Problems Getting Homeowner's Insurance — Brooklynian

Problems Getting Homeowner's Insurance

Subject: Problems Getting Homeowner's Insurance

I'm the owner of an old frame row-house in Sunset Park (not brick or brownstone). I've never made an insurance claim during my 9+years here, and the house is in good repair, in a decent part of town. But this year I've had a TERRIBLE time getting homeowner's insurance. My previous company refused to renew due to "global warming." Others I've signed up for have canceled after a month or quoted 50% higher fees than the original quote, because they say they are no longer insuring homes constructed before 1980 or some other such nonsense. Are other area homeowners having similar problems with insurance renewals this year? Has anyone found a company that has a friendlier attitude toward the neighborhood and its old houses? I'm actually starting to feel kind of desperate.

  • i heard something similar from someone in long island. the insurance company claimed it was now a hurricane area. most likely
the insurance companies are grasping at straws to get cash to make up for their recent losses, hoping you won't have time to research an alternative and will just pay up at least for now. we're all the same boat
(altho there's no hurricane). if i hear of a more user friendly insurance co.
    i will let you know.
  • try TSC Direct, I use them for my home in Greenwood Heights.

My friend had the same problem she has a frame house and live close to 1st ave, the insurance company told her she lives to close to the water
  • Call Community Board 7 and make a complaint 718-854-0003

This has been an issue the Board has taken up. Unless you are on 2nd Ave, there should be no issues. We all lve in some of the highest points in Bklyn!

We use Liberty Mutual. I have a frame house in GWH.
  • that was what my grilfriend told the insurance company, I think it was state fram. she does not live on 2nd ave and she has a frame house.

Insurance companies are trying to get away with what ever they can.
  • State Farm is THE WORST and there was a huge case against them in Albany with a pay to play scenario..."we'll drop your home owner's insurance UNLESS you have your car insurance with us..."
