fyi--Slope landlord who promised apartment and then reneged
Hi, Folks-
Just wanted to give people the heads up about a landlord on 4th Street between 5th and 6th who promised me a garden apartment and then, after I'd rented out my existing place and made all the arrangements in reliance on her promise, reneged. I'm in California at the moment, planning my move back to Brooklyn, and the landlord was a family friend who called and offered the apartment. She asked me what it would take to make it work, I told her, and she agreed, but in the intervening time, proceeded to add all kinds of costly things and take away other things that had been promised. There was a lot of back and forth by email and really odd terms in a rider to the lease--not kosher, and when I balked and tried to talk to her about it, she got nasty and said she wouldn't rent to me.
I won't name names because I don't want to get sued, but it's the only garden apartment I know of for rent on that block and it's on Craigslist. So, just beware. She seems like a kind person, but from my experience, not so much. Now, I'm scrambling to find a place before the U-Haul leaves for NYC on the 25th, so if anyone knows of a decent place in or near the Slope for under $1900/mo that will accommodate an elderly dog (my incredibly sweet Lab whose back legs are too wobbly for more than a couple of stairs at this point), please do let me know. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about this. Its especially upseting since its a family friend. Garden apartment in park slope are rare and so are landlords willing to accept dogs. I hope you find something soon

Thanks for your good wishes, folks. I may have found something with an actual yard on 13th--not as ideal as 4th Street, but close. Of course, it's a couple hundred dollars more expensive, but it's also larger and has way more light and closet space, so probably better in the long run. Fingers crossed.

yep, that should be a lesson... verbal agreements are worth the paper they're written on

Fixed his post for him. ^_^

Okay, just deleted his post. Got sick of seeing spam on the site, even if it was initially funny to mess with it.
Howdy, Stranger!
