New South Slope Bakery: Little Buddy Biscuit Company

My buddy Pete Solomita and his wife Jill have opened up a new bakery, Little Buddy Biscuit Company, located at 635 5th Avenue right across the street from Eagle Provisions. Little Buddy is a micro-bakery, they bake in small batches which means no preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, or hydrogenated oils and other freaky weird stuff are used. They also serve Fair Trade organic coffees & teas, and the very amazing Jane's Ice Cream, handmade in the Hudson Valley.

And here's Pete at work. At risk of being a shill... I've been a big fan of Pete's cookies and pastries even before it was his profession. Little Buddy baked goods are all natural, some are savory and some are sweet — roasted pepper with feta muffins, spicy candied ginger snaps, chili-chocolate chip, crumb buns, quick breads, coffee cakes, vegan stuff, and of course my favorite the classic wheel-size peanut butter cookie... just to name a few.

You may know Eric Rochow from such infamous Brooklynian posts as "band kicks dog", here he is duking it out in Pete's kitchen over this roasted pepper feta muffin. It's worth battling over.

    :D

Thanks for the post with pics. We will come check you guys out one of these days for sure!
  • Several years ago, when I used to bake red velvet cakes (and a few other items) for Naidres, I always saw Little Buddy cookies in the cases there. That's when I became addicted -- they are terrific and worth every calorie! Congrats on the new place -- I'll stop by soon.
    Susan
  • I will always miss the Regina/Regio bakery that had been there forever.
  • Well you sparked my interest... especially the less sweet side and more savory.
  • sounds really great actually.

only drawback is that people who work won't ever be able to frequent your store since it closes at 5:30.

i'll try to hit it up some saturday though. love the sound of some of the savory items especially, and only wish i could pop down some evening and try them out!
  • Well I get the idea of opening early... catch the coffee and "take away" breakfast crowd. The Bakery business is a rough one and demands long hours and though I don't know these people personally.. good guess that they carefully considered the hours to be open.
  • Went by on Sunday and they were closed. Too bad. If you want to succeed you should be open on weekends when people are out walking around.
  • Will definitely be by to try a cookie or two. Thanks for the pics!
  • veets: i understand the hours they've selected, but it also seems that nearly every old time bakery in park slope is now closed, and i think part of that might be due to the fact that they don't evolve and change with the neighborhood. part of that change might include staying open later.

hey, if they can make a great business and close at 5:30 and not open sunday, more power to them.
  • Belzjm.. You make a good point.

When I moved here 30 years ago it was "sleepy village" after 6pm. People worked their 8 hours and came home. Now, people who are lucky enough to have a job work more hours to keep it, come home later.
Hey.. even the pet store on 9th street is open till 8pm to accomodate people's changing shopping habits.
  • Fan-f*#in-tastic brownies! I'm happy this place isn't on my way to work. I'd get real fat, real fast. I felt like a little kid when i went. next time I'm going to ask if i can get a cup of milk to dip my cookie in.
  • They close at 5:30 and aren't open on Sundays? How are they going to stay in business????
  • Thanks folks, I'll pass this on to Pete. As with all Brooklyn-based shops, your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Currently the hours of operation are focused on commercial production and delivery. Regular store hours/days and other matters should be ironed-out by Grand Opening this fall. Stay tuned.
  • do they make bread as well?

I think they definitely need longer weekday hours and possibly sunday hours as well. I bet they will do most of their business on Saturday, Sunday, and between 5pm and 7pm on weekdays.
At least, that's the way it was when my father ran his store.

could probably even get away with closing for an hour mid-day to give themselves a break.

When I was over last, Pete pointed out that Regina's original brick ovens are still there. Plans for brick oven use are in the future. I think there's some paperwork tying up the lines, so not sure when.

What kind of biz did your father own? Was it here in the Slope?
  • I have a confession to make - I walked past this place (on the opposite side of the street) and thought it was a dog bakery (little buddy...biscuits...). I'm glad to hear it is for humans and will be by for one of those peanut peanut butter cookies I spy in the picture! They look so good~
  • yarn monkey:

you might think about sending this info along to brownstoner. they will do a nice write up on the place before it opens and give it some good publicity.

    same goes with eater.com
  • Thanks Belzjim, will do. I guess I've become the defacto LBBC rep. I'm not a biz partenr, just an old friend. Usually i push yarn-related stuff, but I'll gladly accept pastries for payment.
  • For full disclosure, I know Pete too....

But i wanted to let all ya'll know that Little Buddy takes catering orders. We ordered 5 dozen mini cupcakes for a birthday party a couple weeks ago, and they rocked.

I tried the ice cream last week and was impressed by the quality.
  • anything vegan? i will be happy to give them my recipes for cherry-almond cookies or pistachio-rosewater ma'amoul if they will bake them in bulk for me. :D i live two blocks away, so i would totally be in there scarfing up goodies all the time.
  • I know that Pete is into vegan baking, but i'm not sure what he bakes regularly to sell in the shop

I thought this, too. I was going to take Oscar there for his birthday!

    I thought the same.
I guess if you are dog person and consider your pet your "buddy" that is your association with the name.
