Looks like a scam to me...US Energy
I'm very suspicious. A man came to the door with a ID badge claiming to represent US Energy, and asked to see a recent Con Ed bill to make sure that my energy costs were not fluctuating. It didn't make sense and I'd never heard of this energy company, so I refused to show him my bill or let him in. I'm sure he's ringing other bells in the neighborhood, so I wanted to share my suspicions. I feel that I have seen something like this previously in this blog.

Almost certainly a scam - there's been reports of people being slammed over to a new power company without their consent, based on the information they copy off of the bill. Sounds like the same bunch back under a new name - just google IDT Energy, or see past articles.

He does probably work for US Energy, and you do get power, the scam is in the fine print.
You get a low rate for a few months, and then it goes up much higher than Con Ed. I've also heard of them signing you up without your consent and forging signatures.
There's plenty on the internet about them and IDT Energy. -

Subject: scam?
you should probably just throw lots of money at him.
better safe than sorry. -

I got duped by these people. Or, rather, my EX-roomate did when I wasn't there and the bill was in my name. Needless to say I was less than thrilled.
All was fine and dandy for a few months and then the price per kilowatt literally doubled. I then went through hell switching it back to Con Ed and they wanted to charge me $150 to do so. Since I wasn't there when they switched me and it was done under dishonest terms I fought it and they switched it without the fee. But still, a pain in the butt (and 2 very large electric bills) that I really could have done without.
Besides, some random person comes to your door and asks to see your electric bill, a bill with your name, address, and account number on it? Common sense would tell me not to give a stranger this information, no matter what their badge says. -

Also, it was US Energy that I dealt with. Horrible company.

We just moved out of Bed Stuy, but when we were there they came to our house over and over, sometimes as much as three times a month (I work from home). We asked them to stop, and they wouldn't. I even stood in my door saying, "No, no, no." over and over while the guy persisted. "You want to actually pay more for your energy?" he asked. "Yes!" I said. Eventually I just had to shut the door on them.

They tried this with me in Windsor Terrace. Super pushy. I said "which part of "NO" was not clear? I give you three seconds to get the fuck off of my property". No more visits :-)

I always just tell them I don't deal with the power, and they tend to leave us alone.
Howdy, Stranger!
