WARNING: Buy perishable cheese at Fairway at your own risk! — Brooklynian

WARNING: Buy perishable cheese at Fairway at your own risk!

2nd time this has happened to me - bought burrata at Fairway Red Hook, labeled on outside container sell by 8/24, open it up and the bag inside container is marked sell by 8/15 and cheese is starting to smell and is inedible. This is both illegal and unethical. I complained the 1st time and they swore it was a mistake - now it's obvious that it's store policy. Crooks!

  • We love Fairway but won't buy any Kosher chicken there anymore. It was bad both times.
  • Been buying cheese there since they opened w/o incident. Will be sure to check from now on
  • How strange. Fairway is known for their cheeses. Take this information higher up. Steve Jenkins (I assume he's still their cheesemonger?) will want to hear this.
  • Why aren't you taking this up with the store? I've never met customer service that was so willing to work with me...give it a shot, rather than screaming bloody murder.
  • not screaming, just commenting.
  • Last night I was in Fairway around 6 PM and all the lights went out, and their back up generator would not work. Everyone was told to leave the store immediately. I don't know when they got back electricity, but I would be wary about buying anything perishable from them for the next few days.
  • I think Livetotravel is just a troll that owns Trader Joes and is just posting this to trash Fairway! Lying dormant for 1611 posts... now just making the move.

    Touche!
Those who have been around the last two days understand this.

I appreciate the heads up. It is easy enough to either open these questionable products or (I have done this in other places where I walked out with spoiled food that I discovered at home)... find a manager and ask THEM to open the product to see the inside date with a nice explanation that you had a problem once before and that you intend to buy the product now but you would appreciate it if they would just check the dates match.

Now as far as the power outage I have no perky solution other than be careful what you buy at the Fair store on perishables for a little while. Geez I hate bringing home icecream that has melted, refroze and has those nasty ice crystals in it!
  • Sorry, I was cranky last night. I would definitely take it up with the big cheese there...they have a huge rep in cheeses, and would hate to know people were undersatisfied, I would think.
  • I had a problem there once with prime steak I purchased - they told me (over the phone) to discard the offensive meat, and a credit would be waiting for me at the store next time I shopped. Pretty great customer service.
  • I just re-read the original post which has troll written all over it. To begin with, who in Brooklyn calls it "Fairway Red Hook"? It's just Fairway. We know it's in Red Hook. Any post that ends with "Spread the word" and no name is suspect in itself. Use your brains!

Welcome newbie. Livetotravel is a longtime poster here, who we know to be a legitimate food enthusiast. Plenty of people in Brooklyn shop at Manhattan Fairways, if they work nearby.
    :D

Live to travel = 1600+ posts
    Salix = 5

Even more importantly, Livetotravel has been here for almost 4 years! As another poster mentioned above, it's absurd to think that s/he's been laying in wait all that time so that s/he could troll about Fairway now.

hahaha.... right. I said it as a joke... but good for you for actually believing it!
  • I love cheese, have eaten all kinds of it from all over the place since I was a kid.

The one thing have personally found with some regularity is that the Brie at the Fairway tends to be a bit more ripe or perhaps ripened differently than I'd care for, more often than not having the ammonia odor/flavor to it that Brie gets beyond a certain stage of ripening.

Some people love it, or don't mind it. Not at all my thing, to put it politely.

The odd thing with this isn't a matter of merely avoiding the ones that look more ripe (more settled, with discolored rinds..again, which some folks love).

I've deliberately picked more firm, younger looking ones there to be on the safe side and have still often ended up with ones with a definite ammonia nature to them.

Haven't had this issue when buying elsewhere, just Fairway. Perhaps its just the way their supplier ripens them, or the preference of their buyer, catering to folks who like that flavor.

Me, not so much. So perhaps it's just me.

But other than that, and the very minor bummer that their cafe's hot coffee regularly ends up made or kept way too bitter (in spite of all the fantastic coffee beans they have over there) I have to be fair and say...

I love the place. Full of so many wonderful things. I get happy just thinking about going over there. (ha)

Exact same thing happened to us. Except I think I fell for it 3 times. No more.

    Best. Job title. Ever.
  • Jeffrey - I can haz stinky amonia cheese? Pls to send me
  • Flexi - Pls to trade for expected totchos. K thx.
  • Ha - this turned into an amusing post with all the newbie troll spotters out there ;-)

Update - called the store manager in Red Hook - no returned call.

Lodged my complaint on Steve Jenkins' blog and he decided not o allow it to be posted - nor has he responded to me. (http://www.fairwaymarket.com/blog/ )

Direct messaged them on Twitter - no response

I will take the rotten burrata back to the store when I return next weekend - should be pleasant to inspect by then don't ya think.

I heard from a chef friend of mine that this is a troublesome occurrence (relabeling that it is) at FM.

I loved FM - but after 2 occasions of identical illegal relabeling of the same product - and being ignored by their management - I'm now on a public service campaign to inform anyone who will listen ;-)
  • At least you didn't get any of this!
  • Carnivore wrote: At least you didn't get any of this!
yuk! although I did get "rotten cheese" at least mine didn't have any critters in it!
  • Carnivore wrote: At least you didn't get any of this!
That cheese is just about the grossest thing I have ever seen.

Warning: this is a video of the cheese. NOT for people with weak stomachs.

I find it troubling that they are ignoring you...unless this all transpired with your calls/emails happening over the weekend...I would give them till Tueday or so before assuming they are ignoring you.

i foyu want a Kosher chicken venture in to Borough park or Midwood.

But, serious... It is unforgiveable that if a store carries "kosher" stuff and let us say perhaps it does not sell well or quickly that they do not go through dates and disgard rather than let someone buy product that is beyond reasonable, fresh consumption date.
  • Very funny. I may be a newbie to the list, but not to Brooklyn! (I am to be impressed with 4 years?) Neither a newbie to Fairway. I can remember when there was only one Fairway - in my old Grad school stomping grounds. Now there are three (anytthing outside NYC doesn't count :D ). Chomp on.

If I ever bought anything that was old or bad at Fairway it wouldn't be worth it for me to hop into my car, drive down to Fairway, confront the manager (with questionable results), and then drive back.

I'd just chalk it up as "lesson learned" and make a post on Brooklynian.
  • On my first shopping expedition to Fairway, I purchased (among many other items) a $14 steak. Somehow, the steak did not find its way into my cart after I paid for it.

When I got home and realized my error, I phone the store and spoke with customer service.

"No problem," they said, "there will be a credit waiting for you on your next trip to the store."

And there was, a month or so later, when I went back.

I was quite pleased... I cannot imagine Key Food or D'Agostino being so on top of things and so accommodating.
  • Definitely double-check your receipt upon leaving - I found a "hot latte" that I neither ordered nor consumed added to my bill yesterday...
