So now you want to turn it into a race issue? Did anyone mention race?
Thats a big assumption and a nasty accusation. -

But you called me a rape victim "blamer", which is especially APPALLING, considering I'm female. If you let certain people in, and not others "who dont feel right" what else am I to assume?

You seemed to think people don't deserve to feel safe and should basically assume their things will be taken from them. Sorry to jump to that conclusion but it looked like thats where you were heading with things.
This is why I cant understand the race issue. No one mentioned race other than you. -

The people who are turned away from my building the most are white males in their early 20s who have been overserved at Farrells.
I dont know why you would think I only turn away non-whites. -

Yes. I do. Wtf?
My point is that I dont know every single person in my building. People are constantly moving in and out of my building. If someone comes in after me, I'm not going to stop them and ask them a million questions. Do you?
Why would you let someone in the building if you don't know that they live there?
Are you so afraid of offending someone by questioning if they actually live there that you just buzz anyone in?
And you need to clarify what you mean by "I always buzz in strangers." Can you see them? Do you go down to meet them? Or does the bell just ring, someone says "pizza" and you let them in? -

If they say they live in a certain unit whose tenant I'm not familiar with, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I rarely see my neighbors. I can see the people when i buzz them in via a video camera.

The situation in your building sounds very different from the average building (video camera, storage spaces..etc). Most tenants are lucky to have a working buzzer. Since we do not have these luxuries, we need to do things differently than you do.

Fair enough...apologies!

MOD NOTE:
It's nice that you all apologized to each other. In the future, please find a way to disagree civilly, in accordance with the board rules. Name-calling is explicitly against the rules, and future behavior of that sort is grounds for having your post removed and/or your account suspended.
Thank you.

I refuse to apologize to any person that would intentionally put their neighbors in harm's way. The quote "I always buzz in strangers, people should lock their front doors and take responsibility for their own security" speaks for itself . No subsequent attempt to mollify it or "make nice" should be considered. If that describes the feelings and actions of that person, i.e., to intentionally flout building rules and common sense by buzzing everyone in, then that person deserves to be taken to task. Speak to a few victims and then assess the true, selfish meaning of that quote!

Several years ago my sister in-law's friend came home after work and was raped in front of her own apartment door. The only other apartment in the building was rented to a family who did not speak English and they most likely just buzzed the rapist in.
People in my building prop the door open all the time when they run to the store or around the corner, and I always close it. Some have gotten rather mad with me, and I always respond the same way, "My wife is not going to get raped because you don't want to carry your keys." We had a situation where someone's brother was staying for a few months, but the sister couldn't be bothered to make him keys, so he propped the door all the time. It turned into a stupid game.
In the end, I think it is both dangerous and selfish to put other people in a situation where people who do not belong in your building have access to your building.
My landlord doesn't even have keys to my apartment at this point because I noticed that he would sometimes leave his master key chain in the basement where someone could take it and he must have lost the keys to my apartment 7-8 times. He wants keys for an emergency, but I tell him he is more dangerous then a gas leak and that he needs to take me to court if he wants another set of keys. It is tough to live in a building with people and/or a landlord who do not respect your safety. -
I don't get it...I never buzz strangers in. That doesn't even make any fucking sense. If the caller isn't for me why the hell would I let them in? I just look out my window and if they keep buzzing yell down and ask what the hell they want and tell them to stop ringing the wrong buzzer.
People in my old building would prop the door open all of the time...until the people on the top floor got robbed. -

I think usually it's laziness. I lived in a building with 20 units, many of which did not face the street and the intercom on their buzzers didn't work. Instead of going down or getting the LL to fix the intercom, they just buzzed anyone in. Also, many had very cheap stabilized rents (a few hundred for 800+ sf) and did not want to rock the boat with the LL who was looking for reasons to get them out. The worst offender was the manager who lived there, though. She is mostly deaf so she'll just buzz anyone in.
I lived on the lobby floor so I was always shutting the door when people left it propped. And I never let in anyone, no matter how awkward it seemed if I didn't know they belonged there. People who had been robbed in the building also kept an eye on the front door.
Dottie, thanks for sharing. It's good to pass this kind of info around and remind folks to do what they can to protect themselves.
Howdy, Stranger!
