Just wondering what peoples experience with the various car services in Park Slope are. Which ones do you think are the best?

you might want to look at these threads - even on the PH board, many of the places mentioned are in PS anyway

a bad experience, and related info

    p.s.
I like Eleventh St Car Service very very much
  • I like Eastern. They are reliable, the car shows up promptly -- I can't think of any bad experiences with them.

I used to use Continental but they suck -- rude dispatcher, they would always say the car was coming in 5 minutes even if that wasn't remotely true, sometimes the car never showed up. After I got in a screaming argument with their dispatcher, who called me a liar when I said the car never came (before he checked and realized he'd sent the car to the wrong address), I decided not to ever use them again.
  • Rose is 100% right. We used Continental for a couple of years (mostly bc it was the only one that was programmed into my phone book) before finally getting fed up with that horrible dispatcher, cars that wouldn't show up, and dirty cars. We tried Eastern and found them to be super-fast, professional, and >gasp< NICE! Imagine that.
  • I've had very good experiences with Arecibo. They come fast, know where they were going, and the drivers are pretty polite. I would recommend them.
  • I've been using eastern for about 20 years and I've never had any problems. Most cabs won't come pick me up when I'm in a "bad" neighborhood late at night but eastern has never let me down. I also use Castle car service when needed.

Eastern gets my vote too. I just wish taxi drivers didn't keep those gross air-freshener/Christmas tree things hanging in the car. How nasty! Instant headache and car sickness

I use both Eastern and Evelyn and have had positive experiences with them. "IV"
  • I have lived here since 1997, and have used nothing but Arecibo on 5th Avenue since 2002. They are always on-time, clean, courteous and fast, in all kinds of weather.
  • arecibo. hands down
i just wish they had more cars

    cheers is also good
but the drama from the place
    can be, not so great

    eastern is good too

What do these companies charge within the Slope?

Eastern used to be $5, now it's $6.

    They show up super-fast.

eastern is really good for going to the airport
i've used them both for going to, and returning from the airport

    they've been reliable on both

So, how much does arecibo charge for getting around w/in the Slope?
  • arecibo, for me the average is $7.00
    plus 2$ tip
if he shares a really good story, then it's $3

i just passed by there and saw a big white paper sign on their window
that they're gonna be closed on monday so as to participate in the
    parade in the city.

    the mayday parade

so don't plan on using arecibo on monday

Sweet. I like them even more now!
  • As some of you have noticed, I added an actual poll to the top of this thread (using my new modly powers). If you haven't voted yet, please vote above!
  • Legends is my current pick.

They seem organized, give fairly realistic forecasting arrival times, and have solid clean cars. Dispatchers are clear and thorough, none of that crosstalk with radios blaring...
  • Subject: Arecibo = the worst, why? Horns.

Eastern is the best service (cars that do not smell like smoke, nice drivers, on time), continental has gone waaay downhill, I used to use legends until I got a smoke-filled car and a drunk driver on the way to JFK for an early morning flight. And Arecibo always has cars available on 5th in front of the storefront...

    However

Arecibo's drivers honk, always, any time of day or night, and at the instant they pull up to the door. Which means, even if you are waiting at the front, they will still honk at 1:00 AM. Which is not only annoying, but annoying, too. And a third thing, it's annoying. So please do not use them and give your neighbors some peace and quiet.

I called Arecibo and asked them (politely) to stop their cars from honking but they hung up on me. I have also asked the drivers to stop honking and they have rolled up their windows, flicked me off, or sworn at me.
  • everytime i've used EvelynS for a pick up on park pl. they have never been more than a couple of minutes.

    pros - quick
    cons - appearance and smell

the only other service i've used is cheers and they are just the opposite. i actually stopped using them b/c they took a little longer.

    pros - appearance and smell
    cons - not quick

    MY VOTE IS IN...
  • INTERNATIONAL should be on the list...
  • I'm not a car service damn it :p. lol i dont mind the free advert :p. i'm a cargo hauling service sorta !!!
  • Arecibo. no doubt. no matter where you are or when you call...."5 minutes"
    love it.
