chinese massage place got robbed in broad daylight today

as i walked south on vanderbilt at around 10:35am, dropped off my dry cleaning at happy cleaner and then heard a chinese woman running by, shrieking, from the massage place a few doors down.

as it turns out, some guy followed her into the store after she just opened up. she put her handbag behind the table, said suspect reached behind, stole her pocketbook and ran around the corner on park place, i believe, headed east.

apparently had the wages for all the workers for the month.

an hour later, 5-0 was parked outside, but both guys were in their patrol car, doing nothing but acting as a decoy.

  • Perhaps they were taking a Police report while awaiting the arrival of the Evidence Collection Team to dust for fingerprints. Just a thought
  • ^^^^ great answer KWAC
spoken like the true YOU !

and just because i would like to know..

how do you know it was the "WAGES for a WHOLE month" ?
  • spoke to a pretty good source.
  • That's terrible. I feel a little sorry for that place. They seem to be trying very hard, but in all the wrong ways. When people go for a massage - at least young professional types - they are looking for a zen-like, cool atmosphere. Shanghai's computer printouts in the store front, half-ass drawing on the wall, massage therapists standing out front smoking cigarettes dressed in medical scrubs, and ugly "gift card" banner under the awning, just ain't cutting it for this neighborhood. They should take some aesthetic cues from Milk Bar across the street, which seems to be thriving.

The perp did indeed get the months payroll. The victim reports giving the perp $10!!!!!!!!!!

    Sometimes I crack myself up.
  • Mac1: completely agree. that store is a bit out of place with the 2009 vanderbilt avenue. maybe the 2000 vanderbilt ave it may have gotten some business.

i'm shocked that they're able to make rent, considering places like red lipstick are moving out of vanderbilt because they can't make rent.
  • And they close really early on weeknights. Not good for the "after work massage" crowd.
  • That's a shame. I haven't been yet but if its just a cheap quick "tui-na" or whatever the hell no-frills Chinese massage joint, with a bunch of tables separated by curtains - that's all I need.

There are places that offer zen-like, scented candle, touchy-feely crap - go there if you want - why must everything be the same? Why must everything be expensive? Can't I just pay $45 bucks for a no-frills hour instead of $150 - my eyes are closed and I'm dozing off pretty much the entire time anyway, so why pay for "ambiance"?

These places are perfect wham-bam, no conversation, fix my aching back, rub my feet quickie places for the working "stiff".

If I want luxury I go to the Peninsula in midtown.
  • I'm just saying it's a bad business model for this neighborhood. Clearly the place is floundering.
  • do we know if it's really floundering? can't be that bad if someone robbed them for their wages...
  • That's no happy ending.
  • They robbed my testicles a few weeks back.
  • Since this is my work-from-home day, I went over and tried this place out. We are impecunious at the moment, so I just did the 10-minute chair massage. I thought it was good, and definitely cheaper than the place I sometimes go near my office.

With this style of massage, I usually find the massage itself not particularly relaxing but afterwards my back feels "untangled." This is not the kind of place that you get someone a gift certificate to as a shower gift or anything--it's a place you'd take yourself on a semiregular basis because your back is messed up from, say, working on a computer so much.
