Dist 39 CITY COUNCIL RACE general discussion

Subject: MERGED: The City Council race: general discussion

Josh is a progressive Democrat who believes we need a more transparent and equitable government. He has served as President of Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats and as Field Director for Democracy for New York City to ensure that average citizens have a voice in city government. Josh is the only candidate who has never taken developer money, because he believes we need autonomy in the City Council so that communities can have true input in shaping their future. Josh wants to create more affordable housing, green jobs, and an education system that increase parental control and teaches rather than tests.

Josh has been endorsed by Assemblynember Jim Brennan, State Senator Eric Adams, former Congressman Major Owens, former Governor and DNC Chair Howard Dean, Civil Rights Attorney Norman Siegel, District Leader Jake Gold, District Leader Lori Knipel, District Leader Jesse Hamilton, and community leaders such as Daniel Goldstein, Judy Hoffman, Candace Carponter, Chris Owens, and Jack Carroll.

Organizations and unions like Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID), Democracy for NYC (DFNYC), Joint Council 16, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, IUOE Local 891, Teamsters Local 237, New York Metro Area Postal Union, APWU, AFL-CIO and many more, all support Josh.

  • Great.

    1. Bother me on my commute with your petitions.
    2. Stop me on the street to "chat" when I'm running to the grocery store.
    3. Knock on my door at dinner time.
    4. Spam the neighborhood message board.

Gotta love the city council candidates. Just like I'll never order food from a place that slides a menu under my door....
  • Great....

I watched the video, kinda. Josh seems real, hardworking and perhaps even nice.

Dave, you seem like a total (redacted).

    MOD NOTE: NO NAME CALLING.
  • Skaller is an (redacted). Vote for Zuckerman.

That is the nicest thing you've said in months on this board. And congrats for no misspellings! Keep up the great posting.

    MOD NOTE: NO NAME CALLING.
  • What do other folks think, Brad Lander v David Pechefsky v Josh Skaller?

And as for campaigning, how the hell else are the candidates going to let us know who they are? I dislike excessive mailings (like the mayor, JEEZ) but going to the subway and walking the neighborhood seems like the right thing to do . . .

    in other news
    MOD NOTE: NO NAME CALLING.
And "you seem like a . . . " isn't an appropriate way around the very very simple rules of this site.
  • Get away from me.
  • Skaller is a grass-roots candidate supported by Democracy for America. Having Gov. Dean's endorsement is damn impressive. You're worried what school he sends his son to? I'm impressed he was against Atlantic Yards before that became popular.

    The Dean endorsement

So do you like the fact that Josh's wife (and the mother of their school-age child) is an educator who has worked in public schools all around Brooklyn? :!: :!: Are you interested in learning more about Josh?

I wish there was a better way to discuss these matters. Josh has not been accused of any heinous crime. He has made a personal decision with his wife, who has obviously demonstrated more commitment to public education than any other candidates. Does it bother anyone that the other campaigns are turning a personal issue into a campaign smear? That bothers me more.

I am so impressed with Josh and his campaign. I really like the fact that he's got the only campaign that hasn't taken a dime from developers. He's run a real grassroots campaign, talking to and focusing on the people in the district.

Oh, and I should mention that my respect and friendship with Josh go back a few years. I am an active member of Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, and the club was horribly divided when I joined. But then Josh was elected president, and during his term, the club transformed into an effective organization that was nice to be part of (not to say that it's not got its share of oddballs!).

I just wish people would refrain from judging candidates and even elected officials on tiny scraps of information. The Democratic primary in the 39th has a great field of candidates, and this is the rare race to talk about why to vote FOR someone instead of against them.
  • But does he believe in gun rights and non-socialized medicine?
  • A note to the Skaller campaign:

This is why you don't post an unsolicited video on a message board.
Check out the progression of this thread. I complained about the excessive campaigning of you and your fellow candidates and then I'm attacked for being a (redacted). Next a Huffington fan steps in a fires a shot across your bow on the "sending your kid to a private school" story.

People argue both sides of the story, call me a (redacted) and the thread quickly has 500 views. The you run the risk of this being picked up by one of the local blogs (FIPS, Gothamist, etc.) and soon the Time's City Room blog picks up the story or maybe incorporates it in a larger story about online campaigning. After that you are guaranteed that the Post and Daily News will grab the story and rewrite in their own special, chock full o' typos style.

Maybe I'm wrong but ask the band that may or may not have kicked a puppy or our friends at MIH Ventures about their BBQ plans for '10.
  • Anybody else find it odd to have the city hall "secret slush fund" tacked on the end of the video? That mini-scandal hit a longtime ago, and I didn't think it was such a honkin deal then - just a budget marker. Of course a council office is going to have descretionary funds, and of course where that $$ goes needs to be easily accessed public information.

