  • damn, I need some grow lights.

    ...and a High Times subscription.
  • Nah, just get mushroom spores.
  • Episode #6

As promised, today's episode involves a trip to Lowes!
...I was running dangerously low on lumber and nails.

    Here's the lovely starting point:
    image

Here's the even better looking destination:
(trees and water features just can't compete with a parking lot, huge florescent "LOWES" sign, the Gowanus "Expressway" and a metal recycling facility)

    image

    must. resist. buying. decorative. molding.
    image

must get home with lumber before subway is flooded with people who still work for a living.

    image

A picture with a dog AND lumber!
...there's no way those "naughty photos" on the internet can compete.

    image

Tune in tommorrow for "building the frame and door"

P.S. While you weren't looking I finished painting the lower closet, and then filled it with its previous crap, putting us an entire episode AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. (see if you ever hear that from the MTA....)

    For those keeping track. $68 was spent today at Lowes on nails, 1" x 5" x 6' lumber, 1" x 4" x 6' lumber, a knob, and 16' of non-exciting 3" molding.

    Total spent to date: $90.
The workroom generously contributed paint and hinges, so we have now spend the whole budget: $100.
  • Dude looks like he's ready to get things done!

Um, the first thing I noticed in this photo was the B&H bag. I want a bag full of camera goodies from there...

Then I noticed the cute dog, then the clock. Is that a bacon clock or do I just have bacon on the brain?
  • The camera bag holds the plastic bags that are re-used on Dude's walks.
...between reusing bags and picking bags blowing around, we've never needed to buy poop bags.

The clock is a train clock, it whistles on the hour. ...it goes with the model train on the ceiling.
  • It would be better if it was a bacon clock. And it would be better if the train was a bacon train.
  • you are correct, and incorrect.

Correct: If the train was a bacon train, the clock would appropriately have to be a bacon clock.

    Incorrect: "it would be better"
  • True. It would be more accurate to say "it would be MUCH better."
  • greetings, and welcome to Episode #7:
"Building and painting the good frame."

Today involved fun with the chopping miter saw.
Using scraps of wood as shims, and (you guessed it) paint.

Here's the snazzy frame. Plumb in all directions as per the square and the level.
    image

And here's that same frame, under its first coat of paint:

    image

And here's a shot of my dog lying by my shoes so when I go out, so does he (the shot also contains just a small hint of how sexy my legs are). sexting?

    image

...and then they went to the park. See you Tuesday, when we built the door.
  • Wow Flo, great link!
  • yea, I'm gonna ask Flexi for wine corks and get started.
  • whynot_31 wrote: yea, I'm gonna ask Flexi for wine corks and get started.
hey now, there are plenty of other winos around at least as wino-ey as I am. I'm not going to name names, but they know who they are
  • do they save their corks?

    ...this could take no time.
  • Not saying I'm a wino, just saying I'd help out this cause.

Expecting quirky corky photos from finished project Whynot.
  • greetings and welcome to Episode #8: "The door gets built."

Two major decisions were made over the weekend:
    1. Let's build one door, not two.
    2. Because this will be a thick door, lets not bother to set up the router table. Let's make a simple, sturdy door.

    the front frame:
    image

    The back frame:
    image

fun with the router allowed the panel to be fit into the back frame:
    image

The front was just nailed and glued to the back.
Fun with molding gives it an attractive appearance (hinges are just for show, not yet attached):

    image

I still need to paint it and fit the hinges, but this is a rough idea of what it'll look like:

Here's today's dog shot (note, includes small amount of tongue):

    Tomorrow's episode: More Painting!
  • Elmer's Glue?? You need green to white technology! Mighty Putty!

  • dude looks zonked (but still soooo cute). have the two of you been sniffing that glue?
  • someone has dubbed Billy Mays....

    inserted pottie mouth words.

Anyway, nope, it's not a substitute for wood filler.
  • doesn't the panel have to float in the frame? I have some poorly made upper closet doors that crack in the winter when the wood dries out and contracts...i wouldn't want you to have to suffer than injustice!!
  • we'll see. The panel was put in with some glue and brads, but there is lots of room around the panel. (see shot above)

The door is also almost 2" thick, and now covered in several layers of paint so it would have to get really cold and dry for it to be effected.

The paint will dry overnight, and we should be able to hang the door tomorrow. ...our final episode (sadness).

  • Episode #9 is short and sweet:

Mods: Please lock this thread, it has gone on for far too long.

As a tribute to Sesame Street, this programming was brought to you by the letter D (for Dewalt contractor saw). H (for Hitachi for chop miter saw), and S (for Shop Vac).
  • ahh nooo, shove some linens in there and show us another pic of Dude the dog! Asap!
  • Nope, someone (might of been Em, I forget) already begged me to post more and told me that they'd be my BFF, but I turned them down.

Wasn't me. Carnivore is my BFF. I wouldn't trade him for some pictures when I could just break into your mansion and take my own.
  • there were 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999 PM's requesting that I be their BFF, so I'm sure everyone understands the mistake.
