mod note: edited to reflect removal of earlier post
Actually, I do. When someone hangs around the front door "w/o any idea" who they are looking for. Regardless of color, creed, height, hair, etc. Only fools believe bad things only are committed by people who don't look like them.
  • "Everyone reported seeing him" and you saw him hanging around, and yet you are afraid to say what he looks like. Well, at least we know it's a he.
At least the race baiters won this, as they threw down the race card when you refused to say what the "alleged perp" looked like.
Guess we all lose these days.
  • If you got back and read my reason for not giving out his description in the first place you will see that I am not "afraid" to post it. I cannot be sure it was this person. We have no cameras and its not be proven. Could have just been an odd coincidence. What if I put up his description and it turns out he had nothing to do with it? Then this guy has to walk around with people thinking he was responsible. The point of the post was to remind people to not buzz strangers into your building.

Again, go back and read. The race card was thrown down after a few of us said we dont buzz in strangers and tend to ask people why they are hanging around. And if you continued on, you would see it's quite common to turn people away from the building regardless of race.

This has nothing to do with race and everything to do with personal safety.
  • I dont understand why everything has to turn into a race debate on these boards. Isnt this supposed to be a community message board? You annouce a stoop sale, bitch about bad service at some restaurant....etc
I think warning people that there have been break-ins falls into that category and if you go back and look at Local Native's post you will see I am not the only one concerned about it in the 16th st/Windsor area. I fail to see how telling people there was theft in my building makes me a racist.
  • I think there is a heavy preponderance of liberals (such as myself) on these boards. Unfortunately, some are so anxious to prove their liberal credentials that they jump on any opportunity to scold others for perceived illiberalism, such as racism.

Other times less liberal posters scold the liberals for their perceived liberal bias, accusing them of seeing racism under every rock and behind every door.

Racism is bad. Very bad. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, right?
  • Unless you're Hillary Clinton, I suppose.
  • prospectheightsyo wrote: I always buzz in strangers, people should lock their front doors and take responsibility for their own security.
thats not very cool thats how alot of jerks get it bad things happen to other pepole.
  • with the race thing is mostly white guilt and some people take advantage of it. i don't give a damn. people are people. race is just another descriptive of narrowing down the person.
  • prospectheightsyo wrote: Do you know every single person who lives in your building? Do you buzz in delivery guys, UPS people? When you screen these strangers and they tell you theyre staying with a friend or living in a certain room do you even turn them away if you dont recognize them?

I'm not worried about being jumped in my building. my life is not crippled with fear, sorry.
I don't know how long you've been living in prospect (yo), but push-in robberies happen all the time here.

Once you've had your turn you won't act so naive.

I don't know everyone in my building, don't buzz in delivery guys, or UPS people. Those people should either be buzzing the apartment they are delivering to, or leave at the front door. You have no responsibility to let those people into your building.

I definitely turn strangers away from my building -- anyone with common sense and street smarts would. Why would you rather compromise the building security than simply tell a stranger no? Are you afraid of saying no to a stranger? Sounds like you are the one paralyzed by fear, being to scared to stand up for yourself.

A couple weeks ago someone buzzed my apartment. Instead of just buzzing the person in, I stepped into the lobby to see who it was. Some asian guy was standing there, I opened the door to see what he wanted. He said he was delivering to an apartment upstairs. I asked him why he didn't buzz the apartment he was delivering to (what a retard). He said "oh i think i have the wrong building, i think i'm supposed to deliver next door." And he left.

I don't think he was necessarily up to no good, but there was no reason for me to let him in. If the person he's visiting/delivering to isn't home to let him in it doesn't make sense for me to let him in.
  • You can add another to the "robberies on 16th st." list.

My apartment on 16th St. between 8th ave and PPW was burgled yesterday (8/24) between 9:30am and 3pm. We're on the 3rd floor and have no idea how they got in. The window to the fire escape was closed and latched and there was no damage to the locks. However, we had a sticky top deadbolt, so we hadn't been locking it. Only the lower bolt was latched. We changed all our locks today.

They took all small things, ipods, cameras, jewelry, cash...Oddly, they left my laptop. The cops who took the report said there had recently been another burglary last week on the first floor of the building next door. Be careful.
  • that sucks, greensneakers! and it's extra creepy that there was no sign of forced entry. at least "small things" can be replaced (physically, anyway), and no one was hurt. must update rental insurance . . .
  • Thats pretty scary, greensneakers. Its also the reason that even my super doesn't have my keys (they'll drill the doorknob out if they need to get in but i'd rather that then someone having copies of keys to my apartment!) I'm glad you and yours are ok.
  • Greensneakers, thanks a lot for posting. I called my roommate and had her hang a reminder in our building to be sure to lock up and not let anyone in the building.

I cant believe they pulled off 2 daylight burglaries with no signs of forced entry. Its infuriating.

  • GSBDON, thank you so much for posting that!

I am a little embarassed to ask but who should I call and what should I say?
  • Commanding Officer
    Deputy Inspector Jesus R. Pintos
    (718) 965-6311

A few of us should make some calls (squeaky wheel gets the grease). There are definitely things that can be done besides taking a report. As far as what to say, simply "I am a resident of the block and concerned about recent events" and, as per your previous posts, you might have useful information that even you don't realize. Let them decipher it and make an assessment. Also a phone call to the Community Council Prez wouldn't hurt as she will relay that also to the Pct.

  • It took me a whole year to get my landlord on Prospect Ave to fix the front door so that it locked...I only got him to do this with the help of one of the detectives who came by after one of the many robberies on my block.
