if you saw people eating bratWURST, curryWURST and anything WURST you get from an imbis in the street, you saw them eating sausage. Granted it's rare to see someone walking the street with a weißwurst or blutwurst, but you see people eating wurst in semmel all over, or standing outside an imbis with a currywurst. Or you see little kids playing with their wienerwurst at lunch time.

German brewers take their beer seriously. Germans just drink it (and know what good beer is), without the seriousness, just as any other culture. If the most serious food you got to eat was sausage, it's a shame you missed out on the real german cuisine.

That aside, my real complaint about your original message was that you had only stereotypes to go on when deciding to avoid the 5 am drinkers. Maybe, as someone pointed out, they were night workers. Or maybe they were just enjoying a beer in the company of friends outside, like any of us might enjoy. What about their appearance signaled to you they were no good? Because I'm guessing if you saw some dudes in fancy suits out there drinking at 5 am from paper bags, you wouldn't have purposely avoided them.

mett is delicious, and I highly recommend it to everyone. Germans do beer better than all (not most). And I think the economic situation that drives the neighborhood to be less than desirable and the clash of new and old is not so simple as you've described it.

Also, I wasn't correcting your spelling but pointing that you said you saw people eating wurst on the street but never sausage. Wurst means sausage. And my name is not Herman.

Yeah, I changed the subject and made fun of what was being said, because frankly I don't think this is a real forum for helpful discussion.

But since you laid the cards on the table, I might as well, too: I was dancing around saying it, but here goes --- You assumed they were thugs because they weren't white and they were dressed a bit more street than wall street. Is this correct? Hey, that's OK, because they assume you've been driving their rents up and causing their neighborhood businesses to be replaced by Milk Bar because you are white and look like you head off to a publisher's office every morning.

Milk bar, Wash Commons, Franklin Pk, Chavalla's, Glass Shop, Cheryl's, Sepia have all opened because there is a demand. Anybody can go there and do. Again it's back to the schools. Will whites send their children to an under performing school with less parental participation than a school 2 miles away? Time will tell where money will be spent. But the answer to your question is no, I don't care if your jeans are baggie or your shoes,hat and tee shirt color match. Whites do not drive up the rents, the demand for housing near public transportation and local services does. Whites and blacks are getting along all over the city, Criminals are unwelcome everywhere for more reasons than I can list. Crime,guns and drugs are not a badge of courage as many see them as, living amongst shitty people should not be source of pride. I was on the B train and saw a minor scuffle between two students. The conductor reacted by taking the train out of service and called the cops, The young black girl next to me said to her friend, "call the cops and tell them it's white girl getting beat up so that they will hurry up". The two sad things are that she feels that way and that she could be right. Higher community standards are god for everybody no matter how they are achieved. Who cares why Milk Bar is there, would you want a liquor store or nail salon instead, I won't return there because a 9 dollar egg sandwich is dumb, not because of the racial makeup of their customers.
