Worst corners/blocks in Park Slope RANT
I am a grumpy old man today. Don’t hold the train because your fat girlfriend can’t get up the steps in time; Don’t hold conversations with people when you’re on the treadmill (tip: if you’re talking about how much you loved Julie and Julia you’re not moving fast enough); and Don’t sit on other people's stoops and talk on your cellphone...Seriously. If you want to help pay my rent you can take a load off and bitch about how your boss doesn’t know what she’s doing.
Now that I've established by cranky credentials I want to know what the worst corners/blocks are in PS.
I'll get us started.
18th street between 6th and 7th avenues
I lived across the school there for 3 years and every night kids would be in the school’s courtyard, playing baseball till midnight. Imagine hearing an aluminum bat hitting a ball, screaming, and a bat dinging on the pavement every 30 seconds. Add to this the clown who would wash his car every weekend with the stereo pumping bass so hard my windows rattled … it made me want to firebomb the street.
The corner of 7th Avenue and 12th street
What is the deal on this block? People always hanging out on their stoops, kids screaming in the street, shady types hanging on the corner eyeballing everyone. Every time I walk by I think "Man, I'm glad I don't live here.”
The corner of 5th and 5th
That poor deli. I went in there one night and the owners were trying to get three punks to leave because they were just sitting on the ice-cream case texting their friends and swearing. They ended up just hanging outside and being even louder and ruder.
This is my new favorite: the basketball/handball/skate park behind the Old Stone House.
I walked by last night and it was like a war zone with skaters banging their boards, basketballers swearing at each other, and just the usual teenage craziness. Must be peaceful to come home to every night.
Living above C-Town on 9th Street
Do you love delivery trucks at 7am? How about ratty-ass delivery vans cranking shit music all afternoon? Like the sporadic sound of metal carts hitting cement poles? Then this is the place for you!
That's my rant. Flame away or add your own corners of irritation. And before some clown says: That's life in the city. I know it's life in the city but it doesn't mean I have to cuddle with it. Sometimes I just like to bitch. If nothing else this might be a more interesting topic than “Where can I get eyeglasses?” Answer: google it. Or “What happened to CNN?” Answer: google it.
As I said, grumpy today.

I am feeling cheerful about living in PS. Have no grumps.

I know. I hate those boring old fogey "where can i find an electrician who can also inspect my vagina?" posts.
But seriously, park slope can't be that bad? Prospect Heights will still be blasting Michael Jackson at all hours for years to come. -
Agreed on 7th Ave & 12th St! They were especially rowdy last night! Why are they always hanging out on the corner??
They bring out the Worry Wart in me. One kid was SITTING in the street last night with another kid climbing all over him. Those livery cabs whip up the block so fast it makes me nervous they will get hit!
I think thats just a matter of a lot of families with kids close in age living on one block. When I was a kid we had that situation on my parents block and there would be about 10 of us in the street at a time. Looking back now, there was probably some woman worrying one of us would be run over!
How about the area right outside Union Market on 7th?? The sidewalk is so narrow because the store front comes out so far and people constantly stop there to adjust something on their strollers, chat with one another or tie up their dog RIGHT outside. Its so hard to pass. -
oh my god
you live in park slope
GET OVER IT -
The corner of 7th Avenue and 12th street
oh my god. people are enjoying their block. call the cops.

the basketball playing and skateboarding in the BASKETBALL AND SKATEBOARDING PARK is outta control, yall!

Heeeeeeeeelloooooo - part of living in Park Slope is the unquestionable entitlement to complaining about the everyday man!

the very idea of a discussion of the "worst corners in park slope" is hilarious.
i love how the complaints are not about crime or drug dealers, but about the families that live there. -

Still a lot of MJ being played over there? I feel like its dying out by Windsor Terrace. Guess Prospect Heights is taking it harder than most.

if you want boring, move to westchester.
-
Ah it only took eleven posts for the "Move to Westchester" response. Well played, BrooklynGiGCenter, well played.
When I say "worst" I'm being relative. The worst corner in PS is not going to look like the worst corner in East New York. -
You obviously haven't lived here for that long. The spots you mention have been that way for decades. Shame on you if you move to a block without doing some research...I remember when every other block was like 18th street!
-
Sorry, but there's something really hilarious about someone who's username is "Local Native" and who begins their post with "You obviously haven't lived here for that long." I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I do get a kick out of it.
Actually, I get a kick out of this whole thread. It's like everyone's just being over-the-top caricatures of various types of Brookylnian posters. Bravo, everyone. Hopefully it doesn't devolve into some boring argument between two boring people who can't argue or type very well, as usually happens to promising threads here. -
A+ would read again.
-
The problem is clearly that there are still several dozen families in Park Slope that make less than a hundred grand. There must be something you can do about that. Oh noes, gentrification is not complete!!1!

Well, if that drunken dude hits this thread, I am sure someone can write that the worst corner is where Mr. Drunken is. That will be good for half a chuckle.

try greenwood rent is very cheap if you can find a open spot. best to bribe the grave engineer to get that spot. the place is definite very quiet. -

jersey isn't boring goto places like Newark or Elizabeth
. sleepless hot gun shot filled nights with sounds of sirens abound.
or jersey girls if you're into the thing. -
Somebody should mention Two Boots.
...and Boing Boing.
...and The Food Coop.
I'm just sayin'

Hey Patoralia.. watch it.. I grew up in East New York/ Brownsville.
The motto even back then was.. BROOKLYN... Where only the strong survive.
Howdy, Stranger!
