Neighbor shot dead at Union and Hicks tonight — Brooklynian

Neighbor shot dead at Union and Hicks tonight

A neighbor named Phil was shot dead tonight around 9:40pm. He was shot once in the arm and once in the head. His feet were in the street and his head was on the sidewalk so he may have been talking to someone in a car (he probably was not crossing the street as he was not at the street corner and there is no sidewalk across the street from where he was found - just a concrete barrier to the BQE).

He leaves an 8-year-old daughter and neighbors on edge.

reported as a suicide in the Bklyn Eagle
  • Yes, there was that rumor floating around when the police were there. He was 12 feet from his house on the corner, though. It seems odd that he would commit suicide outside instead of in his house (maybe he didn't want anyone to have to clean up?). It also seems odd that he would commit suicide by first shooting himself in the arm (but what do I know).
  • Apparently he was inside his own car, which makes a little more sense, and staying at his mom's house in the nabe. That's right down the block from the precinct house -- was he a cop?

So sad. Terrible thing to do to your 8-year-old . . .
  • My prayers go out to his family, his mom and his little child. How tragic.
  • Pitu, none of the "old-timer" Italians know he who is (which is surprising to them). He could have been an undercover cop, I suppose, but I've never heard that any of the cops are from the nabe.

Here's a comment from the 2nd link you provided:

"This is a bunch of Bull. He would have never done it to himself, someone must have ” Done ” it to him. Cops need to seek them out."

I have to say that something doesn't "smell" right here. I (we all) saw where the body was lying that night and it was on the ground, not in the car (the car was next to him - I couldn't tell how close because it was dark and we were kept across the street by police tape). Also, from what I could tell, he was on the passenger's side of the car (not the driver's side where you would expect him to be if he was by himself). The CSI-types arrived much later while I was there and I would think, if the body had been in the car, the police would wait for them before moving it to the road/sidewalk. Also, why was he shot in the arm if he was committing suicide? Very odd.

I do feel terrible for his family and daughter.
