Google "Westboro Baptist Church" and be apalled...The link is too offensive to post here.

already being discussed on Park Slope thread. ...might be no need to discuss here as well.

Subject: Bringing hate to Prospect Heights
I am so sad that Westboro Baptist is bringing their hate to Prospect Heights and Union Temple.
Our neighbors at Union Temple are in my prayers. I'm sorry their are picketing during the holy days. -
The letter from the rabbi over on the Park Slope board is great -- very inspiring. It does seem like the best response may be no response.

some reports from their little demo at Brooklyn Tech:

Wait...I'm confused. Unless Westboro has two groups of yahoos in the city this Saturday, they've created a scheduling conflict for themselves by being here from 10 to 10:30am, but also being at Congregation Beth Elohim from 9:45 to 10:15am. Whoops! I guess they were too busy hating to double check the calendar!
BTW, I absolutely love how they schedule their protests in half-hour increments--now that is one efficient bunch of bigots! -
they want to be greeted by masses of excited upset people....
it's not like they have to be on time, people hate them regardless.
...neighbors: please stay home. -
Westboro only wants a rise, but they can't seem to get it up.
I got an email that we should NOT protest the Westboro people at the Kane Street Synagogue. Here's what DailyGotham.com has to say about how pathetic one their their protests was:mole333 wrote: These folks arrived today and their first day of protests was, to put it mildly, unimpressive. They seem to be rather impotent when it comes to being Dickheads.

Five people. And they will teach Brooklyn what good looks like? Sounds more like they are teaching Brooklyn what LAME looks like. What CHUMPS! That is the best they can do? Five people telling some of the smartest kids in NYC that God is their enemy. Big f***ing deal.Rabbi Sam Weintraub wrote: SUBJECT: URGENT: PLEASE DO NOT COUNTER PROTEST AT THE KANE STREET SYNAGOGUE THIS SATURDAY
Dear friends,
By now many of you are aware of the planned protest of a tiny, fringe hate group outside the Kane Street Synagogue this Shabbat, Saturday, September 26 at 12:30 P.M. The "Westboro Baptist Church" (no affiliation to any mainstream Baptist or any other Christian Church) is a group from Topeka, Kansas, who share despicable anti-Gay, anti-Jewish and other messages at Synagogues, churches and other points of public assembly.
We at the Kane Street Synagogue are deeply moved by the many expressions of support which we have received from community members of all faiths and backgrounds. Your messages have been further confirmations of the blessings we enjoy every week, of living in this rich, diverse, multicultural, and tolerant community.
The Westboro group is based in Topeka, Kansas, and is tiny. A good part of the "Church" are children or grandchildren of one man, Fred Phelps, and at times they manage to gather only two or three people at their "rallies".? We have spoken with the Anti-Defamation League, the local police and other groups which monitor the Westboro group, and unanimously they give us one message:
THE ONLY WAY THAT WESTBORO GETS THEIR MESSAGE ACROSS IS BY PROVOKING COUNTER-PROTESTS AND SO GARNERING MEDIA ATTENTION. SO, WITH GRATITUDE FOR YOUR GOOD WILL AND CARING, WE ARE ALSO IMPLORING ALL OF YOU TO REFRAIN FROM COUNTER PROTESTS OR ENGAGING THE WESTBORO GROUP OR EVEN COMING BY TO SEE THE "ACTION".? This will only build up the "story" and get Westboro and their venomous message media and other popular attention which they do not deserve. We have made the same appeal to our own members.
We thank you for your understanding and support and on these sacred days wish you a Shana Tova, a Year of health, peace and understanding,
Rabbi Sam Weintraub

Fyi - westboro stood Prospect Heights up. There were a number of counter-protesters at Union Temple who waited for them for over an hour, but they never made it - they spent longer in Park Slope than they were supposed to so I guess they were crunched for time.. even haters have to keep to their schedules I suppose.
Eventually some of us walked over to Kane Street to be present there. I respected the Rabbi's request not to counter-protest and didn't say or do anything while I stood there.. I know it would have been better just to ignore them but I really felt compelled to see them in person. After spending so many years watching their insanity play out on the internet it was just something I had to do. I'm glad I did - they were unbelievably pathetic seeming and each had to hold multiple signs because there were so few of them (maybe 4 or 5 adults?). They were laughing and chanting and singing a version of "Tradition" with the lyrics changed to hateful messages. They are really performers more than anything else and the whole thing seemed like an immersive performance art experiment. At the end one made a big show of pretending to sneeze and wipe her nose on an Israeli flag (also had the Gay flag) and one of the little kids said Thank You to the group and they made a bee-line for their Kia minivan with Jersey plates. And not for nothing, but the women of Westboro looked like they were getting out of there to make it to Ginger's for happy hour if you know what I'm saying.
All in all, I met more neighborhood people today than I have in months. This group has managed to be so polarizing (with them on one side and everyone else on the other) that pretty much everyone can agree on their opinion of them. They provided a platform for us to get together on a beautiful fall day and get to know each other in the spirit of love, diversity and shared values. I kind of feel lucky to have been there. I also feel like I've seen the man behind the curtain and never have to get riled up about such a pathetic bunch of losers again. -
I like your post, jarvis, and I felt the same way. It was kind of nice to gather on the temple steps and visit with neighbors. it felt communal, and with only five of them there (plus 2 kids) they looked LAME.
Howdy, Stranger!
