Rep. Wilson calls Obama a liar -then shuts down his website

Rep Joe Wilson from SC called Obama a liar during Obama's speech (what is going on with the politicians in that state?). The Repubs condemned his outburst (Wilson apologized shortly thereafter): http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/09/joe.wilson/

  • SC: there seems to be a bunch of them who are singlemindedly anti-immigration. I was spammed for years by one of them with his newsletters about his latest moves against immigrants (I'm not a citizen!) and it only stopped after I cc:d his ISPs abuse address (congress's) saying it was offensive and racist.
  • His opponent in 2010 is reaping the benefit of Wilson's outburst. I checked out his actblue.com page right after the speech and he had $4500 in contributions. This morning it's at $98,700 (up 2500 in the last 10 minutes)

Lame. The guy should have simply held a press conference afterwards and calmly explained why he thought Obama was not being honest or why Obama was incorrect.

the problem is that, in order to do that, he would need to have a logical, cogent, and well-reasoned argument for why obama's plan would give health care to illegal immigrants. there is no such argument.
  • mr. met,
The argument is that health care workers are not allowed to ask a patient if he is legal or not.
  • OBAMA: "The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally." One congressman, South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson, shouted "You lie!" from his seat in the House chamber when Obama made this assertion. Wilson later apologized.

THE FACTS: The facts back up Obama. The House version of the health care bill explicitly prohibits spending any federal money to help illegal immigrants get health care coverage. Illegal immigrants could buy private health insurance, as many do now, but wouldn't get tax subsidies to help them.

Irrelevant, health care workers are not allowed to ask immigration status. Are you presuming that all illegals, wanting to be upright American citizens will volunteer their status in the emergency room.
  • Irrelevant, health care workers are not allowed to ask immigration status.
are they allowed to ask immigrant status now?

Interesting. I believe you, but would you have a source for this?

Sounds like the schools. A school can’t ask if a child is a legal immigrant or not.
  • Probably not in emergency situations. With Obama's plan though they will certainly receive enhanced and preventative medical treatment.
You can make an argument that this is the right and just thing to do, but that's not the point. You said there was no " logical, cogent, and well-reasoned argument for why obama's plan would give health care to illegal immigrants".

    Mod,

Your point is well taken. There is a republican response, and, diverging Democratic responses as well. The President should be treated with respect and elected officials should explain their diverging views at the right time in a professional manner.

there is no way to know that.

    fair enough.

but, if some illegal immigrants get health care WHILE the tens of millions of americans who DON'T have it now are getting it, i don't really have a huge problem.

    Seroiusly Pokersloper?
Do you think that emergency room personal are allowed to determine the legal status of a person before they treat the gunshot wound?
At what point in health care would they be allowed to stop giving aid? Maybe before rhinoplasty?

    Mod,

I don't know what emergency workers can and can't do, so I asked. If you take that as insincere, then so be it.
  • in other words, i don't see illegal immigrants/immigration as a key issue in this debate.

Well, maybe you can afford the extra tax burden. Many cannot, thus the protests against it.
It is simplistic to label these people as crackpots and "unamerican" as some have.
  • Pokersloper,
    Sorry for the heavy hand.
  • Well, maybe you can afford the extra tax burden. Many cannot, thus the protests against it.
    1. i am not conceding that all of this abuse by illegal immigrants will actually happen. i do not believe that there will not be some control over this.

    2. that's the problem with people in this country. they know that tens of millions of their fellow americans, who they love so dearly because they love america so dearly, can't get health care. BUT, they don't want them to receive health care if there is even the slightest possibility that they will pay more taxes. not that i think the average american will pay more taxes to fund illegal immigrants, but that's the way people think. particularly conservatives. if you love this country so much, why don't you love the people in it?
  • modsquad wrote: Pokersloper,

    thank you.
  • It's because Rep. Wilson is a joint venture subsidiary between Pfizer and Aetna.
  • Millions of H1B visa holders have worked and work in this country since the program was established. They do pay Social Security, Medicare and other taxes, but cannot ask for the benefits. The majority leave the country. That is a huge amount of money that goes to benefit Americans.

The "illegal aliens" most republicans love to hate also pay these and other taxes, be it with false SS numbers or by simply buying something at a store.

Wilson is a crackpot and is unamerican, yes. Not only because of the outburst of yesterday (no one did the same for the proven LiAR that is Bush, respect of the office winning), but because, like so many other republicans, he caters to the worst prejudiced line among the people.
  • like so many other republicans, he caters to the worst prejudiced line among the people.
like good ole bill maher says, if you are a racist, you are probably a republican.

    ^ ^ ^ the truth most anti-immigration demagogues can't handle.
  • Mr. met, I was responding to the snickering attitude of many on this blog that Obama can do no wrong and specifically that there is no reasonable argument against his plan. Did I miss the thread on Reid and Pelosi regarding their stupid statements and/or hypocrisy?

good ole Bill Maher also says things like, 'If you are a wimp, you are probably a Democrat.' Maher is more critical of the democrats then just about anyone. Maher is an entertainer, but he is smart and hits a lot of nuance that others miss. His health care show with two Georgia republicans and Huffington was fantastic.

Surely expanding primary coverage to immigrants and encouraging them to take out insurance would reduce total cost and ultimately increase your disposable income, since the current regime, where they use the emergency room only, is the most expensive solution, and diverts resources from efficiently treating emergencies.

i know. i watch his show.

I watch his show too. I wish he would get Tony Blankly or Newt Gingrich on - Maher handles smart republicans well.
  • I gotta go to work and therefore I'm cashing in.
I know, don't let the door hit me on the way out!
