Place to sit and work?

Nothing wrong with sitting for 2 hours. I don't understand people who sit in coffee shops for like 6 hours, though. It's ok to sit amongst other people for a little while, but if you're really that busy with work, you should just work at home!!

Last week, I was hanging out with a friend in Fort Greene. We were chatting/catching up... then I realized that there were about 4 or 5 people on their computers... I felt like we were disrupting their work, so we left. How weird is that? This was during the evening hours, though, but they made me feel awkward, like they were listening to our conversation.

My rule of thumb is not to plug in, and only sit as long as your battery will last. Ideally the shop will let you sip coffee and charge like 50c for a refill. I don't feel bad helping a quiet place seem more alive, but if it starts to get crowded, time to free up some seats for those customers who just paid.

When I first began hanging at coffee shops I'd spend an hour or two at the coffee shop, then walk over to the Library, which had electrical outlets, and a no food / cell phone policy, but better air-conditioning. After charging up a bit at the library I would head home. This was in Mountain View, CA.

I recently "discovered" Ortine, which look to have plenty of seating for those who may be sitting around for a while, but these days I pay a premium to have a home office I really enjoy, and that leaves less money to spend at cafes.

Maybe the cafes should have a "tip jar" for the electric bill: if you sit around at an outlet you can throw an extra buck in the basket.
