Hmmm, how lord of the flies-esque. Never heard that one before. However, I do know that you can buy live chickens in Bushwick, and apparently eating freshly butchered chicken is a whole different culinary experience--like sushi compared to frozen fishsticks.

again, wild story, but my cousin (NYPD) swears by it...it was probably somewhere in crown heights or bushwick, but he said he and his partner drove by an empty lot where a rooster was just running around. the rooster had twenties, I think, tacked all over it (I guess on the feathers). my cousin was like, well, hell, free money, but the partner (more experienced or less ridiculous) wisely counseled that "that was some voodoo sh*t, don't go near it" and they left it there, running around. who knows, maybe another ridiculous tale, but amusing nonetheless. -
i never like the projects in that area! had a few customers move out of there before.

My son goes to school across the street from a cemetery and has come home on several occasions with stories of the rooster that lives there. Some of the parents are from the old country and they swear that the rooster is part of a ritual and that the kids should stay far away from them. -

i work in east new york and there is a big park a few blocks away inside of which the chicken-voodoo ritual is performed. i had always assumed it was a santeria thing, due to the large number of dominican and puerto rican folks in the 'nabe who practice santeria. however, there are also many of afro-carribean heritage, so it could belong to another faith. i had always assumed the live-chicken trade around there was primarily to supply this activity. dont they have a live-chicken shop right around 4th and sackett, tho? i recall seeing some that got loose a number of years ago.again, wild story, but my cousin (NYPD) swears by it...it was probably somewhere in crown heights or bushwick, but he said he and his partner drove by an empty lot where a rooster was just running around. the rooster had twenties, I think, tacked all over it (I guess on the feathers). my cousin was like, well, hell, free money, but the partner (more experienced or less ridiculous) wisely counseled that "that was some voodoo sh*t, don't go near it" and they left it there, running around. who knows, maybe another ridiculous tale, but amusing nonetheless.

and, yes, i take jay street detour from the manhattan bridge by bike, regardless of how often i need to stop and even dismount to navigate barriers. and then state street to whatever side street looks least congested. more often, i just bear with the rude 4-abreast pedestrians on the brooklyn bridge -

yuck. NO RESPECT!
(the pedestrians, that is, have none for bicyclists.)
Howdy, Stranger!
