where to buy good fresh fish?
hello all,
i'm going to be biking around the grand army plaza area today and i'm planning on cooking up some delicious fish for dinner. any suggestions where there's a good fish monger around? either a stand-alone fish market or a counter in a grocery store would be super helpful. anywhere biking distance to grand army plaza.
thanks a lot for your help,
laura

on saturdays, the fish place at the green market in gap is quite good. otherwise, the fish counter at sea-land, the green grocer on flatbush, is also good. i think there's also a very good one on 7th ave in the slope but i don't usually go there.

Do you happen to know the cross-streets of sea-land?
thanks!

I think Sea Land might be at 2nd or 3rd. If not, it's very near there an on the east (park) side of 7th.

322 Flatbush. Sea Land/Natural Land. Right by the Q/B stop.

I guess the fish shop on 7th I was thinking of is not Sea Land. I do not know the names of most markets around here

I think you're thinking of the one between 3rd & 4th streets on 7th, "Park Slope Seafood", 217 7th ave (smalltownbrooklyn.com to the rescue again). I've been shopping there and at SeaLand on Flatbush and I think I'm having slightly better luck with SeaLand but the jury's still out.
The other one on 7th is at the corner of 3rd Street, I never shop in there because it smells fishy from the street. I'm sure it's ok or they would have been out of business long ago, but the stink warns me off (then again I just walked by it today and no stinky) -
For future reference, if you have more time and the inclination to jump on the Q to Church Ave, there are a lot of fishmongers around there where you can get some great fish for low prices. They have whole fish in all sizes and you can see for yourself how fresh it is by looking at the eyes and the skin.
At some places they give you a bucket and a bag, you grab what you want and then they will fillet it, or just gut it and take the bones out if that is what you want. A tip is appreciated for this service and they do a much more thorough job than at the more expensive fish places in Manhattan and fancier parts of Brooklyn. Also, if you want an enormous fish, they have them. Also, freezer cases with stuff like octopus and crab legs. -
if you're willing to leave the hood, chinatown is fabulous. if you take the b to grand, there are three places right on that corner. great prices, great selection, very fresh.

in the 'nabe, i've never been disappointed, product-wise, by sealand on flatbush. that being said, i've also never been especially impressed, product-wise nor price-wise. which is still a good deal, i believe, for a convenient local fish monger. when i am more ambitious, i head to court street to fish tales; to asian fish market in bensonhurst on 86th and 18th ave (amazing seafood at ridiculously inexpensive prices); and a huge place in bay ridge with a name something like 'quarterflash,' but i havent been there lately.

If u are brave enough to venture east, theres a good fish place on Fulton and Nostrand. Everything I got from there has been absolutely delicious... flounder, crab, shrimp, w/e, and the prices are decent.
