Helios is pleasant, especially if you can get one of the few outdoor tables in the front. We've been there a few times, and were always satisfied with the food. Haven't tried any of the others.
-
Racho Alegre--eh, if you want that type of food go to Rachel's or Burrito Bar for better food and drinks
-
I can't believe i've only been to one of those. scalino is ok...i like their artichoke appetizer and prices were fine....they used to be byob, which i liked. i think they have a license now and stopped that
-
We order take-out from Picasso from time to time. I like their Thai curry dishes quite a bit.
I haven't eaten at Rancho Allegre in years. I remember it as mediocre Mexican food but IMO most Mexican restaurants in NYC leave much to be desired. They are lax (or used to be) about carding underage customers. My son and his friends would go there to get served when he was underage.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Pizza Plus. Does Roz still own it? We used to live a block or so away and it was a regular dinner destination when my kids were little.
That's all I got. -
The people at Pizza Plus are really nice. Really really nice. Their crust is kind of puffy and very dense and chewy - more like what you'd get at a national chain (but tastes better). It is good but not my favorite style of crust so I don't eat there often, despite the fact that usually niceness is key in my book. I wish they'd offer their usual crust as well as a more traditionally "NY" crust.
I've only ordered from Watana once. They're one of those places that charges you another $2 if you want rice with your dish - that irks me because I already feel guilty enough about wasting money by ordering out in the first place, to get juiced another $2 for a cup of plain rice just rubs salt in the wound. Anyhow - the pad thai seemed less flavorful than others in the neighborhood. The vegetable dish we ordered had lots of flavor and was very good. -
Not sure why this is under Chicklynian, but......
I love Ten! We get takeout or eat there at least once a week. Their sushi is really good and plentiful and I like that they have apple or mango in some of the rolls. It's different and yummy! -
[retracted - realized i was thinking of a different place]
-
never ate at any of them.....
-
The only one I've eaten at was Helios. It was breakfast, and it was nothing special.
"Fish & Sip" wins the prize for most repellent name. I immediately visualize Dan Aykroyd's Bass-O-Matic sketch from SNL. -
Holy Shit! Danny Hellman agrees with Carnivore! A sure sign of the Apocalypse.
I forgot that I've been to Pizza Plus - one of the reasons I overlook it often is because they only sell by the slice during the day. The slices are average -

rancho allegre - i remembered it being mediocre mexican food, my most recent visit last summer confirmed it as awful mexican food.
picasso - wasn't pablo spanish? this place does a lot of different foods and does them all adequately. the food has never been offensive but ive almost always felt like i've had better elsewhere -
Alto Voce - never been, but I think Sotto Voce is one of the worst restaurants around and will never go here.
Athena- never been
Babouche= went for brunch once, the food is pretty good, loved the atmosphere and the chairs.
Fish & Sip=never been, name turns me off
Guayas-never been
Helios-never been
Java-never been
Mee Thai-never been
Picasso Asian Fusions-never been
Pizza Plus-used to go here and order here all the time. haven't been there or had their food in years though. When I was a regular, I thought the food was very good. Never had their pizza, only the food.
Playa - never been. neighbor went once and liked it.
Rancho Alegre-never been
Scalino-never been
Ten-never been
Watana-never been -
Alto Voce--never been. will only spend money on really good Italian, and this doesn't seem to be so
Athena --dying to go, but haven't made it yet
Babouche --haven't been
Fish & Sip --stupid name, poor location
Guayas --no clue
Helios --haven't been
Java --meh. fine.
Mee Thai --meh. fine
Picasso Asian Fusions --haven't been
Pizza Plus -- Possibly some of the nicest people in food service in Brooklyn. Food is good. Not the best, but a really easy place to go for a casual meal. My daughter refers to this as the "nice pizza place" because everyone is so lovely. And their beer is cheap.
Playa --never been
Rancho Alegre --meh on food, but server was nice.
Scalino --see comment about italian before
Ten --basic sushi
Watana-- fine -
Will somebody put down Playa already, so I can tell them not to be a Playa hater!
-
Alto Voce - won't bother to spend the money with Al Di La here
Athena - never been, where is it?
Babouche - no desire to go, but they finally turned the lights on in the place
Fish & Sip - heard mixed things. for a laugh look at the menu, worst spelling ever.
Helios - seems a little pricey for what it is
Mee Thai - prefer Song
Pizza Plus - okay food
Rancho Alegre - prefer La Taqueria
Scalino - heard great things, but see Al Di La comment above.
Watana - I heard they closed... -
Athena is at 6th Avenue & 14th St.
-
1) this thread sucks
2) every place on that list is second rate -

