"Before moving to New York, I spent six best-years-of-my-life in Montreal, a culturally rich Canadian metropolis just 370 miles to the north of us. There’s so many things to miss about the city -- if you haven’t been there, go -- but thankfully, a fellow expat is bringing a part of the city to ...."
MOD note: pls don't paste whole articles - a paragraph and a link is the way to go. Thx

yummmm....poutine!!!
where, exactly, on hoyt will i find this canadian yumminess? -
You remind me that it's been way too long since I've been to Montreal. When I lived in Boston in my 20s, a bunch of us would head up there about every 6 weeks. I knew we were probably going too frequently when the bouncer at our favorite Montreal bar saw us, smiled and said happily, "Welcome, Danielle!" ;-)
Time to go back... -
I think it's Hoyt near Atlantic...
DDA- if you like poutine you have to check out Sheep Station on 4th Ave and Douglass. Best poutine I ever had (even in Montreal). The head chef is a Montreal native. It's fucking fantastic. -
Well, looks like my plans of relaxing and doing nothing this weekend now include heading up to Sheep Station for some poutine. AWESOME!!!
Thank you, Pastoralia! -
Sheep Station is a great place to just eat and drink a day away. Hopefully a cool bartender is working. Last time I went the chick behind the bar was clueless.
-
From what I've heard and experienced, they have many clueless people behind the bar.
I went once and I will never go back. We were starving and I tried for a number of minutes to get the bartender's attention to order food (there were only 2 or 3 people at the bar - none of them needing help). When he finally acknowledged us, I started to order and he said, "Wait a minute," and then proceeded to wash all of his glasses for about 5 minutes. He then sauntered over to ask me what I wanted. Instead of ordering food, I asked for the check.
I've heard similar stories from others, both friends and Brooklynian-ers. -

Danielle had one bad experience @Sheep Station and posts about it at every opportunity. Most of the feedback here has been very positive on the place - search the board if you like, it's a local fave.I hate to see a good place slagged like that, so I'll say it again: I've been numerous times and love the place. The food is good! More often than not, the service is good. I like that bartender with the beard - he wears a cap usually, knows how to mix a drink and is just sweet as pie. Pastoralia, I totally know what you mean about that one hippy girl - she's not rude or anything, just not a good bartender.
Is the place on Smith St related to Sheep Stat? -
Oops, by Smith, I mean Hoyt.
-
Pitu - I have posted about my bad service experience at Sheep Station 2 or 3 times (not "at every opportunity"), but thanks for exaggerating. In fact, you don't exactly disagree with me - mentioning that "more often than not the service is good" which means sometimes it isn't . You also mention "the hippy girl" who is not a good bartender (again, bad service).
My post was about the service not the food and I will post it again if someone else raves about the place so that there is a balance of opinions about a restaurant. And, yes, I've searched this board and there are others who agree that the service there is not good (including, apparently - you).
Glad you like the restaurant, though - we should all eat where we want to and where we have had good food and/or service, don't you agree? -
Yeah. You appear to have it out for this place over one rather minor experience, and posted in a way that suggested The Crowd was with you on this. That's just not true.
To each his or her own. -
i like sheep station and haven't ever had noteworthy bad service there, but i also understand about how DONE with a place bad service on the first trip can make a person. there are at least two local restaurants that i just don't want to try again for that reason, even if others like them. (in the interest of bygones becoming bygones, i won't dredge either experience up again, but i did post about both at the time.)
it's a pity sheep station got ruined for you, danielle, because they have some damn tasty vittles. -

If someone posted something negative about a restaurant I liked, I would just disagree and say why I disagreed. Period. I wouldn't accuse them of "having it out" for the place which is rather an emotional response.
I said that I have friends who have had the same bad experience and I've read where some Brooklynians have not liked the service, as well. I never said anything about how "The Crowd" (your caps not mine) is with me.
Regardless, your comment doesn't invalidate mine (nor vice versa). And, no one (including you) on Brooklynian should try to suppress someone else from voicing their opinion about a restaurant by belittling someone's opinion or trying to invalidate it by saying that the person "has it out" for the place. My experience was my experience. It's just as valid as yours. -
Danielle, it was ONE experience AGES ago where you report a bartender ignoring you for five minutes. You appear to bear a grudge for this vast humiliation, this egregious breach of the ettiquette, this scarring experience that denies you forevermore the possibility of enjoying a lamb sandwich on 4th Ave. You can post about it all you want, but I'm probably going to make fun of you for doing so, or at least note my own more recent experiences.
It's a bar with way-better-than-bar food. Yeah them! -
FWIW:
Sheep Station is not related to this new restaurant other than through the fact that there is a Montreal connection.
The "hippy bartender" sucked but I haven't seen her lately. The guy with the beard is great.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. pitu, you should give them another chance. Order a poutine and drink up and see if you change your mind. I know I've been in the same boat and gave a place another try and was glad I did. -

Again, my experience is just as valid as yours.
With your manner in these posts (especially this one), I'm not sure why anyone would look to your for judgments about restaurants (or anything else for that matter).
You sound like a shill. -

Considering I'm one of the moderators of this site, and not in the restaurant business, I think you can be assured that I am not. Your reasons for revisting this are beyond my understanding -- ONE annoying experience and you can't let it go? How many years will you seethe when Sheep Station is mentioned? What else happened that you're not telling us that has embittered you so?
It's not as if we talk about the place very often, but I've noticed that you comment along the lines of "I went there once and left. It's horrible." every time it's mentioned - which is what I mean by "at every opportunity". This thread is your 4th posting to that effect, based on one experience where you left before you ordered food.
I have been there dozens of times, and I give my opinion based on those many pleasant visits. You had one bad day there, we've heard you. Nobody denies your experience. Are we done yet? -
sheep station was just written up in the latest saveur magazine for their burger! (p.79) YAY, sheep station!

omigod, sounds fabulous!

Did this place open yesterday?
-
Fairly closed to the opening:

Walked by this weekend...paper over the windows. Maybe waiting for the city inspectors which could take who knows how long?
-
wow, poutine, smoked meat and montreal-style bagels....
I've really missed those bagels since moving to NYC from up in VT. We had 1 guy who made them. He had learned by working for years in MTL, at St. Viateur, I think. But I do remember him saying something about the recipe not working in other climates, and how northern VT was about as south as you could go and have them come out well.
Anyways, I'm headed over to that area this evening for dinner, so hopefully it's open so I can pop in for a beer after. -
i walked by yesterday and it was still papered up; BUT, there was someone in there working...so, hopefully soon.
Also, it looked like there was a take-out window...or perhaps that was just wishful thinking *sigh*. -
Yeah, it was still papered up when i passed by tonite. Oh well, soon I hope.
-
I have since heard from the grapevine that it will be a December opening...don't know when, but December as of now.
...sweet poutine dreams...
(Just a funny little FYI aside...in France the person we know of as Vladimir Putin is called Vladimir Poutine. tee-hee). -
Slightly hilarious NYT City blog about this guy...he's never run a restaurant but he sure is good at getting press. I enjoyed the part where the reporter shows a picture of the product to Schwartz's in Montreal and they exclaim 'what the hell is that?'
Still, learning to slice meat against the grain is something the proprietor could learn to do...

Anyone know if it's open yet?
-
I walked by this morning and alas, it is still covered up. Hopefully soon...
In the meantime, the menu looks yummy - http://mileendbrooklyn.com/
...even if he apparently can't slice the meat right. -
Not til January it seems
