Milk Bar experience

I'm pleased, but amazed, by how crowded Milk Bar is, given not-so-great reports on the quality of the food and coffee......does it prove the notion that overcharging people in a hip environment will attract lots of people interested in looking cool?

i really like this place. it doesn't bother me that they buy groceries from The Met, especially since no one here who had these sightings seems to actually have any idea what exactly was bought. maybe it was milk, maybe butter, maybe eggs.
does it really matter?
yeah, i could buy the ingredients myself, and it would cost less, but i like the atmosphere, the people that work there, including the owner, are very friendly, and the food tastes good, much better than if i made it at home. -
Having some experience with small businesses, its not unusual for them to run out of something mid-day or mid-shift and re-up from the local supermarket. Its not the best way to run a business (usually pricing is better buying in bulk from restaurant supply or "clubs") but its done to provide for customers. Would you rather hear "We're out of granola", "We don't have any basil", "Our ice machine is on the fritz so all our drinks are at room temperature", or do you want someone to have what it is you've ordered?
You can always choose to make something at home for less, but if that's what you want then why eat out at all? -
i went back for food at milk bar yesterday & it was really good. the service was a bit slow, but since i was there to hang with friends it was actually perfect. nice & relaxing vibe.
i just wish the coffee//baked good to go combo was less $. -
Their hot to go cups are shockingly tiny, but the coffee's taste was good.

terrible analogies. if the sandwiches aren't made with quality ingredients they should be around $6-7.
it costs about $1.00 to make a shirt.
a compact disc not even 2 dollars.
you are getting "ripped off" as you say, every time you buy anything. the cost of going to a restaurant where people cook you food is always more expensive than it costs to cook at at home yourself. that's the whole point. when people in the neighborhood pay 500K for a 1 bedroom apartment, i don't think 9 bucks for a nice sandwich is outrageous. kansas, this isn't. -
I actually went in and sat down for breakfast, had the avocado gruyere toast thing, delicious!
I know this place is expensive, but on par with Chavella's, so it's not that shocking. The food came out quick, coffee is good, waiters were nice.
I won't be going here every day, but a fun brunch every few weeks is reasonable to me. -
Took the parents (who were visiting), the hubs, and the baby on Monday for breakfast. Sat outside. Dog came with. Food was good, not noteworthy. Service was great, guy was super nice and fast. Other patrons were congenial and there was a cool neighborly atmosphere. Pricetags were a bit steep, but it's a new biz on Vandy for pete's sake, what do we expect? I'll go back for coffee and pastries. To me the service and the atmosphere is worth making Milk Bar a treat now and then.

still haven't bought a sandwich, but their coffee is delicious. I also had a square raspberry Australian donut and it was pretty damn good.

20 bucks for 2 in Brooklyn? Expensive? Smarten up or move to Idaho.

I just got back there and I have to say, I liked it a lot and I definitely see myself going back. The place is casual and comfortable, and the staff is very friendly. My coffee was strong and not overpriced at $2 for a sit-down place- I don't think you'd find it cheaper at most diners.
The half full egg toastie, with ham, gruyere and a poached egg on a piece of toasted sourdough was very satisfying for $7, and the ingredients were quality. They definitely don't have that ham at Met Food.
I also got to take a look at their small bites menu for the evenings, and it looked great. Everything is quite reasonably priced, and I could definitely see myself coming here for a drink and a bite before dinner. Tonight is their first night.
