SPINNING in BROOKLYN (at Crunch)
I'm at the end of my rope and hoping that my post will find its way to the ears of my co-riders at the Park Slope Crunch.
I am an avid spinner. I love the spin classes at Crunch and the instructors. However, several of the riders in Nathalie's Saturday and Sunday AM classes and Rob's Friday AM class consistently vocalize their enjoyment and excitement during the class to the point of distraction and frankly rudeness. It's driving me CRAZY!
I have nothing personally against these individuals although I find it surprising that it does not occur to them that they are sharing space with other people who may not want to hear their incessant moaning and chanting. I kind of liken it to having a conversation during a movie.
Spin is hard and many people require concentration. We all experience it in our own way but it is just rude and thoughtless to assume that other people want to hear your constant screaming, chanting and often lewd sounding vocalizations.
I know there is some story about a man at Equinox who actually got so frustrated at hearing someone's screams that he actually threw something at the person during the class. So obviously I'm not the only one this bothers (although I have no intention of resorting to his tactics). As a matter of fact I know several people from Crunch who no longer take these classes because they can't stand listening to these people.
I've written to Crunch Corporate and suggested they put up a friendly and funny sign in the class suggesting that people keep their outbursts to a minimum -- NO RESPONSE. I've spoken to the club manager TWICE and he said he spoke to the instructors - NO CHANGE. I have to believe the people who are doing this just don't realize how negatively it is effecting the experience of others around them - and if they did, perhaps they would be happy to tone it down.
I know - I sound like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill - but I promise you I'm not the only one this bothers. I pay a lot for my gym membership and can only work out at certain times. Why should I have to avoid classes because of a few people who are ruining it for the rest of us???
If you are a "vocalizer" and are reading this -- please, please, please, STOP!

There's a couple guys who go way overboard in the weight room, too.
Not only do they scream to the point of total ridiculousness and irritaiton, but they also drop 100 pound dumbells at the end of their sets so hard the floor shakes.
One of the personal trainers approached them and wanred them about dropping the weights because "the stores downstairs were complaining" about the loud thuds.
Antoher time two guys got into a disagreement about the use of a bench (one guys wanted it, another said "i'm using it right now" when he arguably wasn't *right at that second*), and one of the guiys went and got that tall white guy who is a slaes rep (I don't think he's the managert but he seems senior to the others). Anyway, he came up to officaiate the disagreement and was very even tempered, given how immautre the two "dudes" were acting.
I am surprised management never did ahything about the spinning psychos. I would say keep pushing the issue, and maybe bring some other people who are also annoyed next time. -

This is a problem at every gym. I've started doing weight training and am a girl... so it's kind of funny to be surrounded by all of these dudes who are trying to lift weights that are way too heavy for them and are trying out their soprano voices. I did have one situation where there was this guy who was spazzing with everything he lifted. He was "lifting" this one barbell and practically wrenching his entire back to do a basic curl type movement while also being very close to me and I was convinced he was going to smack me with the barbell.
Not only do they scream to the point of total ridiculousness and irritaiton, but they also drop 100 pound dumbells at the end of their sets so hard the floor shakes.
I am tempted to go up to the screamers though and say something like "Don't you know that screaming actually slows muscle growth?" Wonder what would happen then?

I see those guys quite often. Sometimes they distract me from my sets.

Subject: gym sounds
Just to play devil's advocate...it IS a gym, you go there to lift weights, sweat, etc. It is NOTHING like talking during a movie. Those guys (who I will grant you are totally annoying) are the same sort who used gyms before they were fashionable. It's not like you would go to Gleason's and complain about guys being loud. Personally I hate it too, but some of these people are training, really hard, for something and the sounds really are not able to be controlled. I have to disagree with all of you, loud grunts etc are perfectly acceptable, at least when it comes to free weights. spinning is another matter, especially now in the summer when you could easily be racing. -
ie....it's akin to sweating. if i had a great dislike of B.O. would I be justified in requesting that people stop sweating?

um, you could request deodorant. -
Just to clarify, I don't think any of us are talking about grunting. I grunt, I sweat like a pig, etc. I, personally, am talking about screaming/shouting and throwing weights around because they can't control their movements, which I don't think is really safe for themselves or people trying to use the weights around them. The guys I've seen doing this do not appear to be professionals. The guys that I see that are professionals do not scream or throw their weights around.

