Game Stop- 5Ave 13St. Robbed at Gun Point — Brooklynian

Game Stop- 5Ave 13St. Robbed at Gun Point

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Last night- at approx. 8PM. three black males with fire arms held hostage both employees and customers for approximately 10 minutes. Enough time to make out with merchandise and cash.

Thankfully no one was physically injured. Although among those customers was a young boy- around 13?.

Just a heads up for those in the neighborhood.

  • Wow. I'm glad everyone is okay. I was just in there not too long ago right at closing.
  • Wow, crazy. I hope the folks who work there are doing okay. Mentally/emotionally, that is. And that poor kid...
  • A man was held up at gunpoint last night by 3 assailants around 11:30 pm on 3rd street between 7th and 8th avenue

scarey stuff, hope everyone at GameStop was ok
  • The boy was 13 yrs old but my lil brother was there too and hes only 7 years old. I wish those ppl get caught because now my little brother is going to be scarred with images with a gun pointing at him.
  • I'm shocked that someone hasn't accused the OP of being a racist because he/she mentioned that the perps were black.
  • jack - not a racist! just stating the facts so people can be aware of what to look for.
  • Im Sure if the perps were white, he would of said 3 white males, or if they were of any other race, he would of mentioned it.

So, I should watch out for black people?
  • here comes the pc police!!!! run for it guys!
  • Gotta love Pat! (He appreciates beer-money sent through Paypal)
  • Living very close by, I think, oh god. But I googled "gunpoint gamestop" to find out more, and instead it showed news articles about GameStops being held up all around the country. In mentioning it to my boyfriend, he retold a story of a friend who was almost held up outside of a Walmart, who realized it was because the kids were watching him purchase video game merchandise in the store and wanted it. So, to make myself feel better at least, I wonder if it's not a group who is simply going around randomly robbing stores or on a crime spree, but that video game stores in particular are targeted often because the perps actually want the stuff, regardless of the value.

Either way, if anyone has more information on this incident, please share. Glad no one was hurt.
  • Gamestops do get held up a lot for the merchandise. Even the 7th Ave/Garfield store has been robbed a few times. Still, armed robbery is bad news in a neighborhood, period.
  • I was held up at gunpoint late last night on 5th ave at 22nd st. Again, two or three dudes. Not a great way to end the night. Everyone be careful

Yeah, its pretty dark and quiet over there late at night, 22nd and beyond along the cemetery. Sorry dude! What time out of curiosity?
  • Im sorry, I should have flashed my 'I'm a person of color' badge before addressing someone as black. :sarcasm:

I was raised here, before the hype & sensitivities.

    Forgive my lack of empathy.

    Stay safe people.
  • I'm wondering, since i'm new to the area, do a lot of the nighttime muggings stop during the winter? I know crime's usually up in the summer.
  • yes, plus overall crime is down this year over 8% in the 78 pct which serves Park Slope. See the attached below. So the deal is, with blogs like this one, you are hearing about more stuff, but in actuality, the crime rate is falling and has been falling lockstep with the rest of the City over the last 10 years.

  • It's true. The holdup at GameStop did happen and they ran off with approximately $10,0000 between merchandise and cash. I was also told that other stores have been hit on 5th Avenue but the Press wants to stay hush about it because they don't want to tarnish Park Slope's name. Give me a break...I was born here 45 years ago and Park Slope on 5th Avenue was crap with people standing on corners slumped over on herroin, liquor or on some other drug . Prostitution on 3rd Avenue was a problem. There were guys on corners drinking to the wee hours of the night, drunks and dirty old guys hitting on young girls who walked by, people putting stereo systems on the windows for everyone to hear - not to mention the cars with systems blasting their music while driving through the neighborhood, gang fights too. Let me make one thing clear: the neighborhood was a mixed bag of races (whites, blacks, hispanics and other ethnicities), so there were bad apples in all of them. Sometimes shots could be heard at night. Fourth Avenue was no better either. On 4th Avenue and Douglass was a gang of homeless dogs who'd roam the streets. They'd have some serious dogs fights and the A.S.P.C.A. would drive around to round them up but there would be more to replace them. Sixth Avenue was decent and so was 7th, but the rest of Park Slope - ha ha..at the time you wouldn't want people to know you lived in Park Slope. Prospect Park had alot of muggings, especially around Prospect Park West...vandalism on cars was a norm. Even a girl was killed and chopped up into pieces in the neighborhood. So if someone happens to be sitting on a stoop yapping or some kids are playing at night, that's music to my ears compared to what I lived through back in the 70's and 80's!!!
  • I am very out of touch with gaming and looked up how much these games and consoles go for. I feel naive for even asking why they would rob a Gamestop now.
  • All I have to say to Wanda's 1st post here (and it is a lot to say in one word).AMEN.

Without changing my name to "long-time whatever" I lived through those years and brought up a family in PS during those decades and whatever one can complain about now is nothing compared to then.

A little modifier to my all out Amen, there....

It is a shame that any business gets robbed no matter what decade we are talking about but if it is true that if the press has somehow been instructed to keep such reports quite to keep the real estate value up in the hood i that is outrageous.

every time there's any crime, an old timer pops up saying "you have nothing to complain about b/c this or that area was shit in the 70s"

how exactly does argument make sense? just b/c you suffered serious crime in the past doesn't mean that the current "lighter" crime is better

i'd still rather NOT get mugged, or robbed, no matter how much the area has improved in the past 30 years
  • It is very relevant to the probability of getting mugged or robbed. It is much less likely today than it was 30+ years ago, when some of us "old timers" (picture Gabby Hayes!...) moved to the Slope.
  • I wonder if because most of the customers at Gamestop are teenagers, they tend to pay in $.

    ,,,just a thought.

    Not a career plan.

I really don't see how what you get out of my posting is that it is ok to get mugged.

I am not looking to argue.. I just don't get it.
  • I'm actually a gamestop employee. Those same people have hit up 5 stores in the last two weeks (they hit up ave j in brooklyn, kings highway and a few others), all ten minutes to closing time whcih is eight o clock. they hold guns to everyones face, they make everyone (customers included) go to the back of the store while they clear out the stock room and wait for the safe to open up.

there has been no one hurt yet in any of these robberies, and thats a good thing.

my advice is.. don't go to a gamestop at the last half hour!
  • Honestly, ever since the one on 7th Avenue was robbed so many times at night, I don't go to GameStop after dark, period. Didn't think about the cash aspect, good point there

Thanks for the information. Do the robberies always happen in the last half hour or are you just sick of dealing with me when you're getting ready to go home? :?

Either way, glad you're not hurt.

Because back then men were men and did not cry like babies about getting stabbed in the knee or shot in the arm. To survive you had to be Maximus the Gladiator AND walk 10 miles to school in the snow. You kids need to toughen up. :bigsmurf:
