sad signs on seventh ave
the market that opened.. what? 6-months ago?.. near president street has closed. and yes, the prices were high.. and yes, they stopped being open 24-hrs a day.. and yes, there obviously wasn't enough of a demand to meet their estimated 12-thousand dollars a month rent.. but the family that ran the store was very nice, and i, for one, am sad to see them go.
the other troublesome sign: i went into leaf & bean today and they didn't have any of the coffee i wanted to buy, and i kept asking 'how about this" and 'how about that' and 'o-k, do you have this?' hope it's only something like a delivery problem, but....

The phone store on 7th Avenue between 9th and 10th is closed and the Korean deli between 10th and 11th ( east side ) was gone when I walked by yesterday.
While I was less than fond of the phone place, it was at least fairly well established. If there is such a thing in these times. -
I went in that market a couple of times in the last 6 weeks and got gouged both times (the last time was for one of those odwalla juices that are ~$3.50 everywhere else, they charged me 4, and that's when they lost my business). I would absolutely hate to see Leaf & Bean go. I'll go down there tomorrow and pick up a couple pounds of joe.
on a slightly related topic, I think the little bodega to the right of Key Food on Flatbush @ Sterling just got stuck up around 4P...lots of police on the scene. -

The Korean deli is Peppermill, and they are closed until mid-Sept for renovations. They just finished gutting the place, and I'm told that it's going to be larger when finished and offer additional sandwich and grill items. I miss their coffee already.

Right, Korean place is rennovating(much needed) to keep pace with the other delis.

Actually, I see them as a leader. They installed a coffee roaster and their coffee was superior to most other places at a very reasonable price. I don't know of any other place that did that. They always have a good selection of organic and freshly prepared food, plus a grill and good sandwiches. I have a suspicion that when they're finished, they're going to have one of the nicest-looking places around with a progressive menu. -
that market on 7th and president was a total rip off!
sad to see businesses close up, but lots of items were a dollar more than the deli at berkeley and 7th (which is fantastic, btw).
there just wasn't demand. there is garfield farm, key food, blue apron, union market, the deli i just spoke about on berkeley and 7th, natural land II (which bought out the deli across from key food on 7th), back to the land, d'vine taste and ace supermarket all within a few blocks of each other. not to mention the food co-op. how many more places to pick up food did we need in a 5 block radius?
in better news, there is a new men's store opening on 5th and berkeley and the old trade winds space on lincoln and 7th is becoming a beauty salon. -
what we DO need up in this area (ok, not need, but...) is a vietnamese sandwich place (god knows why 2 opened within 3 blocks of each other farther down 7th), a place for cheap toiletries (i'm REALLY missing super savers, which is STILL empty after all these months...THANKS BERMAN REALTY!) and i think a place where you can get good salads made the way you like them could do really well up here. lots of people work from home and there's nothing like that around. a place like chop chop on smith street would be great. would also like to see a place where one can get a really great burger in this section of 7th.

Seriously? You were ecstatic about this place opening up back in January and jumped down my throat for saying pretty much what you just wrote.

caseo: well i was excited because it was going to be 24 hours and i actually did go there late night (despite the high prices) which was convenient, but once they stopped staying open 24/7, it was a bit pointless because of all the other options around. i think the 24/7 was their niche, but apparently there wasn't enough overnight business to keep them afloat.
i didn't realize they were going to be so much more expensive than all the other places around.
live and learn. i never said i was always right. i'm human. -
belzjm, no one's perfect, especially not me. Pax? They always had the most amazing smelling flowers, I loved walking by on my way to the bus. Most flowers don't smell like anything anymore, I'll miss that.

I am so relieved about Peppermill! I know there are a lot of delis grouped into this section but they each offer something different from the others.

I will never shop at Leaf and Bean again because I was so harrassed by the manager (owner)? last time around. Maybe 60ish, shoulder length curly brown hair, and very rude. I asked if I could have a frequent buyer card and she said "well I guess I can but it doesn't really make sense since I've never seen you in here before," and so on. She was quite aggressive and pushy and embarrassed me for only buying a pound of coffee. I told her I was buying for someone else, and she kept asking me if I drink coffee and why I wasn't buying any for myself and when I said I live on the other side of the neighborhood, she wanted to know where and disapprovingly pointed out that it was only a 15-20 minute walk away. Decidedly an unpleasant hard sell.

Anyone over 60 has earned the right to harass whomever they please.

Maybe she was 58.

I can't imagine that being the owner. She has always been friendly and helpful (and I don't buy a ton there, ftr). We've even had guests from out of town stop there and all come out raving about how nice it was, so I don't think this is the norm. Sucks that this happened to you. -

Today I saw another "for rent sign" on Union Street near Tea Lounge. -

Not sure what we're all buying, but the prices at the former 24 hour place seemed like all the other small grocery stores on 7th Avenue that are not open 24 hours. They had huge bundles of flowers that were much cheaper and fresher than what other places sell around here.

Another question: how do you go out of business so fast? -

I decided to stop shopping at Leaf & Bean a few years back after my wife & I tried to exchange a non-food gift that someone had bought for us there. We were actually ready to buy some expensive mugs, at a price much higher than the gift exchange would've gotten us. The Leaf & Bean counter guy was about to do the exchange for us, when the owner/manager swooped in and announced that the gift had been bought "on sale," and that all sale purchases were non-exchangeable.
That's how you lose customers. It's just not a smart way to do business.
