Robberies on 16th St
An apartment in my building was robbed and several bikes stolen from the hallway over the past few days. Everyone reported seeing the same man trying to get in on Saturday. He buzzed my apartment and I refused to let him in. I know he tried this with several other neighbors and a few of us even asked him why he was hanging around. He gave vague answers about waiting for someone. We have had work being done in our building for the past few weeks and have had a lot of people in and out of the basement so we assumed he was with the crew.
He had a lengthy conversation with a neighbor moving in and told her several things that turned out to be completely fabricated (naming a friend who lived in a fictional apartment, claiming a woman who lives in the building next door was his mother..etc). That night a bike was taken and then yesterday that same woman's apartment was robbed and a 2nd bike taken.
I am reluctant to put up a description because we are not sure he is responsible. I would feel terrible if I gave out a description and it turned out he had nothing to do with this.
I am just posting so people can be a little more alert than usual.
Please everyone be on the lookout for shady characters and do not buzz strangers into your building! Its not always going to be like that Seinfeld episode.
If you dont know them, dont let them come in behind you!

In the past few weeks there have been at least 3 house break-ins on Windsor Place and 16th street, both between PPW and 8th where the perps have busted in through the back yards. Scary stuff.

It's easier than you would think in certain buildings. Once you get into one, you can easily move from yard to yard at night.
It seems that the roof of my building was left unlocked and I know you can move from roof to roof easily. This weather is making people lazy.
I wish everyone was as paranoid as I am. Close the damn door behind you, people! -

I always buzz in strangers, people should lock their front doors and take responsibility for their own security.

no kidding! i'd say 80% of the time when i come home the front door of my building is either ajar or wedged open with the entryway carpet, even though there is no one around. it makes me crazy. i was mugged in my last building because the front door didn't lock behind me, and now i am a spazz about securely shutting doors, even in my office building. whenever i come home and find the door open i'm scared to death of being jumped in the hallway. there is only so much i can do to take responsibility for my own security, prospectheightsyo; sometimes a little consideration for others' security is nice, too. -

Let's see if you feel the same way after you get jumped by somebody who was buzzed in by a neighbor and hid out in the stairwell waiting for a victim.
(p.s. your band still sucks) -

Not to jump down your throat... but are you kidding?
Of course everyone is responsible for locking their own door but obviously security in a multi-dwelling is compromised if the entry doors are left open or people like you are too lazy or selfish to screen people seeking entry to the building and just get buzzed in. -

Do you know every single person who lives in your building? Do you buzz in delivery guys, UPS people? When you screen these strangers and they tell you theyre staying with a friend or living in a certain room do you even turn them away if you dont recognize them?
I'm not worried about being jumped in my building. my life is not crippled with fear, sorry. -

Good question. If you dont live in a gated community, maybe you should put up an electric fence around your front lawn?

There is a difference between being crippled with fear and being cautious. I have 16 units in my building and although I dont know everyone's name you do get to know their faces and the faces of their frequent visitors.
And yes, if I dont have a good feeling about someone I dont let them in. Sometimes I feel bad and other times I know it was the right thing to do.
By the way, you can lock the front door to your apartment and still have it crowbarred. It just happened in my boyfriend's building. Several apartments in the middle of the day!
Vidro3, it has not been in the paper. It happened Saturday & Monday so I think it would be next week. -
