City policy re: pets in the event of an emergency-N.O again?
http://www.nydailynews.com//front/story/420246p-354749c.html
Mayor Bloomberg seems to be taking a relatively hostile tone regarding pets in the event of a major disaster, and the city policy on animals at shelters seems on one hand sensible and on the other ridiculously unrealistic (Animals ok as long as you have a cage, food and proof of shots - what is the likelihood you'll have all that if a sudden natural or man-made disaster occurs)
Seems like alot of people wont evacuate due to pets, just like in New Orleans.
Thoughts?

I think it's kind of stupid, but I'll be adding my pet's vaccination documentation to the emergency bag. Though I'd think his city registration tag would cover that.
It's the having a cage that's pretty dumb. I'd hope that simply having appropriate leashes would sufice for the larger animals. -

A bill was just passed to include animals in emergency disaster evacuations, I don't see anything specific about leashes v. cages...seems like a good way for bloomberg to undermine the spirit of the bill.
----
The bill, which passed 349-24, would require state and local preparedness offices to take into account pet owners, household pets and service animals when drawing up evacuation plans.
Offices that fail to do so would not qualify for grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Republican Rep. Christopher Shays of Connecticut, with Lantos a co-chairman of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus, said estimates are that some 600,000 animals died or were left without shelter as a result of Hurricane Katrina. He added that the lack of pet rescue plans also put many pet owners in danger.
"When asked to choose between abandoning their pets or their personal safety, many pet owners chose to risk their lives," he said.
The Humane Society of the United States cited a recent Zogby International poll that found that 49 percent of adults say they would refuse to evacuate if they couldn't take their pets with them. -
i ain't leaving my dog behind

you guys who staying with your pets, when the big hurricane hits nyc. can i have your stuff when you guys are gone?
-
I'm not worried about the hurricane - I live high enough that I wont flood unless it is literally the end of the world - but I am worried about the small Al Queda nuke that will be coming one day....

more chances a hurricane would come than a nuke

True but only speaking selfishly here - Where I live isnt really prone to flooding (check the NYC.gov site for your location), hurricane's come with a long warning and I got a car, and finally unlike New Orleans - NY City isnt protected by levies, so if we flood, it wont be for weeks.
BUT
a terrorist w/ a nuke (or dirty nuke) will hit suddenly w/ no warning, a car will be useless in the panic and rush to get out and finally the danger will remain for a very longtime.
That being said, I am more concerned with whether people think the cities policy is a good one or just creating a potential N.O all over again. -

I don't know, I was just reading an article about katrina, about a woman on the 7th floor of a hospital who died. If things start to break down, we're all vulnerable living in NYC--very dependent on services and transit and all that. If everyone hops in their car at once...but there's not really any point worrying about it. Gotta get on with things. Anyway, I've had my cat for 12 years and I would never leave her behind. No way! It's hard enough leaving her to go to work...yes, i know i have problems.

I happen to think it is a great idea because I know I would not go anywhere without my two little kitties. I can understand the cage idea - at least for the cats and maybe even smaller animals (who might get trampled) plus the cage can sit on your lap leaving a space open for another person and their animal.
I have become friends with a woman who lost pretty much everything in NO and she gave me a piece of advice in addition to keeping a survival pack in the home. Keep plenty of matches near your rooftop along with flares in a leakproof box. If it wasn't for a neighbor having flares they would have missed a whole block of people who were on their roofs.