To sum - Grunting is fine/expected/we're cool. Screaming and wildly flailing with weights is not cool/a little scary/ahhh don't whack me with that barbell! Ya know?
I'm waiting for someone to post saying they have a "vocalizer" in their yoga class.

I've been training since I was 16 and I'm, well... older now (heh).
Was it "fashionable" in 1989? Does that have anything to do with courtesy? No.
People like that were always viewed as inconsiderate, far back as I can remember. -
yeah, I know, I basically agree with you, just need to play devil's advocate and have a bit of a knee jerk defensive reaction toward people who blur the line between appropriate behavior and just simply things that annoy them. just because something is annoying doesn't mean it is inappropriate. and the movie theater analogy is terrible, a conversation keeps you from hearing the conversation you all came to hear. not the same.

See Park Slope board's version of this thread for that one:

Ahh.. yeah, I actually didn't say anything about a movie theater analogy. Not the same. Disrupts focus, but still... gyms are not quiet and I am not trying to listen to dialogue. Annoying, thus I feel it is my duty to mock them at least a tiny bit.

Awesome! Ha! Thanks for the link.
Oaaawwwwwm!!! -
Funny thing at all gyms is that 9 times out of 10 the guy who is being really loud while lifting is usually short, like 5" 7' and under. They are just over compensating. When guys get really annoying in the weight room I just use the nautilus machines in the cardio area but only when that horrible DJ isn't playing.
-
ha... there's a DJ at crunch? that sucks.
-
Yah he plays really lazy shit like Lady Ga Ga. That along with the skanks that trot back and forth from the pole dancing class makes the place feel like a strip club sometimes.

To the OP:
It’s been over a year since I went to the classes you cite here, but in the past when I have, I’ve enjoyed them tremendously precisely because of the enthusiasm of the class! Each instructor’s class has a different vibe, and I wonder if perhaps Rob and Nathalie’s classes aren’t for you. These instructor’s classes seem to attract a lot of people who get more out of their workout if they whoop a bit here and there. There are other instructors whose classes are quieter and may be more “serious” – these may be more up your street.
I do a lot of eye rolling about Crunch – there are some classes and instructors that I love, but sometimes it annoys the hell out of me! I just don’t have high expectations for getting the perfect experience every time. I’ve learnt which classes/instructors work for me, and I try to get to those. I’ve stopped going to a number of classes as after a while the other participants just made me too fed up or angry. Trying to get them to change would be an impossible task.
I’m sure most people can only work out at certain times and I agree that it’s incredibly annoying to have a good, eagerly anticipated workout “wrecked” by something like this, but I think you’re fighting a losing battle here.
Sorry… -
LOL!
This thread is hilarious. I read and laugh , read and laugh. I'm just imagining the screaming and grunting -haaaa! Can't help myself.
Um...tell them nicely to shut the fuck up. Or join in and go crazy. Holler " Sweet baby Jesus -OOoh! Feel the burn!! I feel it ! You feel it?? I FEEEEEL IT!! Yeah baby!! I'm burning those doughnuts , burning those eggo's , burning that milk shake that I knew I shouldn't have had ! I feel guilty about this burn cuz it feels so good!! Ooooh!!!!"
Or wear an ipod on full blast. Sing loud and proud...an inappropriate song that will annoy them like this one :
(Excuse the booty shots in the beginning. I couldn't find this version without that .) -
That's why I own my own Schwinn Spinner bike and free weights, to avoid the "undesirables" at the gym.
-
Just start singing, America the Beautiful when they start saying, "You go girl!"

Nailed it on both counts.
That pole dancing shit is just so tripe and uncalled for.
Howdy, Stranger!
