trash/filth/7th ave
Hi-- new to message boards. I'm always appalled at how filthy 7th ave is and that none of the shopkeepers ever sweep--except for a deli at Garfield and Tutta Pasta. I once tried contacting the community board to see if I could do something but ... didn't get very far. Is there anything addressing this that I'm not aware of-- or that i could volunteer for?

Subject: Some ideas
Start with the very image-driven boro president, Marty Markowitz.
Write a letter to the sanitation commissioner ... check nyc.gov ...
fyi his press flack is one Vito Turso - a good guy - maybe get to him ...
state assemblyman brennan always sends mailings that gunk up my mail box -check in there .. he puts his name on some of the fancier garbage cans ...
community bd six is also on the net, as well as the park slope civic council.
there's a start.
they don't call the 'hood pork slob for nothing.....
7th ave garbage is ongoing problem.
too many slobs and never just enough garbage cans. -
Subject: "pork slob"--hee yar!
thanks so much for all the leads! going into shops and trying to tell them 'cleaning is a good idea' just is not cutting it... -
people are slobs in nyc in general. but in some places the shop keepers would push the garbage onto the streets from the side walks and it looks better but doesnt slove the problem. 7ave shop keepers seem very lazy lol.

I find 7th Ave to be practically pristine compared to the garbage strewn 5th Ave. On a windy day the trash practically rolls down the street like tumbleweeds.

It's a shame that people don't have any regard for the environment in which they live.
I've been known (on numerous occasions) to shame people who throw litter in front of me......on the trains, etc. I usually start by very loudly saying "You dropped something" and staring at them until they pick it up.
I'm also the one saying "You're welcome" very loudy if I hold the door and they didn't say "Thank you". If they look confused I say "Ooops. I thought I heard you say "thank you"".

Ugh, that bothers me too. Happens all the time here in my office where we have to go through two doors to enter the main office space, the second one needing a person to swipe a card to unlock the door. Is it so difficult for people to say "thank you?"

Try my approach. It usually works..........and if it doesn't, it will at least make you laugh

Had to go back and edit my post as it made no sense as written. It's the decongestants for my allergies. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

*walks by and dumps more garbage on the slope!
I actually like the shaming idea. but i'm too much of a coward to say anything lol. problem with throwing garbage away is not enough street cans and alot of them are already full! -

Or they disappear. The one on my corner is often missing. Who on earth would steal a filthy sidewalk garbage can?!?

7th Ave is filthy in the south slope. It makes me want to move to the suburbs, and I hate the suburbs. My own street is vile. Just walking two blocks from my house to the park, the things I've seen lying on the sidewalk have included used condoms, dead rats, dead mice, dead giant roaches, stained underwear and other discarded clothing, used tampons, and of course dog poop, always. -

guys there is a bright side to this trash!!! its part of the urban landscape!
come on the bags in tree's are cool! they are way mucho cooler than say lights and other ornaments!
the tumble weed of garbage gives character to the area. the rats and mice. wild life and food for stray cats . -
Isn't there a merchant association you can bring this up to? Im sure these merchants are paying dues and sometimes a portion is used for clean up and beautification. Downtown Alliance in Manhattan really is a fine example of a good merchants association.

Here is a radical idea:
Why don't you take your roommate, friend, spouse, and, or, kid out on a Sunday morning with gloves, a broom, plastic bags and one of those pinchy things and clean up one side of a block. It will clean it up for a few hours, shame the merchants who are too busy (lazy) to clean up, and maybe discourage a low-life from throwing something on the ground. If a few families did this one weekend we could really clean up the place.
I have not done anything like this myself on 5th or 7th Avenue, but I have done it on my block. It is fun. I should follow my own advice and do it on 5th Ave (which I live near). -
i think the home owners besides the store owners should do this too. clean up the side walks. this way they'll help with their property values and looks of th eplace.

We do this in front of our building in hopes that others on the block will follow suit. On the whole, it seems like residents on my block ARE starting to take a little better care of the place, which is nice... Hell, two of the back yards being used as dumpsters on my block (both of which are visible from my living room) are in the process of being cleaned up! Exciting times we are living in...

The Park Slope Civic Association is very hot on trash these days. They are working on an initiative to get more trash pick-ups happening throughout the neighborhood. You should consider joining the org and getting involved if you are concerned with this issue. The organization could use more new blood too: http://www.parkslopeciviccouncil.org/

It's a good idea in theory, but my husband and I work hard all week to pay our high rent...the last thing we want to do on the weekends is clean up trash after park slope shopkeepers! Weekends are the one time we get to relax, go to a museum, visit galleries, go to the park--do the stuff that we live in NYC for. Maybe if we were a little younger...although I'm sure my grandmother would be out there sweeping the sidewalk.
Howdy, Stranger!
