West Indian Food — Brooklynian

West Indian Food

I usually frequent two West Indian places in the neighborhood. Trinidad Ali on Fulton (not been there in a while) and Buff Patty on Myrtle.

Are there any others that are better than these two ?

I miss the old "Sparkles" ( I think) across from Kum Kau that closed down a few years ago. That was better than both these.

Somehow I find both the above, pretty average. Is that true or am I being a food snob ?

  • I still haven't tried good west indian food since moving to the nabe many years ago. I'm disappointed in myself.

    :(
  • I go to Imhotep quite a bit and it is very good (though don't go with the greens, I'm from the south and they just aren't spicy enough)- located in crown heights though. There is also Ital shak, but south of Atlantic as well. Haven't tried Melanie's on Fulton yet, but I've heard good things. I also tend towards Ali's Rotis. Will be following this thread...

Sidenote, though really not necessary - I am a vegan and my opinions are based on the vegan dishes as these places.
  • Maybe part of the issue is that you're not really comparing apples to apples. Sprinkles was a Guyanese spot. Buff Patty is Jamaican, and Ali's is probably Trinidadian. There are differences in the cooking.
  • Ali's IS Trinidadian (I just learned that the other day actually). I love them. There are also good roti places if you go further down Flatbush, to Church Ave. I don't know of great spots in Bed Stuy/Clinton Hill, but will also be following to see what other people say.

For the vegan: there's a great all Ital, vegan place catty corner across the street from Ali's called Scoop. They have soy ice cream, but also food. I used to live over in that neighborhood and Scoop was by far my favorite.
  • For Roti, you must try Gloria's on St John's just east of Nostrand. They have the best roti around. Ask for a little pepper sauce and its like heaven. I also like Sunshine on Nostrand between Union and EP but it may be a bit far from you. I get patties from the place on Marcy and Fulton (sorry, I forget the name).
  • Bickels Jerk Express is pretty good. They are on Fulton St off of Franklin and Claver.Another option in the nabe.
