Brooklyn Dog Show for Mutts — Brooklynian

Brooklyn Dog Show for Mutts

I'm throwing this idea out there to see what kind of response it gets but I have been toying with this idea for some time...

I never understood why there was never a dog show for mutts. Considering that "mixed breed" is the most popular in New York City, I believe these mixes (which thankfully represent peoples desire to adopt shelter dogs) should have there own show!

I would like to do this as a charity event with the proceeds going to the ASPCA (and other smaller groups who foster animals). But I also see this as a BIG event (hopefully anyway) with lots of dogs, press coverage, etc. Maybe at Prospect Park? I would also like some of the dogs to be up for adoption so they might perhaps charm themselves into a home.

The way I see this going down is something like this- the dogs "compete" based on weight groups in groups of ten with the winner of that group determined by audience applause. The goal is not to have a "winner" but to have an even disbursement of dogs represented. Also, I would like this to be an all day event, so that people can come and go as they please. I would have volunteers collecting money for those who want to donate to the cause. Also, local pet businesses could have product stands, and local foster agencies could bring/"show" animals up for adoption.

If anyone would like to help, or has any other input/questions please let me know. Right now this is just an idea, but who wouldn't want The First Annual Brooklyn Mutt Show?

  • When I lived near McCarren park, BARC used to do a really fun mutt/ adopted animal show (the pets dressed up and strutted their stuff, it was possibly the cutest thing ever.) I couldn't find any posts on their site about an up coming one. This sounds like a really fun idea! Let me know if you need help! Also, if anyone knows of a shelter like BARC where you can stop by and walk the dogs near Windsor Terrace or South Park Slope, please let me know!! I miss walking dogs after work!!!

Maybe check with Sean Casey Animal Rescue. I think they have a location near you. You might have to do some sort of orientation or training before they'll let you walk, but I think that is much better than BARC's policy of just letting anyone in to walk (I witnessed some bad results of this there once.)
  • The BARC parade was fun & fun should be the point of it. There are plenty of venues where mix-breed (All-American) dogs can strut their stuff in performance. Last Saturday & Sunday there were two days of agility trials (jumps, tunnels, A-frame climb, etc.) on Staten Island with some really fantastic mixed breeds. (see www.sicdtc.info)
Contact FIDO in Brooklyn for a possible Prospect Park venue. They have a lot of experience in putting on dog events. Rather than the ASPCA which has an advertising budget, suppoort the city's Center for Animal Care & Control. They are perennially strapped for cash & volunteers and MUST take any dog surrenderd to them.
