Brooklyn Dog Show for Mutts
I'm throwing this idea out there to see what kind of response it gets but I have been toying with this idea for some time...
I never understood why there was never a dog show for mutts. Considering that "mixed breed" is the most popular in New York City, I believe these mixes (which thankfully represent peoples desire to adopt shelter dogs) should have there own show!
I would like to do this as a charity event with the proceeds going to the ASPCA (and other smaller groups who foster animals). But I also see this as a BIG event (hopefully anyway) with lots of dogs, press coverage, etc. Maybe at Prospect Park? I would also like some of the dogs to be up for adoption so they might perhaps charm themselves into a home.
The way I see this going down is something like this- the dogs "compete" based on weight groups in groups of ten with the winner of that group determined by audience applause. The goal is not to have a "winner" but to have an even disbursement of dogs represented. Also, I would like this to be an all day event, so that people can come and go as they please. I would have volunteers collecting money for those who want to donate to the cause. Also, local pet businesses could have product stands, and local foster agencies could bring/"show" animals up for adoption.
If anyone would like to help, or has any other input/questions please let me know. Right now this is just an idea, but who wouldn't want The First Annual Brooklyn Mutt Show?

Who are you callin' a mutt?

Ain't we all just mutts anyway?
I love this idea! If they can have publicity for the Ugliest Dog contest, I think they can have a Brooklyn Mutts Dog Show. Most interesting combination (tired of Labradoodles and cockapoos), dumbest pet trick (GET LETTERMAN HERE) and fastest on the obstacle course - - -
I like the idea of themed categories! Like... dog who looks most like it's owner? Or softest ears? "And the best sweaty smile award goes to..."
And for the humans we have... funniest nicknames for your dog?
Haha. I must make this happen. -
I volunteer to judge the "softest ears" category!
-
this is a great idea!

i know two dogs that want to compete. -
i'm in! well, i mean, my dog is.
great idea! -
I don't have a dog but I'd love to go!

SO - Where? When? Entry fees? Sponsors? Who is leading the charge - I can help!
-
well well, looks like this little dream might have wings

I suppose that's me... As I said, this is just an idea right now, but I was hoping for either October at the latest or next summer. As far as entry fees and all that... if it is at a venue like Prospect Park, I hope not to have them. Maybe I can solicit some really cute kids to run around taking donations? It really all depends on what venue I land. As much as Prospect Park makes the most sense, the last time I contacted them (about filming a movie in a woodsy section of the park, away from most park-goers) their rates were really expensive! Something like 10K a day if I remember correctly.
I was told that FIDO does an event at McCarren Park that is a dog show with the dogs dressed in costumes. I am going to contact them and hope to get a sense of how to BEGIN to plan this. I have many ideas, a few contacts and NO experience in event planning. Help. -
If you do the event in 2010 you might get some sponsorship money from the Census believe it or not. Contact the dog food companies and local pet and vet shops. How about a Brooklyn Katz Show too? Meow!

Not sure of the first place to start. I think if the proceeds of the event go to charity, the larger pet oriented corporations might get involved (Petco, Iams, etc.) I googled "getting sponsorships for charitable pet events" and PetCo has an Event Sponsorships site!
Thank you for your interest in partnering with PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. PETCO is proud to be an active participant in animal-related events and fundraisers in the communities we serve.
What You Should Know About Submitting A Sponsorship to PETCO
PETCO is one of the most recognizable pet specialty retailers in the industry. The sponsorships selected must be compatible with the PETCO brand. As such, we only consider pet-related sponsorship opportunities. These events are mainly directed to pet parents and enthusiasts.
The regional marketing offices control their respective sponsorship budgets. Thus, sponsorships that are regional or local in nature should be directed to the appropriate Regional Marketing Coordinator.
Please note: If your sponsorship is purely charitable and related to animals (i.e. benefiting a pet-related non-profit organization) or you are requesting a grant, please contact the PETCO Foundation.
The BK Borough Pres office is always happy to hope on a publicity bandwagon - might be a start there as well.
The ASPCA might get on board too if there was an opportunity for adoptions on site. -
Wow, that is incredibly helpful. I will certainly check it out. Thank you so much!

Subject: Pet Show in Brooklyn for Mixed Breeds
What a great idea! (I'm so proud of having grown up in Brooklyn.) I wish you much luck with this! It's a super idea, worthy of a great response. I now live in VÅ and can't help you, but I urge Brooklynites to start this ball running. It could be the start of something big for dog lovers everywhere.

Definitely contact FIDO; they have the experience to help a lot. You also need to decide what is the point of the "show," charity? owner education? K9 health? PR for a particular point? This makes it easier to explain what you want to do.
There are many people in Brooklyn with experience in putting on dog activities of all sorts, so you don't have to re-invent the wheel. If you want more help please contact me off-list. -
Like, what if my dog isn't technically a mutt, but is a really really REALLY poor example of her breed - by AKC standards?? Could there be a category for all of the rescued full breeds who are AKC deficient?

I would vote YEA on that one! My dalmatian was a rescue - and but for the spots, she did not look like a typical dalmatian. She looked more like a short black lab that had a bad bleach experience.
-
rescues in, 3,000 dollar purebreds out.
-
"Cutest AKC Defect" category~
My rescue JRT is a shoo-in with her one ear up and one ear down! -
deformities do not get your dog points, they get you points!

I think Fido and the Good Dog Foundation are doing this sort of thing soon near the park. I've been to a Good Dog Fashion show at the PPW nursing home and it was cute. From an email that Good Dog Therapy teams got:
"On Saturday September 12, 2009 THE GOOD DOG FOUNDATION will be presenting an outdoor dog show for residents of the Prospect Park West Senior Residence and the neighboring community.
We at The Good Dog Foundation are inviting local dogs within the FIDO network here in Brooklyn and their owners to participate as well to make this event a really memorable one. If you aren't already familiar with FIDO (Fellowship in the Interest of Dogs and their Owners) and their mission, please check out their website: www.fidobrooklyn.org
What we’ll be doing at this dog show:
Contestants from FIDO will go up against Good Dog Therapy teams on the “cat” walk. Residents from PPW Senior Residence will judge the dogs and reward “Best in Show”, with a face-off between FIDO dogs and Good Dog Dogs! Other prizes will be dolled out for “Most Charming”, “Friendliest”, and “Best Dressed.” (Costumes are of course optional).
Date: Saturday September 12 (Raindate: TBD)
Time: 12:00pm"
