanted to say anything because of the way you all attack people. not worth my time, breath, sweat or tears....Be gone you fools. -
buh bye. Thanks for playing.

I want to try their breakfast. The hot dog I had was pretty good. Can you just request toppings there? I'm a onions fan.
-
My experience with this place is that it is mostly hype as well. I split a sandwich, hot dogs, and onion rings with the person who was with me, and wasn't impressed by anything. First off - we got the wrong sandwich, but it wasn't worth making a fuss and returning. Second, we asked for onions on the dog... and ended up with literally about a half teaspoon of minutely diced red onion. If you didn't happen to look closely, you'd never notice they were there- certainly not from the taste. It may be an artistic garnish, but that's not what I'm looking for. The onion rings were small, tasted almost exclusively of breading, and extremely greasy.
I'd love to see a blind taste test between these and Nathans, or even just a pack of relatively decent hot dogs from Key Food. The difference in price does not correspond to a difference in value. -
I'm kind of torn with Bark. I do like the hot dogs, although I can get the same taste from Boar's Head, and the same taste and quality whenever I go up to certain places in New England. Both for a lot less money. I also appreciate that they're employing an eco-friendly policy of composting waste and using bio-degradable kitchenware (they really should advertise their green policy). Their coffee and iced coffee is probably one of the best in the area. But Man-O-Man-O-Schevitz the cost. They're charging Manhattan prices for Richard Simmons' sized portions. And, other menu items such as their shrimp grits, potatoes, onion rings, toppings, etc, they need work in flavor and portion size. Granted, I'm "big boned', so I say this selfishly.
The owners seem like nice, hard working kids who want to carve out a niche and actually present decent tasting food. But in these internet times where quick reviews can make or break you even more quickly, they need to come up with a modified game plan. -
I think that $5.00 for dog with sauerkraut is pretty high when the Shake Shack only charges $3.75.
-
re: cost
people said the same thing about franny's when they first opened (and some continue to say it). that it's too expensive and that pizza shouldn't cost this much, etc.
and now it's one of the most successful restaurants in brooklyn.
just sayin'. it will take some getting used to (and possibly some education) for people to realize that the quality of the food at bark can not be compared to nathan's or even shake shake. -
belzjm wrote: re: cost
And I would agree with you except the food at Bark doesn't jump at you like Franny's, Larder or even DiFara where the slices have recently gone up to $5.

I actually want these guys to succeed, but IMO, they won't if they don't come up with a compromise between the cost and size. -
Where is this place? Do they have veggie-dogs? Although, I have to say that paying $5 for a veggie dog is not something I'm down with. (unless it's homemade, otherwise I'm just splurging for someone else to heat up a TofuPup)

Bark Hot Dogs
474 Bergen St., nr. Flatbush Ave., Park Slope 718-789-1939
One way Joshua Sharkey and Brandon Gillis, chef-partners of Bark Hot Dogs, intend to distinguish their enterprise from, say, Gray’s Papaya is by the method they’ll use to finish their pork-and-beef wieners. Rather than just turning them over casually on the griddle, they’ll baste them like a Peter Luger porterhouse with—get this—housemade smoked lard butter. Another example: making everything from pickles to sauerkraut in-house, and meticulously sourcing the rest from top-notch purveyors. The franks (including an all-beef version) are churned out upstate by a venerable Austrian sausage maker, the beans are of the heirloom variety, and the bacon from S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. Because hot dogs for breakfast—lard-butter-basted or not—can be a tough sell, there’s also a morning menu of homemade biscuits and egg sandwiches. -
Willie's dogs on 5th ave b/t 4th and 5th st rules. and the prices are less than Bark. Their veggie dogs are great too.
Off-topic, anyone who pays $5 for a slice of pizza needs a smack upside the head. Fact: The best pizza in new york city can be found at L'asso at the corner of Kenmare St. and Mott. You can disagree but you would be wrong. $2 for a slice, $6 for 2 slices and a beer or wine. Try to beat that. -
i've had willie's and the comparison to bark is like apples and oranges.
unfortunately i won't be going back to willie's after trying bark. -
which do you like better, apples or oranges?

People are questioning your credibility, not attacking you - if you've read this board for as long as you say you have, you'd know that the skepticism is for good reason. Your response to the skepticism is interesting - you're still here, which speaks well, but instead of building your case, you go on a childish rant about people not automatically believing every word out of your mouth. Nice.

And Snookers & Snookers, I'm happy to say,
Are the only cake-cookers who cook cakes today
Made of guaranteed, certified, strictly Grade A
Peppermint cucumber sausage-paste butter!
And the world's finest cake slicers, Dutter & Dutter & Dutter & Dutter,
With hatchets a-flutter,
High up on the poop deck, stand ready to cut her.
(everything I need to know about overpriced, rip-off, yuppie-bait bullshit food, I learned from Dr. Seuss). -

On-topic of the Off-topic, I am more than happy to pay $5 and a slap upside fthe head for a Dom Demarco slice. But not the two hour line of my loss of a side of meatballs option.

Back to the on-topic, Bark is competing with every hot dog vendor in New York, whether they want to or not. -
i think willies is great (as a vegetarian). the toppings at willies are what really makes it worth going out for a tofu dog. the carrot dog is pretty great too though.
i am excited to try bark but mainly for the 'cherry bourbon shake' and the breakfast.
i wish one of these hot dog places would carry a vegetarian sausage like the field roast ones or something. it'd be a lot more interesting than just a veggie dog. -
Has anyone tried the hot dogs at Five Guys? I had a burger there today and it was quite yummy.
Howdy, Stranger!
