  • I was thinking something more like this:

Whynot, you can do that, right?
  • Carnivore wrote: I would like to add a wing onto my apartment. I think it can be cantilevered out from the side of my building. When do you think you can get started on that, whynot?
I'd like a wing on my apartment too. Some might call this wing a "bedroom" but I would prefer to call it servants quarters for the servants that I will acquire when I become a rich and famous celebrity stylist. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST, BROOKLYNIAN!
  • VoodooNYC wrote: Damn it! I need to get you started on the refinishing project you and I discussed before you get to be too much in demand.
When this project/thread is finished, bring them buy...

Falling Waters cantilever jobs will only be done for those living above the first floor; otherwise it looks like, well, a deck. The Jacuzzi, on the other hand, might violate a few coop rules.
  • I'm emailing you with a project too. :-)

Listen you , forget all the rest and get to making Carnivore's BFF quarter. K?
  • Here ya go, Flo. Fun with Electrical tape:

    image
  • Not the kind of fun with electrical tape I'm used to in the bedroom, but I like it. And it's exactly the kind of decorating I can afford. Thanks Ms. Beaverhausen
  • ya know that Beave only had electrical tape in the bedroom to silence the screams :-)
  • Flexichick wrote: ya know that Beave only had electrical tape in the bedroom to silence the screams :-)
there can be screams of pleasure.

    Thanks for the testimonial.
  • Dude: "Quick, before it rains again, post Episode 3"
    Whynot: "ok"

Episode 3: Fun with Lumber Begins!

Today's trip to Lowes involved purchasing 10 lbs of concrete mix, three 1"x4"x8' and a 2" x 4" x 8". The total came to $17.32. (grand total is now $20.32)

The lumber is pictured below (Dude is shamelessly included to appease my dog loving readership) in my workroom (painted in honor of the Simpsons). ...yes, those are model train tracks on the ceiling.

    image

Today's tools includes a miter saw and a few screws, and a rough frame for yesterday's "excellent hole" was created.

The rough frame will be used to hold the molding and "good frame" to be built later.

Using a chisel and hammer (along with Pink Floyd music), finishing touches were also put on the excellent hole so it could fit the rough frame.

Note, this frame will be invisible once the "good frame and molding" is in place. Everything is much less scary now... click for the full picture

    Here's today's mess ...not bad!

Make sure to tune back in on Monday for exciting Episode #4: Repairing interior walls with concrete and building the "floor".

Who do you think I'm building this attic for? Carnivore's BFF: Em.
  • my dad mounted a model train track along the upper wall in my parents' living room, but your dog is much cuter than theirs, so when i decide to have my own train installed i think i'll have you handle it. don't tell him.

    LOL!

Attic? I thought you were expanding your closet space , yo?

Anyway , nope , it's still Carnivore. Surprisingly he hasn't messed up yet. If he does, I already promised that spot to BigGuy , tho.

  • I have a secret weapon to trounce both Carnie and Big Guy, I will woo you... just you wait

Oooh no...Dude , please don't waste your time and money.

Are you really advising a man who is in the process of spending 30 hours and $100, while blogging about it, "not to waste his time and money"?

silly, foolish Em. ....just you wait.

your secret is safe with me.

Note to self: Meet Vidro's partner. Avoid Merrith's partner.
  • Greetings, and welcome to Episode #4:

"Fun with lumber, concrete and spackle!"

Today's tools included: vises, saws, and hammers
    image

    they also included:
a level, measuring tape, screws, and -most importantly- chocolate chips and peanut butter (jelly and bread not pictured)
    image

    Today's accomplishments:
The "pipe side" of the closet attic obtained a wall made of lumber, and the plaster board that used to be the drop ceiling:
    image

This involved dealing with walls created by Beavis and Butthead's esteemed great uncles: Larry, Curley and Moe. http://paulstallard.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/3-stooges.jpg

Note the curve of this wall! ...the lumber is straight
    image

In honor of Larry, Curly and Moe, I joined the esteemed Mougar and Carnivore for a mid-day ride around the park.

I then fixed the minor damage caused to the closet interior in Episode #1. Here it is what it looked like before it received this afternoon's spackle and frame.
    image

...and now post spackle and interior frame:
    image

So, in conclusion, the concrete and spackle will dry overnight, and the attic floor now has supports that are level and ready for the floor boards. The supports have been designed to hold lots of heavy crap.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for exciting Episode #5:
"Painting everything inside the closet white".

No work will occur on Wednesday as a result of a JOB INTERVIEW that relates to my two masters degrees!

But tune in in Thursday for Episode #6:
"Installing floor boards and reassembling the lower closet"

On Friday, Episode #7 will feature:
"A trip to Lowes for door lumber and molding"

Work will begin again after the long weekend on Tuesday.

    Episode #8 will feature:
"Creating a door with a Router and glue"

Episode #9 on Wednesday: "Molding Fun with the miter saw, and painting"

...and then (everyone's favorite) the Thursday's finale, Episode #10: "Hanging the door"
  • What's with the night vision shots?

    Oh wait...

    THE SCANDAL!!!

    image

  • It does kinda look like a boob. ...but maybe I'm just lonely.

I was hoping for an outline of a famous religious figure, but so far haven't had any luck.

P.S. I also learned that the little lightning bolt (aka flash) shouldn't be disabled.
  • Greetings fans, and welcome to a special mid-day Episode! (Episode #5)

Due to the excellent weather, both Dude and Whynot have decided that this afternoon is better spent outside. Fear not, today's episode is as worth reading as ever (?!).

Because Monday night is trash night in PH, the late night walk is often very exciting. ...Last night was no exception.

Once again, (to the undelight of Mrs. Whynot) Dude and Whynot's late night walk lead to the discovery of ....wait for it....

    DISCARDED LUMBER!

Three pieces of solid, 1" thick x 41" planks for the closet attic floor. (remember to click for the full shot)

    image

Today (cue the Godfather tone of voice), I introduced my three new "finds" to "my little friend":

    image

Here's a "just after the violence" action shot:

    image

I then quickly laid them to rest in their permanent resting place:

    image

The floor/ceiling is level, but I've decided to leave one of the prior ceiling support boards as a tribute to the last "woodworkers" (?) who were in the space (The aforementioned larry, curely and moe).

By looking at the gap between the prior support board and the new ceilings (photo below, look at the top left), you can see the excellent angle of the prior dropped ceiling. An incline of about 2" over a mere 40" run...

    image

Yes, the new floor/ceiling is level.

    But is it strong?
A fine question. One, I chose to answer by climbing into the "new" space, and then posting the following evidence: A photo of some stranger's foot.

...I promise, there is no photoshop in the whynot household!

    image

...while you folks are at work, Dude and I will be at park. Bye now.

  • It's looking great ,Whynot.
  • Whynot--is it possible you've been working in the wrong field and position? Have tools, will travel kind-of-thing?

...my current field is sorta that way. (I then PM'd Flo)
  • Speaking of current "fields"...

You, sir, shall make a fortune on this project.
