park slope new york sports club rocks!

just wanted to give a rave for the park slope nysc...

the place is just run really well, is kept super clean and the staff are incredibly nice.
i had to say it, because a lot of the other ny sports clubs are total dives, and this one is not. the place has a good vibe, the music isn't too loud, it's never overly crowded and it's not cruisy either like some other gyms.

i always enjoy working out there, and just wanted to let everyone know that i heartily recommend this place if you live nearby.

  • If you think it's so nice...you should check out the NYSC on Irving street near Union Square. They have 12 different music video channels all with different genres to do cardio with. A far cry from Park Slope's one channel of crap.

I guess that's my only gripe about the place but it could go for all the NYSC I go to. At last their TV's work and CNN isn't just a frozen picture like the one on 34th was for more than a month.
  • Wow, the other NYSCs must be god awful then. I belong to the one at Park Slope and I can't stand it. The people who work there are nice, but can't do anything. Ask them to change a channel on the TV and they don't have the knowhow.

Also, they keep it way too hot in there and can't change that either. I suspect people don't complain because they think they're getting a good workout because they are sweating profusely. This is not healthy. Also, they cram the equipment in there and it's hard to get around. Oh, and for the past 6 months the place has smelled like doob. Does anybody know why that is? I love my doob, but not in the gym.

YES! I noticed that too -- but not exactly like it... I wonder if it's just particular kind of mildew or something? It's totally weird.
  • I was thinkinging of joining.

    Thanks for the information.

    I am re-considering!!
  • The only reason I joined is that one is close to my office in Manhattan that I can use during the week and use the PS one on weekends.

Frankly, if you're staying in the Slope I'd do Harbor Fitness. It's cheaper and Brooklyn based.

Another gripe...the people may be nice but some of them are fucking loud. I don't want to hear your stupid conversations while I'm working out (even through my headphones)!
  • No, I'm sure it's not weed, because it smells like it would be really good skunk. Not sure who would be smoking it there, let alone the expensive stuff every single day. It just doesn't seem feasible. It's probably some chemical.

I still go there though because it's the close. I used to go to the Y, but didn't like that much either. Maybe I'll give it another try though.
  • You're joking...I've been a member since they opened because they're close to my house...but clean...OMG - hell no!
They "re-did" the locker rooms recently....and after laying down new carpet, turns out they never did fix the leak on the floor - so it's wet again.
If they could get rid of the general manager they have now the place might improve, but as long as he's there it'll keep going downhill. What keeps me going there are the old-time trainers....but I see less and less of them...there's always new less experienced trainers coming and then suddenlty they're gone...

I go to the Y. It's okay, but unfortunately I'm usually there during peak stroller time and, well, just gah.

Like you mentioned about the other place, the machines seem really packed in--I feel like I'm in an obstacle course sometimes. I don't think they really have any free floor space for stretching or step exercises (for this, I miss Crunch on Flatbush). That being said, the place is pretty clean, has a lot of cardio machines that they seem to keep in good working order, and nobody hassles you about buying personal training sessions. Plus it's the closest place to home for me which is key when it gets below 40.
  • I've been a member of the NYSC chain for 6 years now, and the Park Slope location is by far the cleanest I've been to... but that's not a compliment. It's better than other locations, that's about it.
I agree with every comment made above. And let's not start with the showers (or lack thereof) or the steam room...
  • Ma favorite is the fat employees who work there...c'mon you work at a FITNESS club for fuck's sake.
  • I know who you are referring to when you say the "fat" employees - the person in question is a master trainer who had bad knees and recently had a knee replacement (the bad knees caused her not to be able to do a lot of things)- she is an awesome trainer and a great spin instructor.
Funny - the one thing I have liked about NYSC in PS is that it is not a skinny girl/muscle man gym but they have people of all ages and sizes - including the trainers.
  • Still that's not a good sign. I also know how to use the equipment and how to eat better, and yet I don't do it. So why would I pay someone to motivate me if he/she can't even do it either?
  • Actually she is fit (you can be fat and fit) - her form is perfect - she's not a twenty-something and is so much better than the young trainers they've been hiring - and whoever is hiring the trainers is doing a terrible job either in choosing them or mentoring them - they don't last and I wouldn't train with any of them.
To be honest, I thought the same thing as you guys when they first hired her and after seeing her in action I changed my mind really quickly.
  • I know who you're talking about Peanuts but I wasn't referring to any of the trainers...I was thinking more of the general employees.

Fit and fat is fine but it doesn't inspire confidence when you're sweating so hard you might puke.

The trainers there are bad. My wife had a great one who she worked with for a year (got in great shape) then she left. She tried two other ones but they both also left suddenly. The male trainers seem to be better but a lot of women don't want to be trained by dudes.
  • Actually, there are 4 trainers there that I think are really good...Chris, Christian, Joan & Ziggy (not sure if Antoine is still there).

I bet your wife worked with Rachel or Angela- they were awesome

NYSC is not a great place to work which is why you see trainers come and go....and as I said before, their general manager is really bad and the place is managed very poorly.

And tell your wife I've trained with both men & women and found I didn't have a preference (thought I did but once I did the training I found I only needed someone who would inspire and push me)
  • Oops, I meant Izzie (not Ziggy :-) )
  • l looked at nysc when it opened but decided to stay at harbor which i love
  • Subject: That Doob Smell

For those who smelled it, yes there are some of us who have worked out with a far too smelly skunk supply in our pockets. I have only caught one dirty look.. Who says you can't smoke before working out?
  • Well that is one of the skankiest revivals of an old thread that I have ever seen here.

And if the Newbie speaks truth.. who cares anyway!
  • Blech--I hate the Park Slope NYSC! Dirty, hot, airless with some of the rudest staff ever. Quit after several years of putting up with their nonsesnse. The Y across the street is a much better option IMHO.
  • I have to update a previous post where I said the new young trainers are not very good. There has been a big improvement - a few really good ones have come on board.
Now if they would only get rid of the manager and assistant manager there - every year they get a wish list for equipment and he got an informercial ab machine (a little better made but still not very effective) and another ridiculous ab machine that takes up a ridiculous amount of room. You'd think he would have met with the actual trainers to see what equipment to get but that might mean he'd have to admit he knows nothing about the fitness industry.
  • ..just joined

    ..who's bringing the pot?

I just joined NYSC and started training with Kevin and I love it! I have had trainers in the past but, no one has taught me so much in such a short period of time! The sessions are so well structured, he's great with instruction. If you're looking for a great trainer with a great attitude and all the know-how, ask for him!
  • Subject: Re: NYSC Park Slope

    Isabella,

Is this the same trainer Kevin you posted about twice when you first registered here in 2007?

    Or someone else?

    Just curious.
  • isbell = kevin federline? lol.. :twilight zone:
  • Subject: Park Slope NYSC

Yes it is. I followed him to the NYSC so had to join the gym.
