Invasion of the Traffic Cops

Does anyone know why there are NYPD traffic cops all over the Slope? From Union & PPW to 15th Street & 7th Ave I've seen two traffic cops on each corner hanging around not doing anything. Is there a parade or something? VIP? Kennedy's going by Air Force One to Arlington, right, not by the Hamilton Ave entrance to the Belt Parkway West?

I actually noticed a lot of them out this morning (at around 8am) on my route between 9th and 5th and GAP. I saw at least 4 or 5 writing tickets.

Are they really traffic cops? With at least two gun point hold ups over the last several days in the Slope, perhaps the police want a show of force out?

The yellow rain slickers and cars/vans say NYPD Traffic. I'm wondering if it's for the Michael Jackson bash tomorrow in Prospect Park. Although I've never seen this many cops so early of an event.

I believe our mayor, with the blessings of our borough president is having us pick up the tab. In fact, Markowitz is making MJ's b-day some official Brooklyn Recognizes kind of day.