Watana - Big fan - my delivery regular. Not too daring, but solid.
Helios - Ate once, very happy. Casual and comfy. Far away (from me).
Scalino - Ate once, very happy. Upscale food, casual vibe.
Java - Nice family restaurant, very friendly. Indo food is 'tricky', not quite as user-friendly as Thai (or the ubiquitous Chinese). I love it though.
Athena - Been once, loved it. Great food, friendly and comfy vibe. -
Helios can be hit or miss. Their entrees are good. I wouldn't recommend the burgers and definitely not the fries.
I made the mistake of going to Fish and Sip when a band of pretty girls came in at which point I became invisible.
Is Rancho Alegro the place by the Conservatory? If it is I have always gotten very good service and food there. -
Scalino is great - their grilled diver scallops are unbelievable. On the other hand, every time I eat there, I leave hungry. We were there about two weeks ago. Wife and I shared the scallops, then I had the braised lamb. If I hadn't eaten so much bread, I would have been hungry.
this may be a matter of quality vs. quantity, since I think their food is fresh and generally outstanding. -

I say that if you leave hungry, then the restaurant sucks. That's the reason I'm not a fan of the much-lauded Franny's. While everything we ate was yummy, the plates are small and overpriced. Fuck that shit. -
I passed by the new Istanbul Park restaurant today while doing errands, got the menu....then got a craving for a nice gyro platter. Went there tonight, sat down (place was very busy) and ordered the gyro....but, they were out of it.
so I got into the car, took a nice little drive down to Sahara on Coney Isl Ave, and had the best gyro anywhere! Fresh bread, delicious rice, yummy!
Now going to sink into a gyro coma.... -
They were out of gyro??????

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sahara! And it's right next door to my favorite bialy place in the city, Coney Island Bagels and Bialys. I stock up with a dozen or two for the freezer every time I make it over there.

It was well worth the trip!
Added bonus: I got a parking spot just a few doors down from my house! :P :P -
Rancho Allegre is like good home cooking, nothing too fancy but very satisfying. The food is much better than a few years ago (since about when they put up the lit awning). Much more intimate than Santa Fe or Burrito Bar. The staff is wonderful. Love the place!
-
Helios - Used to order burgers from there a lot which were good. But now we get from Burritoville which are bigger/cheaper and good.
Fish & Sip - Funny that people don't eat there because it's got a lame name. Can't say I quite get the logic there. If they did eat there they'd find reasonably priced and inventive salads and panini that are actually quite good. The side salad that accompanies the sizable panini are big and more than just lettuce and junk. Beat that for $8. Haven't had the spaghetti or fish but I see plenty of others getting em, and they seem happy. -
Had a fish sandwich at Fish & Sip....worst fish sandwich I have ever had. Poorly breaded, overcooked with a ridiculous amount of sauces and toppings on it.
-
Babouche is great - love the tagines, the pistilla and the lentil salad.

Here, I'll help you: (for me, at least) the name "Fish & Sip" conjures up mental images of a fish-flavored beverage, or maybe a fish sipping a beverage through a straw. Neither of these images is appetizing.

To put it another way, I don't care how tasty the food is or how low the prices are at Urine Palace; I will never eat there.
Howdy, Stranger!
