The 3/50 Project

Hi all, this is sort of Park Slope related because I saw a flyer taped to the glass inside of Naidre's on 7th ave. It seems like a great idea. I'm not sure of the full politics behind, but it's worthwhile looking into...

  • Don't the people who work at national chains live locally too? And don't national chains pay local payroll taxes?

    Just wondering.
  • I needed a new kitchen faucet. I went to the local place and they wanted over $200. I went to the national chain big box store and they wanted $118. I'm happy to spend a little more to support my local merchants but I can't afford to spend that much more.

the flyer doesn't say no money stays local if spent at chains, just that less does, which makes sense since national chains pay payroll tax on administrative employees wherever their headquarters are located.
  • But if I buy it online aren't I keeping the USPS/UPS guy employed?
  • the USPS guy will be employed regardless, so no points for that.

the local stores get goods delivered, too, so the UPS guy's job is probably also safe.
  • But shouldn't I be more concerned with myself saving a dollar than me saving a store? It's not like I'm rich yo.
  • and hey, monopolies work out great, am i right? plus, nothing cheers up a neighborhood like empty storefronts and low wage jobs!

in the faucet example above, i see going with the big box. if the difference is a dollar or two, thinking about the bigger picture might be in order.

actually checking the cost is good, too. for example, given that unnameable books (now on vandy) gives a 20% discount on special orders, it's basically as cheap for me to buy from them than from amazon, even though amazon might seem like it will always be cheaper.
  • I hear ya about a dollar or two.

Amazon sells used books too, which are considerably cheaper than new ones.

And doesn't the time spent factor in?

    Time is money, no?
  • you clearly don't share my post office. going to the bookstore a second time (or a first time, if i've called in my order) is definitely faster and less stressful than involving the mail.
  • ah, I have a super who collects my packages. I hear you though, anytime I have to pick up a package at the post office I just usually let them return it and get a refund.

Wait, how does this work? I live a couple of blocks away and only noticed the store a week or two ago. (I hope it's new-ish or I really need to pay more attention. Bought a book there over the weekend though.) If I order a new book from them there's a 20% discount?

  • unnameable sells new and used books. if you want something and they don't have it, they'll order it for you and give you 20% off the cover price. in my experience, they usually get it in within a week or so.

    i <3 unnameable.

me too, 'cause i don't have $50 to spend at any store, chain or no. sorry, new york; i love you and your citizens, but you are sucking up too much of my income in rent and taxes for me to have any to spare in your boutiques.

  • Maybe when taxes are cut in this city. Perhaps obama should have bailed out small businesses instead of the auto industry, banks, freddie and fannie etc. Glenn Beck had a good show the other day about small businesses and how they are the backbone of America yet are getting killed with taxes and also if card check and cap and trade take effect.
