BBG Membership Non Transferable - Grrrr! — Brooklynian

BBG Membership Non Transferable - Grrrr!

So the boyf and I bought a dual membership to The Gardens. I'd been meaning to do it for a while (ok, about three years), and the three block entrance line on Sakura Matsuri Day solidified the deal for us pretty quickly. Skipped the line, got the tax-deduction and two little wallet cards.

SO. It just so happens that the boyf works Wednesday nights - thus, every members-only night this summer I am solo. Thinking to myself, gee, wouldn't it be nice if I could bring a friend to use his card - maybe it would lead to the BBG getting another membership payment down the road!

Fast forward - I call the gardens to ask, and they tell me no deal. Cards are 'non-transferrable.' And no using the free passes I got for joining at member's only events. Now, I'd understand if I was profiting from this or giving away my card for someone else's use as well, and I understand the need to safeguard against this, but - I'm bringing a potential supporter, for fuck's sake!

Now that that's out of the way, does anyone know if they ever check ID at the door?

Comments

  • Never had'em check mine... not at the gate, not at the shop.
  • they do not check id. never. we have a dual membership too, and have, once or twice, used it in the manner you describe. no worries. and thanks for the reminder about late wednesdays!
  • Another "they never check" here. Although I am also annoyed about not being able to use the guest passes on members' only nights. This year we only got an individual membership for me because my husband works too much to be able to go to the garden very often and we're so often out of town on the weekend. But now he's locked out from going those evenings, which is the one time he'd be likely able to go.

Maybe we should go to the members' night together!
  • I'm up for it! Maybe we should do BBG Happy Hour on Members Only Wednesday nights. Now if only we could get around that pesky open container law...

Anyway, if you see a gawky redhead wandering around the rose garden tonight - come say hi!
  • I'm not sure this helps spinningpinwheel, but I just got something from BBG that says people with individual memberships are allowed to bring one guest to the members' only nights. So now I can bring my husband, with no guest pass needed. Maybe if spinningpinwheel is there with her imposter husband, we'll say hi.

do you have to pay for the guest?
  • I had a dual membership even when I was single, and I brought whoever whenever. No ID req, plant sale included.

I've never been to a member night - what are they like?

sooo nice. just really chill. on the regular late wednesdays, it's marvelous to have the place a little less crowded. (not to say that i think there shouldn't be plenty of people there, it's just different when there aren't. i am able to go during the workday often; the members' evenings are a nice chance to have that sense of open space for people who have grown-up jobs.) also, lying on the cherry esplanade, watching the sky darken behind the high kites being flown in the park.... it's just NICE.

the picnics are fun too. i love to eat outside, i miss having a yard, and the garden is just less hectic than the (also lovely) park. no dogs, joggers, bikes, frisbees, errant soccer balls, etc.
  • I actually just walked through the rose garden on my lunch break. Its really lovely right now - make sure you take a walk through next time you are there!

It implied that you didn't, but it wasn't really clear.
  • I've never had a problem with other people entering on my family membership card at the BBG as well as the Brooklyn Museum. I even send my babysitter with the kids sometime during the day, and there isn't a problem.
  • spinningpinwheel,

My husb and I have family membership too; we frequently walk in with pretend family members and nobody bats an eyelid. In fact, we once got about 5 people in for free. OK, not nice to not support the garden, I know.. but it was one of those 'line all the way to the museum' sorts of weekends.

I have the same problem as you actually because my husband teaches on Wed. nights. I'll be going with my one year old next wk - she loves it there sooo much.
