Best area for Brooklyn College student new to the area??

I'll be attending BC in the fall, and I'm not familiar with Brooklyn. I don't mind a commuting and I'm looking for a decently priced apartment in a safe neighborhood...just like everyone else. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Ditmas Park. Close enough you can ride a bike, but safe and cheap if you find the right place.
  • My fiance commutes to BC from Crown Heights. Takes him 20 - 30 minutes to get to campus, including the walk to the train. Based on rentometer, one beds in the neighborhood can go from $1000 - $1600.
  • Anywhere around the campus is fine, once you learn the neighborhood and the locals. My advice would be to stay near flatbush avenue 2/5 train. Its the closest train. Those trains are the fastest and most well running trains if and when you want to go to Manhattan, which is where many people tend to go to shop/do things. Otherwise, if you chose Ditmas park/ the Q train line , you will find yourself using the very slow Brooklyn buses to get where you want to go. Its also more of a hike to the avenue H Q train and you will be stuck shelling out money for cabs. Also there is just more shopping on the 2 line.
  • welcome to brooklyn, sm. as we say around here: once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
  • please dont move to crown heights or flatbush you yippies are already harrassing all the locals , move to ditmas park or midwood

Ditmas Park would be a commuting nightmare, and Midwood would be a terrible neighborhood for a college student- absolutely nothing going on there.

what exactly is wrong with midwood , its like any other area and is very safe and the commute to manhattan is 30 minutes..ditmas park is only 6 blocks the most from the q line , make sense stop trying to get yur uppies to invade flatbush and crown heights where the culture is rich and pure and refuses to be ruined

  • Yes move to Crown Heights, we have a very organized "Kill the fabulous and pure West Indian culture group. We are proselitizing and importing gay people and gay looking people, or just ordinary white people, or hell just anyone who is not west indian to dilute the purity, peace and general all round good feeling Christianity that pervades the entire neightborhood.

were hoping to have a child sacrifice, just like the one that started the original Crown heights riots and its going to be alot of fun!!!!

Seriously, I'ts a nice place with a great mix of people, and a few crazy, insecure jerks, just like anyplace else.
  • I would say anywhere which has the Q or 2 train, as well as the B-41 bus nearby. The Q is actually the quickest train to and from Manhattan as well as the popular spots in Brooklyn such as Park Slope/Prospect Heights and Brooklyn Heights/Downtown. The same with the B-41 which runs from Marine Park, which has decent housing the last time I looked, to downtown Brooklyn. Isn't BC opening up their dorms soon?
