buying fish in chinatown

I've been buying fish at the Chinatown markets - the Manhattan and Sunset Park Chinatowns - for 10 years. Love it. And no, I have never gotten sick. The thing is they get it from the same boats the fancy places get it from, but the prices are ridiculously low.
Salmon is about $4 a pound. Squid is around $2.50. A big sack of mussels is just a couple of bucks maybe 3. Oh, and the shrimp!!! Go to your local supermarket and they'll have three kinds, small, medium and large. There are so many different types and sizes and so much cheaper than anything in the store.
I'm very happy about the fish markets in Chinatown. Go buy fish now! -
i may actually go buy mussels right now. are they they kind you need to scrub beards off?
-
No. They are commercial farmed mussels. There may be some hair, but very little.
Suggestion - while in Chinatown pick up some cans of Tom Yum soup and steam the mussels in that. It's good and easy - all you need is a can opener. -
thank you! i'm very hungry now

fish cheaper anywhere outside of PS.
...for example, it is cheaper at the fish market within Western Beef (corner of Empire and Washington) -

I've found that fish market somewhat suspect. It doesn't smell like a place you want to buy fish at all.

....I was strange before I began buying fish there.

The one thing to watch out for (except now that summer's over, not so much) is that the fish may not have been on ice or kept at "acceptable" refrigeration levels. During the summer, I saw lots of fish and other aquatic delicacies just sitting out in the sun.
Otherwise, I buy veggies/tofu/pasta/and lots of other stuff on 8th Avenue.
Howdy, Stranger!
