SPINNING in BROOKLYN (at Crunch) — Brooklynian

SPINNING in BROOKLYN (at Crunch)

I'm at the end of my rope and hoping that my post will find its way to the ears of my co-riders at the Park Slope Crunch.

I am an avid spinner. I love the spin classes at Crunch and the instructors. However, several of the riders in Nathalie's Saturday and Sunday AM classes and Rob's Friday AM class consistently vocalize their enjoyment and excitement during the class to the point of distraction and frankly rudeness. It's driving me CRAZY!

I have nothing personally against these individuals although I find it surprising that it does not occur to them that they are sharing space with other people who may not want to hear their incessant moaning and chanting. I kind of liken it to having a conversation during a movie.

Spin is hard and many people require concentration. We all experience it in our own way but it is just rude and thoughtless to assume that other people want to hear your constant screaming, chanting and often lewd sounding vocalizations.

I know there is some story about a man at Equinox who actually got so frustrated at hearing someone's screams that he actually threw something at the person during the class. So obviously I'm not the only one this bothers (although I have no intention of resorting to his tactics). As a matter of fact I know several people from Crunch who no longer take these classes because they can't stand listening to these people.

I've written to Crunch Corporate and suggested they put up a friendly and funny sign in the class suggesting that people keep their outbursts to a minimum -- NO RESPONSE. I've spoken to the club manager TWICE and he said he spoke to the instructors - NO CHANGE. I have to believe the people who are doing this just don't realize how negatively it is effecting the experience of others around them - and if they did, perhaps they would be happy to tone it down.

I know - I sound like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill - but I promise you I'm not the only one this bothers. I pay a lot for my gym membership and can only work out at certain times. Why should I have to avoid classes because of a few people who are ruining it for the rest of us???

If you are a "vocalizer" and are reading this -- please, please, please, STOP!

  • Same shit happens at the NYSC spin classes on Saturdays. But they are the instructor's sycophants so nothing happens.
  • In my old gym there was a guy who made these above mentioned lewd sounding moans all the time, and loudly as well. Some girl asked him "did you come yet?" and he never did it again.
  • This is probably a sign that OP should skip the spin classes and come on our midnight bike rides instead. We have a strict "no grunting" policy (although light conversation is permitted).

    that's awesome!
  • Worse in yoga classes. A few of us complained, the instructor made blanket statements about "quieting your breath," and he continued his OOOOAWWWMING. These men are just trying so much harder than the rest of us. Notice them! Please!
    I left that class.

He never came again? Tragic, but perhaps well-deserved.
  • Good luck with this and you have my sympathy. I used to love spinning classes but the screaming and affected grunts literally drove me away.

I have a European friend who believes that Americans don't know how to act in public spaces. Perhaps it's because most of us don't go to church or temple and aren't used to being silent or conscious of the rights of others. Right now, I see more people using their cell phones in inappropriate places or being incredibly rude.

Apparently, the cell phone battles got pretty intense in the UK and they began designating "no cell phone" zones. Some European trains have windows which block cell phone usage.

I think I am re-quoting it because I really think this IS the solution.. verbalizing it to the person, during class... and yes.. that takes guts and indeed the person never did come again... that is even better.
