Place to sit and work?

Hi everyone,

I'm moving to PH next week- I used to live in the area, but it's been six years and I have a feeling it's changed a lot! Just a quick question- I work freelance, so I was wondering if you guys could recommend a good cafe or somewhere to work in. Ideally it'd be a place with wifi and a comfortable chair and food, where they don't mind me sitting there all day.
I know of a ton of places in the Slope that I could go to, but I'd rather support local places if there's a good one.

    Hmmm- well, coffee shops have been getting a little upset lately (news report on 1010 this morning/signs going up in coffee shops around town) with people who buy one cup of coffee and then squat at a table all day (don't blame them).

    Whatever happened to the LIBRARY!?!?!? If they don't have wifi, there's many city parks that do these days....

    The main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library indeed has good wireless, a cafe and Snapple machines, and you can stay there all day (it's even open from 9am-9pm many days).

    But the outlets are hard to come by; there are some under the tables on the second floor, but not on the first, where the comfortable Aeron chairs are.

    I've heard there's wireless access at the Blue Marble coffee shop on Underhill between Sterling and St. John's, but it's very small; most of the shop is taken up by a day care center in the back.

    Ah, thanks- I did think of the library but I'd love a place where I could get breakfast and lunch, and didn't know there was a cafe- that could be perfect.

    The library is indeed wireless. I have used it many times, and is definitely somewhere you can sit all day and not feel like you're taking up space.

    I don't do it all the time because I don't want to abuse it, but I have definitely sat all day at Outpost, which is not in Prospect Heights, but it's quite close and I like it a lot. Lots of people working online there. They have wifi and sandwiches and juice and coffee and beer. Buncha outlets to plug in. And a back yard!

    Sit and Wonder on Washington and St Marks also has wifi, but it's smaller and doesn't have as many outlets.

    Glass Shop is great. On Classon Avenue by Sterling. Not a lot of outlets but works nonetheless.

    sit and wonder on washington & st marks is good if you're not super hungry - they have baked goods but not really meal-type food.

    outpost cafe (technically not prospect heights but close) on fulton st between grand & classon is great. good food, good coffee, etc.

    ortine's on washington & dean has wait service, but they're totally happy to let you sit with your laptop for hours. good if you're definitely eating, kinda awkward if you're just having coffee.

    Well, it's not a small cafe or in PH, but I got an email from Barnes & Noble announcing that they are offering complimentary Wi-Fi in all their stores now. However, not sure B&N good for concentrating with all the irritating music, children squealing and loudmouths on cell phones. . .but good luck!

    I love Sit and Wonder, except I hate the name my my roommates and I just call it SAW. They dont mind if you sit there all day, have lots of plugs, and it's normally really quiet and peaceful. I've seen them have sandwiches a couple of times, but not usually. But I love the burrito place across the street.

    The best and cheapest place for artisits and writers to work and mix a bit is the Brooklyn Artisit Gym on 7 street between 2 and 3 Avenues. 24 hour access. Room 58 for writers.

    Not the cheapest, but 24/7 at Twenty five a week, refrigerator, and share-brewed coffee a quarter.

    "Shit food" ? That's a bit harsh. I've eaten there 5 times and it's been great to good.

    Didn't see anyone post about Joyce Bakeshop on Vanderbilt at Park Place but my old roomie goes there to write pretty regularly. It gets kinda busy at certain times of the day on weekends, but I think it's not too bad during the week. They have quiche. Mmm.

    Also Heights Coffee on Flatbush at Park Place has comfy chairs. I think they have wifi as well and people seem to camp out there. I'm not remembering what their food selection is like though as I usually have just gone there for a cup of coffee when too early for dinner at Geido sushi nearby.

    certain things at abigails are good, like the steak sandwich. the pasta seems a little cheap. good coffee, and the owner is nice.

    I believe Soda Bar has wifi, from 12-8 is happy hour and the food is good (I'm especially a fan of the Chicken BLT). I haven't gone there to work but I've been told they're pretty chill about letting you stay for an extended period of time. Good luck not drinking though.

    I'm an Outpost regular myself. In fact I'm there right now.

    I like Joyce, but Heights Coffee has excrecable coffee. Additionally, they have on numerous occasions attempted to shill on these boards, and for that alone I would never patronize them, even if their coffee didn't taste like week-old dishwater.

    Ha! Ok. Point. I've only gotten dessert there (as in coffee with so much stuff in it, it's no longer coffee). One time I had actual coffee and it was horrible, one time it was actually reasonable. So I give them a 50/50 chance of ok coffee? Have not witnessed their attempts to shill, but that's kind of sad.

    Abigail's food is terrible and overpriced. Have you seen the reviews on yelp?

    Glass Shop has great coffee, but I think Outpost Cafe on Fulton street is much better for comfortable computing (and I agree, the snacks are very good).

    thanks for now being jobless and this thread, I checked out both the Glass Shop and the Outpost today.

    While I love the coffee at the Glass Shop, no free wi-fi available. At least, not available to me!

    Outpost, where I am now, is indeed comfortable and very friendly. Free wifi w/purchase. A little further from my home, but they're so cool here. :)

    Heights Coffee has unbelieeeeeeevably bad coffee. I can't believe that they're still in business.

    Ortine on Washington and Pacific is a great place to sit and work. They have wi-fi and bottomless cups of coffee. They also have the best entree size lunch salads in the neighborhood. And beer.

    ok, so as I mentioned up thread, I'm now out of a job and, upon recommendation from various friends, getting myself out of the house w/laptop and going to coffeeshops to surf for jobs so I can see other people and not get depressed.

    But, I seriously feel like a mooch. Here I am, been here about 2-3 hours. Bought 2 cups of coffee and a brownie and I'm using their wifi. Along w/other people.

    My instinct tells me not to make this a habit. I kinda feel like it's bad form. If I could, I'd buy more but I gotta watch the $$ now.

    Am I being too considerate? Do they want me here or should I limit my time? Thoughts?

    I'm leaving now. BTW, I'd give up my seat if I didn't have any food and if people were waiting.
