Is there a little India — Brooklynian

Is there a little India

Where one can buy obscure spices and such?

Comments

  • jackson heights in queens and various stores in manhattan, but i'd try sahadi's (on atlantic near court) first. they're lebanese but have a formidable spice collection. there are things i haven't been able to find there (pomegranate seeds, for instance), but not many.
  • There's an Indian grocery store on 4th Ave at about 52nd Street in Sunset Park that is pretty well stocked for Indian supplies and spices.
  • http://www.kalustyans.com/ @ Lex & 28th, and the surrounding area. Kalustyan's is fantastic.
  • I want to say the Turkish grocery around 60th Street and 8th Ave in Sunset Park. But I'm just not sure.
  • I second Kalustyan's, it's the most convenient to get to by public transportation. If you have a car and don't mind driving, then head to Jackson heights, it's a lot more reasonably priced.
  • Little India is off Mcdonald Ave and Dahill Ave. Make a right off Mcdonald and you will see all the Indian stores on one block practically and supermarkets with everything under the sun.
  • All great responses; although I will be checking out McDonald Avenue and Dahill Avenue this weekend, with my man-bag.
  • Just to elaborate....I stumbled upon this area myself while on the way back from Shoprite and looking for Basmati rice. If it isnt Dahill,I am pretty sure, then it will be Church Ave but you will see the stores off Mcdonald as most of them have elderly Indian men standing outside of them aside from the signage. You can also ask but I dont think you will need to do that.I got 10 lbs of basmatic rice for 10 dollars, a real steal and some good curry.Good luck.
  • 10 dollars for 10ibs is a good deal. Though I remember a time when you could buy 10 lbs for 5 bones.

    Thanks Arlette