Gotham Gazette on the basics wrote: Five Democrats are vying for the party's nomination to replace de Blasio, who is vacating his seat to run for public advocate. Leading the pack in contributions and endorsements are Brad Lander, the director of the Pratt Center for Community Development; Josh Skaller, a leader of grassroots political and neighborhood organizations; and Bob Zuckerman, who runs environmental nonprofits. Rounding out the Democratic field are John Heyer, a licensed funeral director and special assistant to Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and Gary Reilly, an attorney with a background in environmental and land use law.

Although the district is overwhelmingly Democratic, it features that rarest of all elections in New York City politics: a Republican primary. George Smith has the Conservative and Republican Party endorsements, but faces a challenge for the GOP line from corporate strategist Joe Nardiello, who likens himself to Teddy Roosevelt. David Pechefsky, the Green Party candidate, wants to break what he calls the Democrats' monopoly on power in the general election on Nov. 3. Libertarian Roger Sarrabo is also running.

sorta like a meet my new kid vote for me ad

I like his furniture - is that Craftsman or Arts & Craft or Mission style?
  • I met Josh and I liked him enough to consider voting for him. I do have to say that I was a bit turned off by his last campaign mailer. It was the typcal political sales job, but one part that bothered me was his promise to end the Bloomberg administration practice of (to use the Skaller campaign's term) "aggressive" ticketing of illegally parked cars. I understand the need to pander, but is the illegal parking block that big and powerful? He also, in the mailng, promised to find "alternative sources of revenue." Can he be more specific? Will my taxes go up?

di Blasio said more or less the same thing during Sunday's Public Advocate debate. Big crowd pleaser I guess, which I don't go for either, unless there's something going on about alt side double parking ticketing. And I don't even have a car anymore...

I've been hearing strongly positive things from people who know Brad Lander -- two of my friends worked with him at JFREJ (Jews For Racial and Economic Justice) and say he's a real mensch. Josh Skaller has some similar positives, like the support of DDDB folks and Eric of Park Slope Neighbors. So far, it's a toss up between those two for me.
  • I shant be voting I think. The last city council member I voted for was Peter Cammarano.

I agree city council candidates talking about education is like a mayoral candidates talking about what changes they are going to make at the MTA. In the end they have little control and little influence

  • I've been getting visits from both Lander and Skaller canvassers. I am completely undecided. Each of them is claiming Howard Dean and the same types of organizations as endorsers, so this seems a very close comparison. It'll be interesting to see who the papers endorse.

For me it's coming down to which canvasser is cuter, and the Lander chick is winning so far. There are so many similar qualities that it seems as valid a qualification as flipping a coin.
  • I’m supporting Skaller. He won’t take money from big developers, so he has no obligation to them. He’s been endorsed by people I know and respect, some very public figures like Norm Siegel and Howard Dean, and some people I’ve come to know and respect through neighborhood activities, such as Jack Carroll and Judy Hoffman.
I am a special education teacher with over thirty years of teaching experience in
early childhood, elementary, and adult education. I currently teach in public school, but have also taught in private school, a state hospital and in a rehabilitation agency.
I believe it is ridiculous that anyone has made an issue of where Josh sends his son to school. Have they picked on Obama for sending his daughters to Sidwell Friends ?
Where a candidate sends his own child to school does NOT reflect his stand on public education. By the same token, just because one of Josh’s opponents sends his child to public school doesn’t prove anything either way. It is entirely possible that the opponent has a friendship with the principal, or that because of community connections, feels confident that he can get the best program for his child within each grade. Unfortunately, I’ve seen things like this happening in public schools more than once.
I am confident that as a councilman, Josh will be concerned with the educational needs of all public school students, those in general education, those with special needs, those who are academically gifted, those who are middle class, those who live in poverty, and the handful of lucky ones who are rich.
I say this as a teacher, a mother, a concerned citizen, as someone who has been concerned with politics since the civil rights days of the sixties, and as someone who loves my hometown of New York. I base my opinion on what Josh has said, who else is supporting him, and on how he has answered my questions.
  • I don't like the fact that the Skaller campaign is paying people to canvas for them. Lander's campaign workers are all volunteers. To me, it doesn't matter where either of them send their kids to school. That is a personal decision. I think both have good ideas and are good guys. I am voting for Lander with great enthusiasm.
  • Actually, a volunteer for Skaller told me the exact opposite: that Skaller's canvassers are all volunteers and that Lander's are all paid.

I believe what she told me.
