teaching jobs?

Hey,

My husband is an non-certified teacher who is working (very slowly) on his PhD, and also looking for a teaching job in NY. He's not too interested in the certification program since he has 8 years experience teaching at University as an adjunct and also teaching ESL around the world. Well, in 2 countries. Doesn't fancy taking a course on what he already knows. And so is wondering about teaching in private schools.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there's anyone out there that has gone this route? How does one acquire a job at a private high school? He can teach English, History, Social STudies - or ESL, though not his favourite. Any tips on how to approach schools? We're relatively new here and he's beginning to think about this - just thought I'd post on the offchance that someone has some gems of wisdom.. cheers if you do.

  • i forgot: also Literature and Philosophy as subjects.
  • Well, you could simply call up the schools and ask if they have teaching positions available. Or, the Sunday New York Times has an education classified listing in the Week in Review section. I'm not sure what the hiring cycle is for middle and high schools, though most colleges have completed their searches for fall openings. He might also want to think about some adjuncting work in the meantime.

    Good luck.
  • The Sunday NY Times "Week in Review" section is always a good place to look, since that's where most schools list their positions.

You might also try listing yourself with one of the commercial placement agencies that some of the private schools use. Two that I know are very popular are Carney, Sandoe & Associates (www.carneysandoe.com), and the Iredell's Independent School Placement (www.ispnewyork.com), which is specific to New York.

Also, check out the job listings and other resources at the non-profit NAIS (www.nais.org), the National Association of Independent Schools, and NYSAIS (www.nysais.org), the NYS association. The Klingenstein Center at Teacher's College (www.klingenstein.org) is also occasionally somewhat useful.

Most schools try to finalize fall contracts in March and April, but there are often openings through the summer and right up to the start of school. Good luck.
  • try cuny. they hire alot of teachers for their adult extended education thing programs.
  • include catholic schools in private schools if he is looking to teach HS and it shouldn't be a problem. just a thought.
