The Storm That We Are Having Right Now

I imagine a lot of you are somewhere nearby during this storm. I know you're online since I'm getting all these topic reply notifications.

I just wrote this for my blog and thought I would share it. I guess I'm starved for attention tonight. :)

I’m sitting on the couch in my apartment with all the lights off, everything off except the overhead fan which is imperceptible. The storm is directly overhead and the thunder is so loud that a second ago when I looked out my window I saw my neighbor, wearing a pink halter, jump at the peal. The dog is so stressed out by this entire turn of events that she can’t sit still, and despite my attempts to coax her into sitting next to me is on her way to the tub which she thinks is the safest place in the apartment. I heard her nails clicking on the porcelain a minute ago.

I love the sound of a good storm.

I remember being much younger visiting North Carolina, after returning from a night of roller skating, no doubt with hillbillies and inbred stepsisters, there was the kind of storm you cannot have in New York City, the kind of storm you can only have where there is so much more sky. I still think this was the biggest thunderstorm I have ever witnessed; it seemed that way at the time.

The storm sounds like it’s moved off a bit, but judging by the sky which is constantly lit up with lightning, you wouldn’t think so, but you can tell by the thunder, that the worst has passed for the time being. The thunder is like a low roll, punctuated by enormous cracks, but the cracks are duller, are more distant, not as immediate, as they were when Kinka was considering a future in a tub that only she can sit in.

I would give anything for a porch right now, a way to be closer to this storm, but well that’s New York City for you. Still there is So Much Sound right now. . It sounds like the storm is coming back but if you count the seconds between lightning and thunder, there are too many for it to be that close, there’s no conjunction now. The rain just shifted somewhat, so instead of just the steady drizzle, there is now the patter against the air conditioner and the sounds of the storm are fading. The human noises in the background are picking up, people shrieking, car alarms. The worst of it has definitely passed. Someone should let the dogs know.

  • iz droping bricks over this thing :(. me is afraid right now.
  • I love a good storm. I'm on the fourth floor, and for a while I sat on the floor, lights out, looking out at the sky and breathing in the rain-ozone-dirt smell. My cats are old enough now not to get freaked out by storms, they were just a bit curious about me sitting in an unusual spot and cuddled around me...
  • The setting:
Windsor Terrace, 2nd fl. brownstone floor-thru (don't be hatin', because my landlord is an ASSHAT....did I mention that?).

    The players:

One 11 month old cat alternating between being hiding under the bed and strutting around like the Drama Queen that she is.

One almost-five year old cat hiding in the storage close (aka the "don't open that fucking door" room as noted during apartment tours)

One flexible woman with 2nd (ok, 3rd, but who the hell told me anybody was actually going to KEEP COUNT?!) ) glass of wine in hand.

The mehod of communication: Palm Pilot T/X with wireless acess. I lurve me this fucking thing. It's light-years ahead of my first Palm VII with email access. Sadly, Dope Wars still isn't in color. On the plus side, I have earned about $10 Billion (that's Billion, with a "B", thankyouverymuch) by buying and selling drugs throughout the boros (which some asshat seems to think includes "Central Park", but I digress).

I forgot where I was going with this.

    Ah, well.
  • My dog is a nervous wreck. There are huge puddles of drool all over my floors.
  • Poor baby!

Cats are generally much cooler with storms.
  • Kinka has settled down and is having a good chew. Flexichick has inspired me to open a cheap ass bottle of red.
  • steve, you need to bottle those feelings, seriously, you live in park slope, go make some money and contribute to the decline of the world instead, like every other good, hypocritical park sloper.

Now I've got that execrable Billy Joel song in my head. :(

  • Steve -

Ya know what goes suprisingly well with 3 glasses of red wine?

    No?

A toasted Thomas' Multi-Grain english muffin with chunky peanutbutter and a shmear of Trader Joe's cherry preserves (the type that has cherry chunks in it. I brought it here from TJs in PA a few weeks ago).

Consider the above a semi-public service announcement

One of my favorite snacks used to be Ak-Mak crackers with chunky peanut butter and strawberry-amaretto preserves. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find those preserves in years ... I keep meaning to make my own, but, I'm pathetic that way.

I'm almost certain nothing in that post detracted from my ongoing attempt to make money off the decline of the world. I'll have to check with my pastor tomorrow.

Someone needs to have a trader joes party so I can sample all that stuff, but it's safe to say I have more pedestrian tastes. I ended up opening a rolling rock and I would kill for some pretzels.
  • my cats were home alone. I left the hair salon (hotttt new hair-do!) in soho and saw, glancing up from under my umbrella, zap! zap! zappity!! zap! on the chrysler building!! yikes! I rushed into the B/D subway stop and then went to Beast for dinner (and MMMMM prosecco). the rain was a gentle drizzle when I left Beast and went to Indigo to confirm on my bday party, and wandered over to Sepia for some post-dinner drinks with a PHer. twas a lovely evening, despite rain and crazy lightning!
  • Steve -

TJs does pedestrian quite well, too.

I have a car and usually make a big TJs haul at my mom's house in PA 4x a year or so.

Still haven't been to the one in Union Sq.

    Is that thing open yet?

    yes. jeez. pay attention.
  • Since St. Patrick's Day.

I'm thinking it's really crowded, so I haven't gone (NYT had pictures of people lining up around the block....screw that!).

Anybody know if the liquor part is open? The manager at the PA store told me they're doing a wholesale liquor store next door where they will sell the (in)famous Two Buck Chuck.
  • my dog was panting and nervous all night long
    wouldn't leave my side

not sure what it is about thunderstorms that spooks dogs like that
they can sense something we can't. weird....
  • Well its happening again, this time however its just the 40 days and nights rain. No thunder or lightning (at least not yet). This storm also had the coolest cloud I've ever seen. It was straight out of central casting, very grey, black and green and ominous.

They are filming Spiderman 3 right in the back of my office building and I just went down to go to the bank and thought it was sunny out because they have all the fake lights on - when I came out of the bank they must have shut down production because it was soo dark
