Two new restaurants to take over Pres St death spots?

According to Brownstoner, Delicious on the Slope's weird location will soon be reborn as a Mexican place, and a new cafe will take over the even weirder spot where the tiny Scandinavian cafe was.

I read this a minute or two after I'd wished for a dirt-cheap place where I could get some decent, no-frills Huevos Rancheros for breakfast mid-week. Will my wish come true?

  • I thought the other new cafe was taking over the old "Oak" space, which was a clothing boutique?
  • Oh, sorry. Just re-read the article. I guess it's been a while since I've walked down there... I had no idea it became a Scandanavian cafe!

The truly unfortunate thing is that the new place is going to be called Cafe DuCharme... who comes up with these names? Is this the stepsister to the Drama Cafe?

Ducharme = to bathe yourself in Spanish.

They should have gone with the German translation instead and called it Cafe Dusche.
  • Oooh! A cafe where you're seated in baths. Me like!

until the first pubic hair. Ick
  • So, El Jalepeno (in the old Delicious site) had their menu posted outside. Looks like fairly standard Mexican fare -- fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, tamales. Most categories had one or two vegetarian options. Prices were on the middling high side ($8-12 for a burrito, $12-15 for fajitas), but I liked that it looked like they made an effort with the menu, even having a page with trivia about jalepeno peppers. They had different lunch and dinner menus, but I'm not sure how they differed.

I don't know exactly when they're opening, but it looks like soon.
  • El Jalepeno is open. I think, given the prices, the walk down to Calexico might be worth it. Everything down there is about 1/3 cheaper than this new place. But I'll try it; it's SO close to my apartment.
  • I just tried Cafe DuCharme after reading good reviews on Yelp. The place is amateurish and not up to any positive reviews. Very plain decor, the owner is not welcoming, and the menu very limited - basically just coffee and a refrigerator with Minutemaid products (basic sodas and juice). Other blogs/boards say there are sandwiches but the only thing was a ham and cheese croissant - the ham inside was literally one thin piece about 1" x 2". There were also a few pastries sitting on platters. I ordered an almond chocolate croissant which was cold. I asked the proprietor if he could heat our food but he said he had no microwave. So we left to heat up our food at home, very unsatisfied, and will not return. I don't know how a place like this, off the main street, will stay in business.

    Sounds like Cafe NoCharme.
  • They offer to warm croissants up now -- I was there last week. I declined (in a hurry) but dudes, le croissant was stale. It was only 9am.
They had plastic wrap over the pastries, but that's not working for 'em.

They'll have to step up with something 100% more awesome to survive...
