What are you planting this fall? — Brooklynian

What are you planting this fall?

This southern girl that grew up at least two planting zones away is still at a loss about what to grow here.

I finally have outdoor space here and I want to know what works. I've noticed that pansies, which is what we planted as it got cooler (sept/oct/nov) and thrived through the winter, are a spring plant up here.

Mums? Do most of the stores/nurseries have them in stock yet?

  • Well, Opossum, I haven't been to a nursery lately so I can't help you there, but I have seen some mums blooming recently. I don't know if you do edibles as well as flowers, but I just planted beets and lettuce, spinach etc. Garlic will go in closer to first frost.

In the spring, I tranplanted some asters (New England variety, fall flower perennial) and they are already blooming.
  • Made it to Home Depot today and they had mums galore! All sizes and a decent mix of colors, but probably not all varieties that are common.

They also had lots of perennials (that I guess it's time to plant) and some of the prices looked good to me. It made me wish I knew I were going to be in one spot for a while or owned our place so I could plant all kinds of lovelies.
